Living in the Holy Spirit
Few expressions so succinctly summarize what is asked of us as
Christians as does the expression: “to live in the Spirit.” Too
often, however, this phrase is used in a way that is too pious,
too over-charged with charismatic fervor, or too theologically
abstract to have much meaning for ordinary people. It may well
summarize Christian life, but it can also be little more than a
very vague platitude. What does it mean “to live in the Spirit”?
St. Paul, in attempting to specify this, is anything but piously
deluded or theologically abstract. Rather he speaks with a
clarity that leaves almost no room for vagueness or false
sentiment. He begins by a certain Via Negativa, telling us that,
if in our lives there is “lewd conduct, impurity, licentiousness,
idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, bickering, jealousy, outbursts of
rage, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factionalism, envy,
drunkenness, orgies, and the like,” then we are not living in the
spirit, pure and simple. Conversely, we are living in the spirit
when, in our lives, there is “charity, joy, peace, patience,
endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and
chastity.” (Galatians 5)
This is a valuable insight because, if we take Paul's word's
seriously, we can never delude ourselves into identifying true
life in the Spirit with what it is so often confused with, namely,
false piety and over-privatized sentiment (in pious circles) and
confrontation out of hurt, paranoia, and narrow loyalties (in
both liberal and conservative circles). When the fruits of the
Spirit are absent, irrespective of how spiritually confident and
self-righteous we might feel or how right our cause might seem,
then the Spirit too is absent. We must be clear about this.

Pocas expresiones resumen simplificadamente lo que se nos
pide, como cristianos, al igual que la expresión: " Vivir en el
Espíritu." Con frecuencia, esta frase se utiliza de una manera
muy piadosa, llena de un fervor carismático, o con mucha
teología significativa para la gente común. Bien puede resumir
la vida cristiana, pero también puede ser algo incierto. ¿Qué
significa "vivir en el Espíritu?"
San Paul, en el intento de especificar esto, es cualquier cosa
menos piadosamente engañado o teológicamente abstracto. Más

fidelidad, mansedumbre, y dominio de si mismo. y
castidad." (Gálatas 5)
Esta es una información valiosa, si tomamos las palabra de
Pablo en serio, no podremos engañarnos a nosotros mismos en
reconocer la verdadera vida en el Espíritu con lo que tan
frecuentemente es confundida principalmente con la piedad,
confrontación en el dolor, paranoia y poca lealtad. Cuando los

The Spirit is present only when charity, joy, peace, patience,
endurance, kindness, generosity, faith, mildness, and chastity
are deeply in our lives—and permeate the air around us.
The Holy Spirit, as classically defined in theology, is “the love
between God and Christ, the Father and the Son.” It is in
meditating on this concept that we come to some
understanding of what it means to live in the Spirit. Let me try
to elaborate on this by using a image, that of romantic love in
its peak fervor.
Imagine a man and a woman who are deeply, passionately, and
completely in love. What will characterize their relationship?
Constant giving and receiving, resulting in an ever deeper
relationship and an ever intensifying gratitude—which will
leave them both, daily, feeling ever more mellow, joyful,
peaceful, mild, patient, chaste, and wanting to reach out and
share with others what is so quickening in their own lives.
Moreover, their love for each other will create, around them,
an ambience, a climate, an atmosphere, of charity, joy, peace,
patience, mildness, and chastity. The movement of giving-and-
receiving-in-gratitude between them will create a warm hearth
where others will spontaneously come to seek warmth in a
world which offers too little peace, patience, joy, and the like.
Such a relationship can be a modest indicator for what happens
in the Trinity, of how the Father and the Son generate the
Spirit, and what results from this generation.
•The Father constantly creates and gives life.
•The Son receives life from the Father and gives it
back in gratitude.
•This, then (as is true in all relationships wherein
gift is received lovingly), makes it possible for the
Father to give even more to the Son.
•As this flow of life, this giving and receiving,
goes on, gratitude intensifies and an energy, a
spirit, the Holy Spirit, is present.
•This Spirit, since it is generated by gratitude,
naturally is a Spirit of charity, joy, peace, patience,
goodness, long-suffering, mildness, faith, and
chastity. It is then too a spirit that is naturally
incompatible with idolatry, adultery, violence,
gossip, factionalism, jealousy, rage, and infidelity.
When we meditate on how the Holy Spirit is generated, we are
under less illusion as to what it means to live in the Spirit. To
believe that we are living in the Spirit when our lives are not
permeated by, and radiating, gratitude is to be dangerously
deluded. We must be clear about this, lest, as poet William
Stafford puts it: “Following the wrong God home, we may
both miss our star.”

