This is a book of images. More than three hundred aesthetically beau-
tiful political, social, or cultural posters, the majority of which are little
known, make up this compilation. It has been made with the same love
and passion we regularly devote to the care of these valuable and fragile
pieces. We dedicate it to all Cuban designers, wherever they may be; those
men and women who left us a wonderful body of visual art work, for their
intellectual ability and creative imagination, for the graphic revolution that
– promoted with persistence and humility – turned Cuban posters into an
important art form in the second half of the 20th century.

A veces 30

Similar a cualquier
A. Menéndez «Pepe», Iván Abreu, Alexander Pozo «Sandy», Fabián Muñoz,
Giselle Monzón, Claudio Sotolongo, Michelle Miyares, Arnulfo Espinosa, Ida-

that would make it difficult to be seen in public spaces, or too big as it would
cease to be practical. It is difficult to set size limits but, in general, posters
should be no less than 30 cm high (or we would call them fliers) nor more
than 200 cm wide (then they would be billboards). Finally, let’s consider their
rectangular shape. Most posters are vertical rectangles printed on one side
only, which makes both their production and circulation more efficient. Note
that the digital era has seen the emergence of a new form: non-printed post-
ers that make the rounds of social networks and websites; the communica-
tional intention is the same, and the dissemination capacity even greater.
They are, perhaps, the posters of the future.
2. Who makes posters?
Graphic designers make posters. This profession, art, or craft—whichever
you may prefer—has had other names in the past, as well as other functions
and purposes, but, at present, the general consensus is to call it graphic
design. So it is designers who design posters, almost always individually
(although there are posters made by two or more persons). Designers do
not usually create on their own initiative, but in response to a request,
whether public, private, commercial, non-profit, professional, political, or
by any institution that commissions posters when they have a message to
deliver to the public. The next step is to reproduce what the designer has
created. Printing shops of varied capacities and technologies multiply the
original design. The final step is to disseminate the message through its
distribution in public spaces. In short, if there is no need to communicate
something, there is no need to create a design; if there is no design, the
message does not take the form of a poster; and if there is no reproduction,
a poster will not be visible to the public.
3. Are posters works of art or products of an industry?
There is ongoing controversy about whether or not design is art. Let us
choose a conciliatory answer: contemporary design cannot be pure art
because its function is different, and it is unquestionably linked to commis-
sions and serial production. Nor can it be considered a technique because it
is impossible to ignore that creativity is a central component of its potential
success. We can say that posters emerge from the creativity of the designer
(art) and multiply at the printers’ (industry). Once they have fulfilled their
cycle of initial usefulness, they disappear from public view either because
they are taken down, or because new posters are glued on top of them. A
few survive this natural death and, for various reasons, start to be valued
(and even collected) by aficionados. With the passing of time, they may be
considered works of art.
4. When did posters first appear in Cuba?
Posters can be traced back to the second half of the 19th century—as doc-
umented by some experts—when Cuba was still a colonial possession of
Spain. Old photos show those first posters glued on city walls to promote
establishments and commercial services, but very few copies have been
preserved from those early times.
5. Are posters Cuban because of the artist, the theme or the production place?
A Cuban poster is both one whose designer is Cuban and one that has been
created for a Cuban institution. There are examples of artists who are not
Cuban by birth but whose legacy is part of the national poster art. Some
lived and worked for years here, others made only one or two posters. On
the other hand, there are posters created in Cuba for something that may
have happened in another country, and they, undoubtedly, are also Cuban
posters. It becomes more complicated when the designer no longer lives
in his country of origin and starts working for the country that took him in.
Those posters are still Cuban, but they are part of a different context. In
those cases, the designers should be left to decide for themselves whether
or not their posters are Cuban.
6. Why did Cuban posters become famous?
From this question one assumes that Cuban posters are indeed famous. We
may tone down the assertion by saying that Cuban posters became known
extensively in the mid-1960s, first in specialized circles and later among a
wider population. Although their circulation as message bearers was essen-
tially limited to Cuba, they crossed the seas, carried by visitors who were
attracted to them during visit to Cuba, or were recognized in other coun-
tries’ media or displayed in exhibitions. The graphic design world and art
critics alike did not take long to notice that in revolutionary Cuba, posters
were being produced in quantities and qualities that deserved attention.
The middle of that decade saw the first prizes in international competitions,
as well as group exhibitions in places of great prestige in Europe. In 1970, a
seminal book appeared documenting this story: The Art of Revolution, by
Dugald Stermer, with an essay by Susan Sontag, in which the poster is posi-
tioned as the image of the political and social events taking place in Cuba.
The renown of this art form grew until it was considered one of the most
outstanding examples in the world. So the best known Cuban posters are a
result of the Revolution that seized power in Cuba in 1959, and their inter-
national prestige benefits from the sympathy aroused by those triumphant
rebels and the forceful events in which the Cuban people were involved in
subsequent years.
Fourteen Questions (and Answers) about the Cuban Poster
1. What is a poster?
A poster is a visual message of which many copies are printed to be displayed
in public spaces. It can also be defined in another way, starting with the basic
materials: a poster is a rectangular piece of paper or cardboard displaying
a message, many copies of which have been printed for its dissemination.
If it does not bear a message, it has no clear intention of communication,
and a poster always wants to communicate something. If it has not been
printed—or if only one or very few copies exist—it cannot be properly called
a poster. It is difficult to calculate the number of required copies; sometimes
30 are enough. But above all, it is the intention of spreading the message that
determines whether it is a poster and not a work that speaks for itself or to
just a few people—a poster should aim at a large audience. Traditionally, it
has been made from paper or light cardboard. It should never be so small

