PCO~VQIII ..... ~ i cha rd Traubner Spanish operetta is technically older than any other European operetta form, taking its name from the Zarzuela Palace outside Madrid (the present home of Spain's King Juan Carlos). There. in the late 17th century, the first zanuelas were produced-lavish neoclassic musicales something like the English masques of the period.

Zonuela went through various transformations over succeeding decades, taking on attributes of other European musical-theater forms: Italian grand and comic opera, French opera-comique, operetta, even revue. By the mid-1850s, when Parisian operetta began with Offenbach, Madrid already had a Teatro de la Zarzuela (it still exists today) playing full-length, rather grand affairs that for the most part have disappeared from the repertoire. One composer, F.A. Barbieri, revolutionized the genre by incorporating Spanish dance and folk rhythms into a formula that had proved successsful for French composers like Offenbach and Lecocq, ushering in the great period of 19th century wnuela.

Two strands would develop: thegrande and chico zanuelas. The former, full-length works were often fairly serious, but not always; the chico (i.e., short work) was usually comic, but equally romantic or sentimental. By the 1880s. the chico works were gaining massive popularity all over

Madrid barrio to honor a certain saint. In this case, the honoree is La Paloma, or Our Lady of the Dove, and she is celebrated each August 15th in Madrid with rides, carnival booths, cotton candy, etc.--much like the St. Anthony's Street Fair in New York City's Little Italy.

La Verbena de la Polorna is widely regarded as perhaps the most perfect of all short wrzuelas. The music heard on this recording is exactly what was heard in 1894, with a very close English approximation to the original Spanish libretto. In addition, we have added a typical operetta finale to this work.

Inside the Cafe de Melilla in the center of the square, a gypsy singer, La Cantadora, sings of her life in Andalusia. The pulsating rhythms of the Soledod soon have everyone spilling out into the street dancing. Casta, Susana, and their ferocious Aunt Antonia watch from a balcony. Two local ladies, Severiana and Mariquita, enquire about Susana and her absent boy friend. As the evening wears on, a night watchman and two policement discuss current events. Don Hilarion invites Casta and Susana to join him at the cafe for some light refreshment and a little mozurka-ing; to his dismay, Antonia accompanies them, as an all too boisterous chaperone.

A brooding Julidn is encouraged by Rita to be a man and to confront his mysterious rival or to forget about him. He suddenly sees and recognizes Don Hilarion flirting with Susana. He is furious. Susana tauntingly fans Julidn's jealousy when he asks her where she is going in a gorgeous shawl from Manila which he did not buy for her. Finally, Julidn lunges at Hilarion, as Antonia enters the fray, threatening Julidn with her dog. The police intervene, ultimately making Antonia pay a fine for disturbing the peace. Julidn continues to menace Hilarion, who craves police protection. Antonia offers him her own protection, as the Madrileiios run off to enjoy the verbena. --R. T
