REACTIVITY OF METAL WITH WATER
EXPERIMENT 1:
REACTIVITY OF METAL WITH WATER
AIM: To study the reactivity of metals with water
MATERIAL: Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Zinc, Copper, wooden splinter, blue
litmus paper and red litmus paper.
APPARATUS: Glass trough, beaker, test tubes, filter funnel, retort stand with clamp and bunsen
burner
PROCEDURE
OBSERVATION:
ACTIVITYOBSERVATION
ASodium reacts ...................................... With water, with a hissing sound, and releases a ......................................... The ................................ Litmus paper turn .............................................
BCalsium react readily with water, releasing a ........................................; the splinter burns with a .................. The ............................ Litmus paper turns ............................
CMgnesium Magnesium does not react with .......................... but it react with ................................................. and releases a ........................................... The red litmus paper turn ........................
AluminiumAluminium does not react with .......................... but it react with ................................................. and releases a ........................................... The reaction is .......................... reactive compare to magnesium. The red litmus paper turn ........................
ZincZinc does not react with .......................... but it react with ................................................. and releases a ........................................... The reaction is .......................... reactive compare to aluminium. The red litmus paper turn ........................
CopperNo reaction is observed.
DISCUSSION:
Name the metals that can react with
water at room temperatur; ............................................................................................
Hot water; .....................................................................................................................
What is the use of the burning wooden splinter? ..........................................................................
Which metal does not react with water? ...............................................................................What are produced when a metal reacts with water? .....................................................................Arrange the metals used in the activities in the order of descending vigour of reaction with water.................................................................................................................................................
CONCLUSION:..........................................react most readily with water, followed by ........................................,
........................................., ..................................................., ........................................., and .............................. in the order of descending vigour of reaction.
EXPERIMENT 2
