There is no better tagline for Ekka 2018 than "back to the future" with this year not only dropping entry price but adding more modern entertainment, while doubling down on the show's traditional roots.

The Ekka started as humble agricultural show in 1876 and hasn't shied away from its past. The animals are an ever-popular aspect of the show. There is quite literally nowhere else in Brisbane where you can see 10,000 animals at once. As you may well be aware, RNA’s Brisbane Showground have been undergoing a regeneration project which includes the CRT Pavilion - a new home for large and small breeds during the show.

This year, the ground and first floor will be home to beef and dairy cattle, poultry and dairy goats during the 10 days in August– adding an extra two football fields of space where you can see animals at the show.

“It is the only building of its kind in the world and has been specially designed to house animals during Ekka and act as an events space and car park facility outside of show – with all revenue invested back into the Ekka,” said RNA Chief Executive Brendan Christou said of the new facility.

There's also a new Woodchop Arena, located at the Bowen Bridge Road end of Sideshow Alley, highlighting the popular and traditional attraction by increasing its footprint 50% in the all-weather indoor space.

Also new to this year's Ekka are a bunch

of competitions, including the Dagwood Dog Eating Competition. Australia's No.1 Ranked Pro Competitive Eater and social media star ‘Hulk Smash Food’ (Cal Stubbs) will take on the challenge. Fancy yourself as a cracking Karaoker? There’s i-Sing Karaoke where performers will compete karaoke style in the Queensland state and national finals of the i-Sing Australia competition. Or, if you're more the footloose kind, a boot-scooting Line Dancing Hoedown featuring social dancing, competition demonstrations, beginner workshops and the inaugural Queensland Club Challenge.

The hilarious Heritage Bank Racing Pigs return. Last seen at Ekka in 2015, the popular little piggies will fly through the sky, dive into a pool of water and race each other around a track.

Ekka Fashion returns, this year to a whimsically themed wonderland theme called Enchanted Winter. 70% of the designers are new and 26 women’s and menswear designers showcasing the natural materials of cotton, wool, silk and leather will strut their wares in 40 shows over the 10 days.

There's a brand new technology hub located in the Technology Precinct on the upper floor of the Royal International Convention Centre. The hub will showcase the latest in virtual reality technology where Ekka visitors can walk in the footsteps of Aboriginal people from the 1770s or throw VR snowballs at each other. You'll also be able to fly micro-drones around an obstacle

course in a netted area. Australia’s first 5G Connected Car will be there alongside coding activities for kids

One of the greatest modern additions to the show - Ekka Nights - returns with more new excitement than you can fire 2.5 tonnes of fireworks at. Running 6-8pm every night, Ekka Nights kicks off with the national anthem will super star Adam Brand, and then a special fireworks for the littlies at 6.05pm. After that, the night continues ablaze with the motor mayhem of Bronco vs Cowboy Lowd V8 UTE precision driving and race, monster trucks, daring FMX riders, and a wild colonial wagon chase.

The night finishes with a spectacular fireworks and light display. This year's nightly finale will feature an Ekka record breaking 150 firing points in a 360 design. There will be a giant space shuttle blasting off and pyrotechnics shooting out of remote controlled cars as they circle the Main Arena at more than 100kph. If that’s not enough, Ekka Nights will also feature a car powered by a jet engine shooting 30ft flames! Ekka Nights is actually incredible value if you take advantage of the Twilight Pass costing just $20 for entry after 6pm.

Showbags are a big part of the fun and now parents can take the hassle out of the showbag pavilion by browsing this year's offerings online. This year there are 300 showbags to choose from (including the must-have classic Bertie Beetle bag at $2). The Triple M Showbag Pavilion at the Bowen Park end near Sideshow Alley is where you'll find all

your favourites.

The Ekka can be as economical or pricey as you like it to be, depending on which direction you point your family. Beside the family ticket price drop, there are even more discounts available for those with RACQ memberships and those good at sniffing out a bargain. RACQ as the major sponsor offers its members a 15% discount every day when you buy your pass online or at your closest RACQ branch. You should also keep an eye the Ekka's social media accounts for special discount offerings while signing up for mailouts via 'My Ekka' also lands discounts conveniently to your inbox.

With animals, daily competitions, music, technology, rides, showbags, food, beverages, cooking schools, fashion. plus both day and night activities including 140 free things to do & see, plus a 10% price drop for families, Ekka 2018 is going to be huge.