la paciencia, la firmeza, la bondad, la generosidad, la fe, la
mansedumbre, y la castidad están profundamente en nuestras

El Espíritu Santo, como clásicamente se define en la teología, es

ambiente, un clima, una atmósfera, de caridad, gozo, paz,
paciencia, benignidad, y castidad. El movimiento de dar-y-recibir
-en-la gratitud entre ellos creará un hogar cálido donde otros
espontáneamente vendrán a buscar calor en un mundo que ofrece
poca paz, paciencia, alegría, y otras cosas semejantes.
Este tipo de relación puede ser un indicador modesto de lo que
sucede en la Trinidad, de cómo el Padre y el Hijo generan el
Espíritu, y lo que resulta de esta generación.
•El Padre crea y da vida constantemente.
•El Hijo recibe la vida del Padre y se la regresa en señal de
gratitud.
•Esto entonces (como ocurre en todas las relaciones en
donde el don se recibe con amor) lo hace posible para que el
Padre le dé aún más al Hijo.
•A medida que este flujo de la vida, este dar y recibir, que
pasa, la gratitud se intensifica y una energía, un espíritu, el
Espíritu Santo, se crea.
•Este Espíritu, ya que se genera por la gratitud,
naturalmente, es un Espíritu de caridad, gozo, paz,
paciencia, bondad, paciencia, benignidad, fe, y castidad. Es
entonces también un espíritu que es, naturalmente,
incompatible con la idolatría, el adulterio, la violencia, el
chisme, los celos, la rabia y la infidelidad.

Memorial Donations for the Altar Bread, Wine and Candles we
use at daily Mass and on the weekends are now being accepted,

Altar Flowers�
If you would like to remember a loved one by placing a floral
arrangement on the Altar, you may do so by signing up on the
flower calendar for the weekend of your choice. The calendar
is located in the gathering space of the church.
Arrangements are $75 and payable in the parish office at least 2
weeks prior to the requested weekend. We will not be able to
place your order without the advanced payment. The
arrangement will be ordered according to the liturgical color of
the requested weekend.
All these intentions will be listed in the bulletin the week
being offered. If would like to remember a deceased loved
one or honor someone in any of these special ways, please call

Annual Candlelight Vigil to pray for the end to abor tion in our
country. January 22 at 7 pm. Gather at the south entrance of the Old
Graham Courthouse, where there will be a short speech and then
silent prayer as we encircle the courthouse holding candles – which
will be provided.

and EMT’s can not get through. Moving forward the police will be issuing
tickets to cars parked in these places during Masses.

Nuevo en la despensa
Tuvimos nuestra primera distribución en la nueva ubicación
el lunes, 3 de diciembre de 2018 y nuestra primera
distribución de sábado el sábado, 15 de diciembre de 2018.
Sirviendo a 93 familias el lunes en 75 minutos y 147 familias
el sábado en 3 horas mantuvieron a todos en movimiento.

New at the Pantry
We held our first distribution from the new location on Monday,
December 3, 2018 and our first Saturday distribution on Saturday,
December 15, 2018. Serving 93 families on Monday in 75
minutes and 147 families on Saturday in 3 hours kept everyone
moving. Thanks to all who helped.

Stephen Ministry News
The Steven Ministry Support System is active here at Blessed
Sacrament church!
It is a trained, caring group of lay people who help people of all
races, cultures, and faiths get through the ups and downs of life. The
group consists of people who get trained, supervised, and mentored
in care giving efforts. These people are called Stephen Ministers.
The group also has Stephen Leaders who administer the program,
recruit and train potential ministers and serve as contact points for
people in need of loving, gentle, Christian care.
The group’s purpose is to provide support when people need it the
most.
The group is always interested in finding future ministers, and
always available to provide support for any individual in need of
comfort.
If you are looking for a valuable, life affirming experience or if you
know anyone in need of friendly, Christian-centered, loving support,
please contact any of our current Stephen Leaders.
