DELIA SAVES THE BEACH, JULIE SAVES THE WATER

At the membership’s historic June 16 meeting, Dave Delia described his plan to mitigate the

erosion problems behind the bulkhead at the Community beach with the assistance of our road

chair Alan Hinman and Tom Carroll (of Carroll Brothers contractors). Their aim is to correct the

current onslaught of waves that habitually overtop the bulkhead and wash away the sand, leaving

a muddy mess behind. The remediation plan submitted by Tom Carroll includes a 5-foot wide

filter cloth-lined trench dug directly behind (north of) the bulkhead; it will run about 170 feet

from the current beach area east and slightly south. The trench is then to be filled with class-I

rocks (50-150 lb.) to a height of about three feet, which would be almost level with the current

mainland landscape. After this construction -- projected to cost between $5,000.00 and

$7,000.00 from our Shore Erosion control fund -- we could plant some beach roses (or similar

sand-loving species) along the landward side to climb over and beautify the rocks.

And Julie Winters reported on the drainage design work being completed by the Biohabitats

firm on the Chestnut Avenue drainage area. These designs call for a living shoreline, tidal/non-

tidal wetlands, and improved bio-retention swales along Chestnut and Newport Avenues and of

bio-retention areas. Construction is to be financed by our $500,000 grant approved by the State

Department of Natural Resources with the South River Federation serving as fiscal agent and

project manager for the project. In her report to a forthcoming Board meeting, Julie will present a

summary of priority areas in the Chestnut/Newport Avenues vicinity as well as designs that

community residents may adopt for use on their own properties.