For those in the Brisbane city council area residents, the official Ekka public holiday (also known as People's Day), is famously on Wednesday 15 August 2018, but for those of us in the Moreton Bay region Monday, August 13 is our public holiday. Council advises that despite the public holiday kerbside waste collections will continue as normal, however council’s customer service centres and libraries will be closed.

Established in 2007, North Lakes Counselling Services has a long history of helping couples and individuals manage their relationships and attain their personal goals.

Hi Leonie,

Would love you to answer my email in the Messenger. i have been with my partner for four years and we are both in our forties. He is lovely, and i adore him but there are issues that no matter how hard i try, i can’t come to terms with.

He embarrasses me to the point that i feel that there is a compatibility issue that i may not be able to keep coping with.

the first issue is when he is around his family, he turns into an idiot. We rarely see our families and his behaviour is pretty much great when we are on our own but when he gets around his family and friends he turns into a kind of jack ass clown.

the second issue is that the guy is colour blind and it shows. Green checked shirt with plaid orange jeans was this weekend’s get up. i have tried to suggest options for him, but he says he is a fully-grown man and He will dress himself. Whatever the colours are that he sees out of those eyes of his looks just fine to him and it just isn’t.

i feel that his ridiculous dress sense and often insensitive behaviour is a reflection on me. i feel like people wonder what i am doing with someone like him and it does affect me. i have stopped taking him to work events and out to places i feel that he won’t fit in.

i feel like i must choose between my own dignity and him. He has made it clear that he won’t change and i don’t think that i can be

okay with it. Can we really have a future with this playing in our lives. i feel like my staying is giving him permission to keep acting this way. i’m feeling a bit lost and wonder if you could offer something by way of advice.

Frustrated /Mango Hill

Hi frustrated,

this is a common issue and you are not the first to write in with similar experiences. the first thing that i would like to explore with you is that your partner has every right to dress and interact with his family and friends however he chooses so long as they feel okay with it. Remember that if you leave the relationship this man will continue to be himself regardless of whether you are on the scene or not. so, whether you give your permission or not, it won’t change his reality, only yours. at forty it is possible to change but this rarely happens unless there is a good reason to. in my view, your girlfriend requesting a change to suit her perception of what you should be and how you should behave is not a good enough reason. Give and take is required by both partners in a relationship and we should entertain reasonable adjustment of behaviours that are distressing our partners, but we should never (setting aside cruel and criminal behaviours) entertain changing our personalities, our values and who we are as people.

as to whether you have a future: it speaks volumes about your level of commitment to your partner if you let the perceived

opinions of other people affect how you feel about him. i feel that what we should really explore is your sense of self-esteem and self-worth. Would you really put your self-image above your relationship when the worst thing the man does is have fun with his family and friends and is a poor dresser? there are times when the behaviour of our partner should absolutely dictate that a relationship should end. these include abuse, duplicitous behaviour, infidelity, unaddressed substance abuse and many other destructive behaviours.

Wearing clashing tops and bottoms should not even be on the radar when assessing the health of a relationship, but our partner trying to control or change us should be.

i am not trying to criticise you, but i am trying to get you to see the relationship and what it really means to you more clearly. Compatibility is very important and love alone is not enough to sustain a relationship over time.

the other thing i feel that you need to consider is that your partner will eventually work out that you are embarrassed by him, if he hasn’t already, and he make take the decision of whether to stay in the relationship or not out of your hands by leaving you. i would like you to take the time to truly evaluate this relationship based on both his and your needs and make a decision from there.

Til next week, Leonie

The Roar from the den of North Lakes Lions

Greetings from “tHe HaPPiest Lions CLUB in aUstRaLia”.this edition of the roar, i’ll bring

you up to speed with relevant details of the going’s on in our club since last time.

WINTER

although winter is with us in north Lakes and even we do have the typical warm days, there has been a noticeable drop in temperature in our area. this has not been noticed in the Lions Den, however, as we’re still buzzing about regardless of the weather outside.

WALK FOR AN AUSSIE KID

this project has now gone into our annals, as one of the most successful and well-run

projects we as a club (in our ten years) have taken on. Lion tim Burgess and his team, truly went above and beyond and were able to present a cheque in excess of $6,000.00 to the cause. Congratulations tim and thank you for being able to yet again, display your leadership skills, not only to the benefit of our club, but certainly to many others.