(1959) whose posters have the predominant imprint of a single designer; and
the Instituto Nacional de Deportes, Educación Física y Recreación (National
Institute for Sports, Physical Education and Recreation, INDER, 1961).
11. Where can one see past Cuban posters?
Unfortunately, old posters can be seen only in books and catalogues
because there is no permanent venue for their display. However, frequent
temporary exhibitions of current or past works are held, particularly in
Havana. These shows have become an alternative way of maintaining a liv-
ing memory of this art form until the appropriate authorities understand
the need to create a museum of Cuban posters. The fragility of paper and
humidity of the Caribbean climate demand rigorous preservation, or this
great treasure will be lost within a few years.
12. Is there a poster market like the one dealing with art?
Such a market is not comparable, because Cuban art has more established
spaces and commercial forms in conjunction with an international market
that sets the standards. There is, however, growing interest in Cuban post-
ers. As serial works, they are sometimes bought as souvenirs, but other
times seller and buyer share the certainty of the exclusiveness of a particu-
lar work and the prices are not those of a simple travel memory.
13. How is a poster’s value estimated?
Several objective factors allow estimating a poster’s value, such as the state
of conservation of the piece, its age or the number of colors in which it was
printed (in the case of silkscreen), as well as subjective factors, including
quality of design. Where political posters are concerned, theme is a mat-
ter of primary interest. As with any work of art, the price is a convention
reached by approximation and may vary under the influence of diverse fac-
tors, for instance, the artist’s death or the reappraisal of an event or figure
associated with the poster, which may increase the interest of collectors. In
general terms, the appraisal would put the visual quality in first place, the
state of preservation in second, and the poster context in third.
14. What happened in the years that followed the period covered by this book?
In the last decade of the 20th century, after the fall of the Eastern Bloc, Cuba
suffered a profound economic crisis whose effects also became acutely vis-
ible in poster production. The generation of designers who graduated from
the Higher Institute of Design (ISDi) after 1989 found that this method of
public communication had almost disappeared. The love for posters and
the creative desires of a few designers have enabled us to have some testi-
monies of those 1990s in poster form, often financed by the designers them-
selves. With perseverance and attachment to the Cuban tradition, a new list
of designers has taken up the baton from the previous generation. Among
them are Eduardo Marín and Vladimir de León (who made up Nudo), José
A. Menéndez «Pepe», Iván Abreu, Alexander Pozo «Sandy», Fabián Muñoz,
Khiustin Tornés, Pedro Juan Abreu and the Spam group, followed by Nel-
son Ponce, Jorge Rodríguez «R10», the Liseloy duo (Lisette Vidal and Eloy
Hernández), Eric Silva, Laura Llópiz, Roberto Ramos, Raúl Valdés «Raupa»,
Giselle Monzón, Claudio Sotolongo, Michelle Miyares, Arnulfo Espinosa, Ida-
nia del Río and Pablo Monterrey, and more recently, Edel Rodríguez «Mola»,
Lilia Díaz «Lyly», Alejandro Rodríguez «Alucho» and Darwin Fornés. The
emigration of Cubans to other lands has taken some designers to distant
destinations where creating posters is not always a possibility. A few, how-
ever, search and find the opportunities, such as Frank Arbelo in Bolivia and
Carlos Zamora in the United States. It can be said that thanks to a group of
powerful, young, but already mature artists, Cuban posters of the second
decade of the 21st century have recovered the ability to communicate ideas
with visual codes that are, at the same time, heritage of a tradition and a
manifestation of the era of digital globalization.
7. What is the «golden age» of Cuban posters?
The golden age of Cuban posters is the decade from 1965 to 1975. Period-
izations are referential schemes that simplify the complexities of real life
and even out its subtleties. They serve the purpose of highlighting fluctu-
ations and help us to understand the circumstances that favor them; they
are the result of a historical look, never a chronicle in real time. Reviewing
that period, we perceive a maturity in the visual language of Cuban posters
by the mid-1960s. The first to attain a sustained quality were film posters.
Others joined them after a few years, reaching a peak around the turn of
the decade, when from six to ten institutions were producing posters reg-
ularly. Numerous designers—their number can be estimated at about one
