Vide order dated 20/12/2013, passed by the Maintenance Tribunal (Central District) under the Maintenance & Welfare of the Parents & Senior Citizens Act. 2007 directed SHO Karol Bagh to comply the orders within 15 days to the effect that her elder son Mr. Harsharan Singh will immediately vacate the ground floor for her mother Smt. Chand Kaur and also would liable Shri. Najeeb Jung, Lt. Governor of Delhi called a meeting on the issues related to Safety, Security & welfare of Senior Citizens at Raj Niwas, which was attended by J. R. Gupta on behalf of Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi along with other NGO’s/Officers of Delhi Government, including SBK Singh, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Rajiv Saxena, Deputy Director, Delhi Govt., & Shri Mathew Cherion, CEO, Helpage India. Subsequently, two working groups were constituted to suggest measures for welfare and safety of senior citizens in Delhi. J. R. Gupta alongwith other members were assigned to suggest measures for spreading awareness regarding available assistance schemes for older persons and implementation of maintenance and welfare of parents & Senior Citizens Act., 2007 & Mobilization of funds under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for the welfare of senior citizens in Delhi. The other Group was assigned to suggest availability & requirement of Old Age Homes & Shelter Homes. A 11 members delegation of Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi (an umbrella body of 11 lakh senior citizens), led by its Chairperson Shri J. R. Gupta met recently Shri. B. S. Bassi, Commissioner of Police. The other members were S/Shri. B. S. Yadav, (Dwarka), L.R. Garg, (Munirka), Arun Kumar Soin (Kailash Hills), Sardari Lal (I.P. Extn.), Ram Kumar Bali (Paharganj), R.K. Katiyal (Tagore Garden), R. K. Nanda (Shalimar Bagh), Ved Prakash Gupta (Mayur Vihar), Nand Lal Malik (Lajpat Nagar). The members brought to his notice to take remedial measures for the safety & security of Senior Citizens particularly lonely by strengthening deployment of beat constables across Delhi & also by convening regular meetings with S.H.O./DCP. She was forced to live in Faridabad after throwing out by her Son Oj Kumar from her own house of Harsh Vihar. to pay a sum of Rs. 5,000/- per month as maintenance allowance. J. R. Gupta met personally Shri. SBK Singh, Joint Commissioner Police (Crime) on 30.12.13 & requested for immediate compliance of aforesaid orders who in turn asked DCP (Central) to look into this case personally. Ambassador Satish C. Mehta joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1983. He took over as Director General, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (CCR) on November 22, 2013. Earlier after serving in France, Ivory Coast and Italy, he was Political Advisor to UN Head of Mission in Haiti during UN Peace Keeping Operations in 1995-96. He served as Director in the Indian Prime Minister's Office from 1997 to 1999 dealing with the strategic sector. From July 1999 to July 2002 he was Political Counsellor in the Indian Mission to the United Nations in New York, from where he went as Deputy Chief of Mission in Tel Aviv from 2002-2005. He served as India's Consul General in Toronto from 2005-2008. He served as Joint Secretary (North) in the Ministry of External Affairs from October 2008 until July, 2011. While conveying my good wishes for New Year to our readers of Monthly Newspaper “Elderly News”, we have been able to launch this paper containing four colour pages from New Year even without collecting any advertisement in a short notice and also to utilize the space to cover maximum news concerning senior citizens of Delhi

through Senior Citizens Council of Delhi affiliated with Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi (an umbrella body of 11 lakh senior citizens). The Council is also organizing various daily activities such as social, cultural, yoga, talk, interactive session, spiritual discourses etc by the renowned personalities on various issues at Deer Park, near Hauz Khas village between 7 am and 8 am in which senior citizens are participating in a large number particularly lonely. The Council/Confederation is also represented in Delhi Govt. State Council of Senior Citizens & National Council of Senior Citizens, Govt. of India respectively stands committed to the cause and care of elderly particularly with the active support & guidance of its President/Chairperson, Shri J.R.Gupta who has devoted himself fully to this noble cause including protection of lonely and destitute senior citizens from abuses and humiliations at the hands of their own children and others. A number of such cases have already been solved. Shri. Gupta has been instrumental to motivate 83 registered SCA’s so far in the fold of Confederation. In the past, senior citizens were not aware of about the various privileges/benefits being extended by Delhi Govt./Govt. of India. In order to continue interaction among our readers regularly all news concerning senior citizens and activities organized by all the affiliated Associations with the Confederation including news from Delhi Govt., Govt. of India, Delhi Police and Help Age India (Permanent Advisor of Confederation) would be covered. With your active support, we have been able to achieve a lot for senior citizens of Delhi till date such as recreational grants and maximum old age monthly pension etc. as compared to other States across the Country, yet we have to achieve more and call upon to join hands for the cause of unity to enable us to achieve our final goal in this field. In this direction, we would meet the new Chief Minister and Social Welfare Minister shortly. I hope “Elderly News” will become a valuable instrument among our readers to interact with each other regularly.

Senior Citizens Welfare Society (Regd), Shalimar Bagh AC Block organised a tour to Sheesh Mahal, Shalimar Bagh for their members. The enthusiastic group comprising of 112 members visited this Historical Site, which is a protected Monument. A walk around the place and the Cultural Programme by the members and a hot lunch made it a memorable outing for the participants.

All India Conference of Senior Citizens was held on 22 & 23/11/2013 at Lucknow on Geriatric Care in India in which more than 1200 Senior Citizens participated across India, which was hosted by Bhartiya Varisht Nagrik Samiti (BHAVANA). Chief Guest was Shri Sudhir Bhargava, Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India. Shri. J. R. Gupta, President of the Council along with Shri. D.P. Rupal attended the conference from Delhi at their own cost. S/Shri. J.R. Gupta (Delhi), R.N. Mittal (Hyderabad) & D.S. Grewal (Chandigarh) were also felicitated by the Chief Guest. J.R. Gupta also addressed the conference.