ASSISTANCE SMART PUPS PROjECT

our club has recently taken on a project to help provide and assist with sponsorship, for a young mother in our area to acquire an assistance smart pup for her autistic son. We had a representative from assistance smart

Pups guest speak at one of our meeting some time ago and our members were very impressed. once all the paperwork is finalized, i’ll write an article on the lifechanging difference one of these smart pups can make to someone who need one.

CHILDREN OF COURAGE 2018: a quick reminder that we will be staging our Children of Courage 2018 awards at the Lakes College Hall, 2 College st north Lakes on saturday morning, the 11th of august. i’ll publish times etc. in the next article.

CHANGEOVER

Last week our club donned the formal attire and celebrated the terrific job our 2017-18 Board achieved and welcomed in our 2018-19 Board. it was a wonderful night, with dignitaries, speeches, wine and merriment a plenty. We have a very strong Board again this year, which is headed by Lion John Paul. Congratulations President John, we look forward to another positive year with you at the helm.

BECOME A MEMBER

Don’t forget, you can become a member of the north Lakes Lions Club. Call our Membership officer Lion sean Hughes directly, on 0427 477 990. He’ll answer any initial questions and invite you to our next Dinner meeting. Come and join our club and experience first hand how your individual skills can be utilized. if you’re new to the area, you can integrate and make new friends in our community and as a member, watch north Lakes grow.

till next time, Lion Chris.

the Brisbane Boat show returns to the Brisbane Convention and exhibition Centre

(BCeC) from the 24th until the 26th of august 2018. the show will fill more than 20,000 square metres of floor space with fodder for recreational water fun lovers. With a history spanning over 50 years, the three-day celebration of recreation is sure to please both committed boaties as well as those new to the lifestyle.

Popular with locals, the Brisbane Boat show is where industry comes together to display and offer the best in recreational boating. the boats are the show’s heroes, but all the boating gear you might need or just want plays a big part too.

andrew fielding, Chairman with the Queensland Council of the Boating industry association Ltd who organise the event, said given australia’s recreational boating manufacturing powerhouse lies at Brisbane’s doorstep, visitors can be assured of seeing the best and latest designs at this show. “Boat manufacturing plays a big part of the Queensland economy and this event showcases the quality and innovation that australia has to offer,” he said.

over 60 organisations have booked exhibition space, and they will bring with them more than 500 vessels which will present an excellent

array of boats catering to various interests. they include fishing, water skiing, wake boarding, personal water craft, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boards as well as others. once again, family cruisers are proving as popular as ever at the show.

While the show is the best place to see boats and the best place to buy boats, the Bia also aims to entertain and educate at the show. With a commitment to safe boating, show

organisers have pulled together an excellent line up of government agencies to ensure visitors have the opportunity to better understand how to stay safe and maximise their time on the water. on stage will be a mix of educators and entertainers, the fishing masterclasses make a welcome return.

This morning we welcomed Mike and Desre from Blue Flame Social Media at north Lakes. They gave us a very interesting presentation on the social media medium as a whole, what's out there, what's popular with who and issues regarding privacy. They were peppered with questions from their very interested audience and have kindly agreed to return to a future meeting with a helpdesk.

This followed with a brief discussion about what members regarded as the pros and cons of social media. At the conclusion of 'all things social media' we adjourned for morning tea and a chat.

After morning tea there were some announcements about our upcoming activities, some jokes and stories. And before we knew it, it was time to say farewell for another week.

Tuesday 24th July – Christmas in July at Fox & hounds Country Inn, Mt Tamborine. Members only.

Tuesday 31st July – A morning of Trivia. Visitors welcome.

Tuesday 7th August - General Meeting. Visitors welcome.

our meetings are open to all women in north Lakes/Mango hill-Moreton Bay District. For more information please contact Trish 0447 071 221 or Sue 0418 785 944.

ReaL estateAustralia's leading consumer advocacy authority releases blueprint to reduce consumer power bills by a quarterthe aCCC’s recommendations to significantly improve electricity affordability for australian consumers and businesses are outlined after a comprehensive enquiry into the industry.

the inquiry, which commenced in March 2017, began by identifying the root causes of high electricity prices across the entire electricity supply chain, and has now made 56 recommendations detailing ways to fix the national electricity Market.

this was no toothless examination of the industry. During the inquiry as part of the inquiry the aCCC issued over 100 notices to retailers and generators forcing them to provide information about their revenue and usage, wholesale costs, network costs (transmission and distribution), environmental (green) scheme costs, and retail costs and margins. they received, examined and analysed 48,000 documents including input from representative groups, consumer groups and individuals and consulted experts to make their findings.

