School for Professional Studies Teaching and Learning Workshops

These workshops are designed to promote successful development and design for blended and online teaching and learning. They are intended for any SPS instructor who is interested in building or improving their course, regardless of experience.

Monday, February 21, 6:00-8:00 pm, McGannon Hall 118

Getting Started with SLUGlobal This hands-on workshop will provide a walk-through of many features of SLUGlobal. In this session, you will learn how to customize your course, upload your syllabus, add announcements and make your course available to your students. We will also discuss how to use introductions to create a sense of connection between the instructor and students. Any remaining time will be devoted to the examination of online course design.

Monday, March 14, 6:00-8:00 pm, McGannon Hall 118

Best Practices in eLearning This purpose of this session is to introduce you to a framework for designing or improving your blended or online course. During this hands-on workshop, we will discuss online and blended, examine the evaluation rubric in detail, summarize the research on best practices in course design and delivery, review several exemplars of effective (and not-so-effective) online course design, and generate a personalized plan. Any remaining time will be devoted to participant Q & A.

Monday, March 28, 6:00-8:00 pm, McGannon Hall 118

SLUGlobal Interactive Tools: Blogs, Wikis, and Discussion Boards This workshop will demonstrate the various interactive tools in SLUGlobal; primarily blogs, wikis, and discussion boards. You will learn how to create all three and will identify ways to implement them to enhance student communication, reflection, and collaboration. Any remaining time will be devoted to activities that promote active and engaged learning.

Monday, April 4, 6:00-8:00 pm, McGannon Hall 118

Assessing Learners Assessing students online has benefits and challenges. This workshop will discuss how to create and deliver online tests, surveys, and assignments. We will also discuss how to manage and grade assignments via SLUGlobal’s Grade Center. Any remaining time will be devoted to other Grade Center functions.

Monday, April 18, 6:00-8:00 pm, McGannon Hall 118

Cool Web 2.0 Tools for Engaging and Motivating Students This hands-on, highly interactive workshop will introduce you to some of the exciting new Web 2.0 technologies that can be used to engage and motivate students.
