Lexica
Summary:
Lexica is a Harry Potter-like, 3D-game world designed for students ages 10 to 14. The initial version includes
12 months of episodic content as well as a gaming engine that allows students to plot, script, and build
episodes to share with others. Lexica is set in a vast, fantastical library in which the student explores with a
personal avatar that grows and earns magical powers as the student reads books from the game’s virtual
library. Within Lexica, students also progress through a series of skill-development-embedded games that
focus on acquisition of spelling, vocabulary, and grammar skills.
Lexica includes
• an eLibrary with some 550 texts, approximately half of which will be contemporary titles. Students
choose what they read and when they read.
• a “Questionary” that embeds engaging reading comprehension questions in virtually every book.
• a custom-designed eReader that supports readers struggling with complex texts.
• more than 10 ELA-embedded games that reinforce vocabulary, syntax, and fluency. Several of these
games have Spanish-language variants to support dual-language and ELL students.
• access to online communities that support the collaborative aspects of game-play and learning and
encourage focused student writing.

Spelling Stone
Summary:
Spelling Stone is a spelling puzzle game. To complete each level, players form words using prefixes and
suffixes known to cause spelling errors for grades 4 to 9 (e.g., “er” vs. “ar”). A detailed hint system allows
players to seek help or to receive targeted error correction when they spell a word incorrectly. Correct words
award the player with magical stones that can be placed on a circuit board. Once the circuit is complete, it
powers machines and a door mechanism within the Lexica game world.

• To improve spelling in the service of reading fluency during exposure to core curriculum texts and
outside sources

The Tomes
Summary:
The Tomes is a create-your-own-adventure series that focuses on vocabulary and features characters
from classic literature. Evocative social dynamics similar to those found in hit games such as Surviving
High School, entice middle-school students. The Tomes embeds difficult vocabulary into a relatable story.
Mechanics motivate students to seek out word meanings. Players can also tap for definitions.

Sentence & Sensibility
Summary:
Sentence & Sensibility is a word game that encourages students to learn varied and complex sentence
structures to create more sophisticated writing. The game consists of two modes. In the first mode, players
are given a set of words, with which they must form as many sentences as possible within a time limit; longer
and more complex sentences receive more points. In the second mode, players use the set of words to form
a quote from a great work of literature. Both modes encourage experimentation with word order and syntax
while providing immediate, corrective feedback to hone grammar skills.

To build mastery of semantics, parts of speech, and syntax while working with challenging words from
literature

Story Cards
Summary:
Story Cards is a multi-player, collectible card game featuring authors and characters from classic and
modern literature available in the eLibrary. Each card is beautifully illustrated and packed with information
about the character and the book in which he or she lives. Taking turns as they duel within the Lexica game
world, players collect cards for their Story Cards deck by reading books and answering comprehension
questions in a Story Cards-themed, embedded quiz layer called Questionary. Players are introduced to
dozens of books and can jump directly from playing the game to reading the book in which characters of
interest appear.

To motivate students to read more and improve comprehension through exposure to characters and authors
from the eLibrary

Mukashi Mukashi
Summary:
Mukashi Mukashi is a syntax and story-telling game based on Japanese folklore. The arcade-style game
mechanics, which give students control over a moving snake, make failure fun while engaging students in
sustained exploration of the impact of word choices within longer folktale narratives. While maneuvering the
dragon snake, each player must avoid obstacles; demon masks lurk around every corner. Students enjoy
creating their own legend and sharing their stories with friends.

To build knowledge of semantics (word interpretation), syntax (word order), and vocabulary (word meaning)
while creating a folktale

Welder
Summary:
Welder is the educational version of a top-selling mobile word game. Players practice spelling and vocabulary
development as they attempt to form words by carefully moving and reordering letters on the game board.
Sometimes a serendipitous move will form a cascade of words, all of which can be looked up in the game’s
dictionary. Get extra points by creating the vocabulary word-of-the-day from a list of high-priority words for
middle-school students.

Venture
Summary:
Venture is a bundle of quick-play games focusing on spelling, conjugating irregular verbs, and overcoming
confusion with homophones (words that sound alike but have different meanings and spellings—meat and
meet, flower and flour, etc.). Players must complete timed obstacles to make their way through an ancient
temple. Between puzzles, and to break up game play, students earn coins or fight bats and scorpions.

Inklings: Underground
Summary:
Inklings: Underground is an action game in which players advance by digging through a series of caves,
purifying “corrupt” soil by learning and using word parts, or morphemes, to fix broken words and sentences.
By the end of the game, players will have learned more than 100 morphemes helpful for understanding the
meanings of words.

Page Invaders
Summary:
Page Invaders is a fast-paced syntax game in which players form more and more complicated sentences to
defend against the oncoming invasion of worms. Playing the game helps refine students’ understanding of
grammar and encourages safe, fun exploration of syntax.

Word Play
Summary:
Word Play is an action puzzle game in which players traverse a written passage, solving puzzles that
