Spokeswoman Eric Jover an-nounced yesterday that, af-ter several meetings of the advisory committee in re-

cent months, the minimum sale price of the tobacco carton will be at 24.95 euros. The minister argued that the consumer’s prices could of-ten be altered by «trade practices that were increasingly breaking the margins.» Jover declared that the Executive had detected «prices be-low 20 euros», which is why he said that with this new measure the pri-

ces will be increased «approximately in five euros».

In this sense, Jover detailed that more than 1,700 references of tobac-co prices have been collected and, ba-sed on this sample, an average spre-ad of close to 30% could be fixed com-pared to the sale price of the same Typology of products in the Spanish market. Also, the Executive spokes-man said that this new rate «is a clear commitment to responsible trade» and claimed «the fight against smug-gling» of the Government.

In relation to the demand of the recently established Union of Tra-ders of Tobacco of Andorra (UTCA) to

establish a minimum profit margin of 20%, Jover replied that this is «an element of negotiation that must ha-ve the sector itself of tobacco betwe-en manufacturers and traders ». For this reason, the minister considered that the Government should be kept apart from this issue.

«The minimum price edict gives comfort to the commercial sector be-cause it will also prevent a commer-cial struggle associated with whoe-ver is cheaper,» added Jover.

Installing radiation therapy in the Principality would requi-re an initial investment of five million euros. This is the figure

that emerges from the advisory stu-dies that the Government entrus-ted to the Catalan Institute of Onco-logy (ICO), and which was announ-ced yesterday in a written response to the Bulletin of the General Coun-cil, a question presented by the PS. In this same work, it is also stipula-ted that the initial investment of 5 million should be added one milli-on euros per year that would cor-respond to the operating expenses.

The Minister of Education and Higher Education, Ester Vi-larrubla, once again insis-ted on the willingness to re-

duce to 15% the teachers and possi-ble teachers of the Andorran system.
