General notes
Nelson electorate centres on Nelson City and its hinterland. In the southwest the electorate includes the communities of Stoke, Richmond, Hope and part of Appleby, and the Waimea Inlet. The western and southern land boundaries are marked by the Waimea, Wairoa and Lee Rivers. North of Nelson City, the electorate extends to the eastern tip of Tasman Bay, and includes Todds Valley, Cable Bay, and Whangamoa.
The Nelson electorate dates back to 1853. Originally called Town of Nelson, from 1866 to 1881 it was called City of Nelson. It is the only electorate to have existed continuously since the first Parliament in 1853. It was a two-member electorate until 1881.
No boundary changes were made for 2014. Boundary changes in 2020 saw the settlement of Brightwater move to the West Coast-Tasman electorate to achieve that electorate’s required population quota.
The current MP for Nelson, Nick Smith (National), has held the seat since 1996, winning eight consecutive elections. He was previously the MP for Tasman for two terms. Harry Atmore (Independent) also held the seat for eight consecutive elections from 1919 until his death in 1946, and had previously represented the electorate from 1911 to 1914. Labour held the seat continuously from 1957 until Nick Smith’s 1996 win. No women have ever represented the electorate.
Four out of ten people (41.2%) in the Nelson electorate were aged over 50 at the 2018 Census, higher than the third (33.8%) of the New Zealand population generally. In 2018 Nelson had the fifth-highest proportion of people who said they were affiliated with no religion (55.7%), and the sixth-highest share of the population that were affiliated with spiritualism and New Age religions (0.6%). For those households that were paying rent in 2018, over one-third (37.6%) paid between $300 and $399 per week – the second highest share in New Zealand.
Nelson ranked fourth among general electorates for the share of the workforce in part-time employment (16.8%), and had the second-highest share (12.2%) for those working between 20 and 29 hours per week. The proportion of those employed working in the retail industry (10.8%) was the highest across New Zealand. The share working in the health care and social assistance areas (11.6%) was the largest industry sector for Nelson and above the New Zealand average (9.5%).

People
This section has a variety of information about people living in the electorate. Topics include population, ethnicity, religion, language, health, and iwi affiliation. The information comes from the 2018 Census, except for iwi affiliation. Information on iwi affiliation comes from the 2013 Census as this information is not available for 2018.
There is information on both Māori ethnicity and Māori descent as these are different concepts. Māori descent is based on ancestry and Māori ethnicity is based on cultural affiliation.

Housing
This section provides a range of information from the 2018 Census about homes and families in the electorate. It also has information about residential building consents issued.
The census distinguishes between dwellings, households, and families. A dwelling refers to the physical structure. A household is either one person who usually lives alone, or two or more people who usually live together. A family comprises a couple with or without children or one parent and their children.
There are two tables describing homeownership. They differ in measuring ownership at the individual or the household level. A household may own their dwelling but not all people within that household share in the ownership.

Work and incomes
This section includes information from the 2018 Census about work and income of people, households, and families. It also includes information about non-residential building consents issued.
Income is the total before-tax income of a person, household, or family in the 12 months ended 31 March 2018. Family and household income is derived by taking the income of all members aged 15 and over of the family or household. Income does not include Working for Families tax credits.