hundred—mastered a shared graphic code that can be called a «Cuban
style» of poster making, and printing facilities were available to satisfy the
high demand. The Revolutionary Government chose posters as one of its
main guidance vehicles (i.e., propaganda, but also education and cultural
promotion). The number of weekly works per designer was remarkable, pro-
ducing high quality works, some of them among the best posters of all time.
By the mid-1970s, a repetition of forms and intentions started to become
evident. The following years also produced many first-rate works, but the
period of splendor is considered to have ended following those ten years.
8. Which artists were the most outstanding?
In order to avoid inaccuracies or bias, it is advisable not to reduce the list to
seven or ten, as previously done on occasions. The best-known cannot be
omitted, and some who are equally good should also be mentioned. Among
the former, Eduardo Muñoz Bachs, Alfredo Rostgaard, Antonio Pérez «Ñiko»,
René Azcuy, René Mederos, Félix Beltrán, Raúl Martínez, Antonio Fernán-
dez Reboiro, Olivio Martínez, Umberto Peña, Héctor Villaverde, Rafael
Morante, Asela Pérez, Eladio Rivadulla, Ernesto Padrón, Eufemia Álvarez,
Faustino Pérez «Fausto», Rolando de Oraá and Berta Abelenda. But also
César Mazola, Gladys Acosta, Jesús Forjans, Guillermo Menéndez, Helena
Serrano, José Gómez Fresquet «Frémez», José Lucci, Suitberto Goire,
Lázaro Abreu, Raymundo García, Ricardo Reymena, Pablo Labañino, Fran-
cisco Yanes, José Manuel Villa «Villita», José Papiol, Julio Eloy Mesa, Anto-
nio Carbonell, Luis Álvarez, Modesto Braulio, Raúl Oliva, Antonio Évora
«Tony» and Heriberto Echevarría «Heri».
9. How many Cuban posters are there?
The José Martí Cuban National Library conserves around 10,000 post-
ers from the period covered by this book, but its collection, despite being
the largest, is far from complete. Some of the graphic design workshops
that produced a considerable number of posters ceased to exist and their
records were lost, while the records of the remaining ones are only par-
tially reliable. Consequently, one can merely speculate until someone takes
the trouble of doing truly rigorous research. A moderate calculation would
show a figure that would likely go beyond 14,000 posters (some 2,000 film
posters, 10,000 political posters and another 2,000 of a diverse nature:
cultural, sports, tourism, etc.).
10. Which were the leading institutions?
Cuban posters have three great sources: political and social themes pro-
duced by the team in charge of propaganda at the Organizaciones Revo-
lucionarias Integradas (Integrated Revolutionary Organizations, ORI, 1961),
which later became the Partido Unido de la Revolución Socialista de Cuba
(United Party of the Socialist Revolution of Cuba, PURSC, 1962) and since
1965, Partido Comunista de Cuba (Communist Party of Cuba, PCC); the ones
produced by the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos
(Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, ICAIC, 1959); and the
political posters produced by the Organización de Solidaridad con los Pue-
blos de Asia, África y América Latina (Organization of Solidarity with the Peo-
ples of Asia, Africa and Latin America, OSPAAAL, 1966). Those institutions
sponsored a good many of the works produced from 1959 to 1989, including
many of the best examples. National information dissemination was carried
out in the early 1960s by the Comisión de Orientación Revolucionaria (Com-
mission for Revolutionary Orientation, COR)—renamed Department years
later (DOR)—until it finally adopted the name of Editora Política (Political
Publishing House). Always attentive to the most urgent themes of Cuban
life, for forty years this publishing house produced an impressive number
of posters and billboards created by different designers, and using diverse
graphic styles and reproduction techniques. ICAIC, on the other hand, is
a paradigm of stability and coherence: since 1959 it not only has used the
same name but prints its posters using the same traditional silkscreen tech-
nique, with a similar format and in the same workshop in Havana. OSPAAAL
has produced a crop of posters that, though small compared to ICAIC and
DOR, has great quality, to the point that some pieces have become objects
of true devotion for serious collectors. These three entities are followed by
the Consejo Nacional de Cultura (National Council for Culture, CNC, 1961-
1975) whose files have not been preserved, but it is still possible to appre-
ciate the distinctive beauty of the posters they produced; the Organización
Continental Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Estudiantes (Continental Latin
American and Caribbean Student Organization, OCLAE, 1966), with a very
characteristic style; the Latin American cultural center Casa de las Américas