A 21 members delegation of Senior Citizens Council of Delhi led by its President J.R. Gupta visited Australia & New Zealand between 13th and 26th October, 2013. The other members were Bhagirath Prasad Agarwal & Mrs. Sudha Rani Agarwal (Vasant Enclave), Mohinder Kumar Bajaj & Mrs. Lalita Bajaj(Rohini), Zile Singh Chhillar & Mrs. Kamla Chhillar (West Patel Nagar), Gyan Singh Tokas & Mrs. Kamla Devi Tokas (Munirka Village), Jagat Prakash Gupta & Mrs. Usha Rani Gupta (Nehru Apartments, Kalkaji), D.R. Pillai (R.K. Puram), Girdhari Lal Gupta (Hargovind Enclave), Harish Narayan Gupta (Vishal Enclave), Shri Pal Agarwal (Noida), Mrs. Indu Bala Agarwal (Noida), Mrs. Satya Wati Dalal (R.K. Puram), L.R. Garg (D.D.A. Flats Munirka), Dharampal Rupal (Green Park), Subhash Grover (Shivalik) & Sat Narain Goyal (Rohini). The members participated in International U3A Conference of Senior Citizens held on 14th & 15th at Melbourne Town Hall on "Ageless Learning Begins with U3A." More than 150 representatives from 50 countries across the world also attended, which was organized by U3A Network Victoria & U3A Asia Pacific Alliance. Master of Ceremony were Mr. Paul O'Connor & Ms. Elsie Mutton. Shri J.R. Gupta represented India & addressed the Conference and briefly highlighted the benefits and privileges being available to Senior Citizens in India. He also mentioned about the various activities of the Council particularly protection of lonely senior citizens from abuses/humiliations at the hands of there own children and others. All the representatives of respective countries also addressed the conference and shared their information. The main focus was on "learning makes available the great ideas of the humanities, social sciences to explore across World, health and fitness, community connection, social integration and how to embrace technology in seniors sector." It was further decided to hold next conference in Nepal in October, 2014.

Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi (an umbrella body of 11 lakh senior citizens) coordinated Walkathon at India Gate on 1.10.2013 on the occasion of International Elders Day in association with the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India and Help Age India in which more than 4500 senior citizens participated. Shri J. R. Gupta, Chairperson of Confederation felicitated Chief Guest Kumari Selja, Union Minister by offering a bouquet on her arrival. She wished all the Senior Citizens present a long life & sound health and committed to look after their cause & care under various schemes already launched by her Ministry. She also flagged of the Walkathon and also marched towards India Gate along with Senior Citizens. Each participant was offered a T-Shirt & Cap. Refreshments were also served to all present.Shri Manikrao Gavit, Union State Minister, Shri. Sudhir Bhargava, Secretary, Shri. Anoop Srivastava, Additional Secretary, Shri. T. R. Meena, Joint Secretary, Shri. Mathew Cherian, CEO, Help Age India were also present.

A 7 members delegation of Confederation of Senior Citizens Association of Delhi led by its Chairperson J.R. Gupta visited Chandigarh on 19/11/2013 & 20/11/2013 on Exchange Visit supported by Help Age India . The other members were S/Shri B.S. Yadav, Ved Prakash Gupta , Arun Kumar Soin , Bhagirath Singh, R.K. Nanda & H.S. Khurana. The basic aim was to interact with various Senior Citizens Associations located in Chandigarh, Zirkpur and Mohali on reciprocal basis. From the side of Help Age India , Mrs. Geetika Sen Gupta accompanied the delegation members. State Head Shri Bhuvneshwar Sharma welcomed the members and briefed about various activities being carried out in Chandigarh and Punjab for Senior Citizens. After visiting some associations, it was found that activities like celebrating of birthdays, moral value education, medical check up camps etc. are being organized at their on cost as no financial support is being given by Chandigarh government, as compared to the facilities and privileges being extended by Govt. of Delhi for its Senior citizens as narrated by J.R.Gupta. We were very much impressed to see the Help Desk-Wheel Chair Service, in sector-17, Chandigarh Plaza Market being manned by the staff of Help Age India. we also visited Mohali Senior Citizens Association Centre being run by Dr. Amarjeet Singh Khehra, Chairman, Punjab Federation and other members. Lastely, we visited Senior Citizens Association, Zirakpur and each delegation member was offered a SAROPA as a respect.

Help Age India organised a grand function at India International Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi in association with Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi in which more than 200 members participated including the members of Senior Citizens Council of Delhi.Emminent Speakers namely K.N. Singh, M.P. Rajya Sabha, Ramjethmalani, M.P. Rajya Sabha,Vinod Mehta,Writer, Mark Tuli, Writer, Pavan K.Verma, Writer & Advisor, Chief Minister of Bihar, Mohini Giri, M.M. Sabherwal and P.C. Sen spoke about the various activities for the cause and care of elderly by help Age India during the last 35 years which were very much appreciated by the audience.While welcoming,Sh.Mathew Cherian,Chief Executive of Help Age India presented a detailed report about the functioning and upgrading its activities towards elderly across the country during the last 35 years.On this occassion, a report was also released by the Speakers including J.R.Gupta, Chairperson of the Confederation. Two plays were also shown on aging and brotherhood followed by Hug with the participation of some school students. J. R. Gupta complimented Help Age India,its staff and officers particularly Sh. Mathew Cherian, Chief Executive for rendering selflessness services and various activities concerning elderly across the country continuously through out the years.
