Notice to Primary Voters• The Presidential Nomination Primary (PNP) allows
Minnesotans to take part in selecting a major political party nominee for President of the United States. This primary replaces the “preference ballots” (straw poll) that were cast for President at party caucus meetings in the past.
• PNP voters must be eligible to vote in the State of Minnesota on the day of the PNP.
• Each major political party will have its own ballot listing only that party’s candidates for President and if the party chooses, uncommitted or write-in.
• The results of the presidential nomination primary must bind the allocation of the Minnesota major political party’s delegates.
• Before voting, election law requires that you select which major political party’s ballot you want. If you refuse to select one party’s ballot, you cannot vote.
• Your choice of major political party will not be public information, except that it will be made available to election officials and to the chairs of each major political party after the primary.
How to Vote in the Presidential Nomination Primary1. All voters must be registered.
a) If you already are registered to vote, go directly to the check in table.
b) If you need to register or update your registration, go to the voter registration table. There you will complete a voter registration application and show proof of residence.
2. Sign in with an election judge, choose your major political party ballot and receive
a voter’s receipt. Once you receive a voter receipt with your party choice listed, you
cannot change your mind.
3. Go to the ballot table and turn in the voter’s receipt. Your party’s ballot choice will
be listed on the voter receipt. You will receive that party’s ballot with only their
candidates, and, if requested by the party uncommitted and/or write-in, listed on the
ballot. You will receive instructions on how to mark the ballot.
4. Go to an empty voting booth
5. Mark your votes in one of the following ways:
Paper Ballot
Fill in the oval next to the candidate of your choice.
Ballot Marker
Use for ballotmarking assistance
Ask for assistance if needed.
6. If you make a mistake, ask an election judge for a new ballot.
7. Place your ballot in the ballot tabulator. Then promptly leave the polling place.