L’ère digitale a vu
commande d’institutions privées, publiques, commerciales, non lucratives,
politiques, etc.
nique toujours quelque chose.

pas été conservées mais ayant produit des affiches d’une beauté propre ;
8. Quels noms d’affichistes peut-on retenir ?
autres 2000 diverses : culturelles, sportives, touristiques, etc.).

2. Wer stellt Plakate her?
Besuch in Kuba auswählten.
Ein Plakat will immer
etwas mitteilen.

lutionären Orientierung übernommen (COR, später umbenannt in Abteilung
den), José A. Menéndez «Pepe», Iván Abreu, Alexander Pozo «Sandy», Fabián
Muñoz, Khiustin Tornés, Pedro Juan Abreu und die Gruppe Spam auf, ihnen
folgten Nelson Ponce, Jorge Rodríguez «R10», das Duo Liseloy (Lisette Vidal
und Eloy Hernández), Eric Silva, Laura Llópiz, Roberto Ramos, Raúl Valdés
«Raupa», Giselle Monzón, Claudio Sotolongo, Michelle Miyares, Arnulfo Espi-
1970 erschien ein grundlegendes Buch in dieser Sache: The Art of Revolution
bringen. Sie resultieren aus einem historischen Urteil. Niemals sind sie eine Refe-
renz in Realzeit.