“the national electricity Market is largely broken and needs to be reset. Previous approaches to policy, regulatory design and competition in this sector over at least the past decade have resulted in a serious electricity affordability problem for consumers and businesses,” aCCC Chair Rod sims said.

“there are many reasons australia has the electricity affordability issues we are now facing. Wholesale and retail markets are too concentrated. Regulation and poorly designed policy have added significant costs to electricity bills. Retailers’ marketing of discounts are inconsistent and confusing to consumers and have left many consumers on excessively high ‘standing’ offers.”

the aCCC estimates its recommendations, if adopted, will save the average household between 20 and 25 per cent on their electricity bill, or around $290-$415 per annum.

“it is clear that most households are paying far too much for electricity. in addition, some of the most vulnerable in our community are forced to struggle through freezing winters and scorching summers, with many others also having difficulty paying their bills,” Mr sims said.

further, australia’s 2.2 million small to medium businesses could save an average of 24 per cent on their electricity bill, if the aCCC’s recommendations are adopted.

“Many small to medium businesses operate on very small margins, and cannot afford the increases to their costs that have occurred over past years,” Mr sims said.

Commercial and industrial customers, the heaviest users, could see electricity costs decrease on average by 26 per cent.

“Commercial and industrial customers, like mining and manufacturing companies, have watched what has been a relative competitive advantage to them, affordable electricity, now threatening their viability,” Mr sims said.

“While important steps have been taken recently, restoring electricity affordability will require wide ranging and comprehensive action. We believe our

changes can and will, if adopted, have a powerful and tangible impact on electricity affordability for all australians; this will reduce economic inequality and enhance our national welfare.”

“three further points need to be made. first, our recommendations require some difficult decisions as sound economic reform usually does. second, despite poor decisions over at least the past decade creating the current electricity affordability problem, it now falls to current Commonwealth and state governments to make the difficult decisions

to fix it. third, we must move away from narrowly focussed debates; addressing affordability requires change across a broad front,” Mr sims said.

the aCCC’s recommendations include:

•abolishing the current retail ‘standing’ offers (which are not the same between retailers), and replacing them with a new ‘default’ offer consistent across all retailers, set at a price determined by the australian energy Regulator (aeR).

•Requiring retailers to reference any discounts to the new ‘default’ offer pricing determined by the aeR, making it easier for consumers to genuinely compare offers. Conditional discounts, such as pay-on-time discounts, must not be included in any headline discount claim.

•a mandatory code for comparator websites be introduced so that offers are recommended based on customer benefit, not commissions paid.

•Voluntary write downs of network overinvestment, including by the nsW, Queensland and tasmanian governments (or equivalent rebates). this could save consumers in nsW, Queensland and tasmania at least $100 per year.

•Premium solar feed-in-tariff schemes should be funded by state governments and the small scale renewable energy scheme should be phased out, saving non-solar consumers $20-$90 per year.

•Government support to make bankable new investment by new players in generation capacity to help commercial and industrial customers and drive competition.

•Restructuring of Queensland generators into three separately owned portfolios to improve competition.

•Limiting companies with 20 per cent or more market share from acquiring more generation capacity.

•improving the transparency of over-the-counter contract trading by requiring reporting of these trades to a central registry.

•improving the aeR’s powers to investigate and address problems in the market and increasing penalties for serious wrongdoing.

“the aCCC’s affordability measures for consumers also include improvements to state and territory concession schemes, and funding for organisations to assist vulnerable consumers to choose a low-priced electricity offer that suits their circumstances,” Mr sims said.

“one of the most important recommendations is to move customers off excessively high ‘standing’ offers to a new standard ‘default’ offer to be independently set by the australian energy Regulator.”

Moving average residential customers who are still on the range of current ‘standing’ offers to the new ‘default’ offer could result in savings of $500 to $750 per annum (25-35 per cent). similarly, small and medium businesses could save $1450-$2250 (30-35 per cent) per year by moving to a standard ‘default’ offer. Currently over 20 per cent of small businesses are on high ‘standing’ offers.

“too many consumers and small business customers have given up trying to understand offers and switch in a confusing retail electricity market. Big changes are required to make it easier for consumers and businesses to understand market offers and improve competition,” Mr sims said.
