I’m proud that my office has been able to play an important role in that renaissance- and I am committed to supporting further efforts to improve this corridor. Ensuring the safety of residents, businesses, and patrons is the first step toward a true revitalization of the community. For many years, this community lacked a consistent LAPD presence. I am proud to announce the return of regular LAPD bike patrols along Huntington Drive. These bike patrols will once again be a part of this community’s regular routine, and will help to improve public safety. Bringing City services closer to the community is a top priority for me. That is why I led the effort to create the El Sereno Constituent Service Center/Barrio Action Youth and Family Center. The Center will house some important programs and services for this community, including my El Sereno District Office and a new LAPD community field office. The Barrio Action Youth & Family Center, will also provide numerous services to the community including, gang prevention and intervention, youth mentoring, and after school programs. Like you, I am eagerly awaiting the opening of this facility so that we can bring important City and community services closer to our residents. Police Chief William Bratton and I announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in the El Sereno child molestation case. As many of you are aware, Huntington Drive is undergoing an

extraordinary revitalization. I’m proud that my office has been able to

play an important role in that renaissance-and I am committed to supporting further

efforts to improve this corridor.

That is why I led the effort to create the El Sereno Constituent Service

Center/Barrio Action Youth and Family Center. The Center will house some important programs and services for this community, including my

El Sereno District Office and a new LAPD community field office.

The Barrio Action Youth & Family Center, will also provide numerous services to the community including, gang prevention and intervention,

youth mentoring, and after school programs.

Like you, I am eagerly awaiting the opening of this facility so that we can bring important City and community services closer to our residents.

Police Chief William Bratton and I announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in the El Sereno child molestation case. This case is deeply troubling, and we are doing everything we can to apprehend the suspect.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 3, 2007, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The victim, a 7 year old male was walking from a store in the 5000 block of Huntington Drive. HUNTINGTON DRIVE CLEAN-UPS – CLEAN AND GREEN PROGRAM

A

AASCOT HILLS NATURE PARK

s my staff and I meet with residents in this area, I consistently hear that we need to keep

Huntington Drive clean. Huntington Drive in El Sereno serves as a primary transpor-

tation artery for the residents living in this community of the 14th Council

District. This is why I have provided $50,000 in funding to the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, Clean and Green program to provide clean-up crews that will be dedicated to keeping Huntington Drive clean and free of trash and debris.

Clean and Green program will provide: • 2 student workers for 50 weeks, working 20 hours per week and 1 supervisor. • Clean & Green has already started servicing the corridor regularly.

fter more than 75 yeas of waiting, in February 2007, community and business

leaders joined me at The Ascot Hills Nature Park to unveil plans for the

much anticipated regional park. Within the next year, residents will

be able to enjoy scenic hiking and biking trails, a learning area and numerous picnic areas similar to those currently offered at other regional parks such as Runyon Canyon in the Hollywood Hills or Ken Malloy Regional Park in the Harbor area. The park will provide 100 acres of open space in the community of El Sereno and the Northeast.

I encourage you to take part in the next series of community forums and give input on the design

for Ascot Hills Park. Please contact my El Sereno District Office for more information.

VALLEY GRADE SEPARATION PROJECT GROUNDBREAKING

A

Tammy Membreno, Commissioner Cynthia Ruiz and staff from Bureau of Engineering joined Councilmember Huizar at the groundbreaking for the much awaited Valley Boulevard Separation Project.

FAÇADE IMPROVEMENTS

B

fter thirty years of delays, construction on the Valley Grade Separation Project has begun. In May, 2007, I was joined by the President of the Board of Public Works, staff from the Bureau of Engineering, and numerous El Sereno residents and leaders for an official groundbreaking. The project involves the construction of a bridge connecting Valley Boulevard at either side of the Union Pacific Railroad crossing, thus allowing vehicles to travel over the tracks and avoid railway interference.

Commuters currently spend 30 minutes or longer passing some rail crossings near Valley Boulevard and Marianna Avenue. After decades of inadequate funding and delays, I fought the MTA’s initial recommendation to withhold supplemental funding from the project.

This project has tremendous importance to the community. Thanks to my office’s efforts and concerned residents, the MTA reversed its initial recommendation and approved $9 million in supple-mental funds to make this project a reality.

In all, the bridge will cost $54 million in funding from the MTA and Proposition C. It will be completed by Fall of 2009. This project is a critical component of my efforts to alleviate traffic conges-tion and improve the quality of life for residents in

El Sereno.

eautification of our community is a very impor-tant issue to me. I am excited to announce that businesses along the Huntington Drive corridor will soon be undergoing façade improvements.

These improvements are significant because they show that we care about the appearance of this area. Façade improvements will start with businesses along Huntington Drive North, between Rosemead and Castalia, and will commence within the next month.
