whatnot. Electra knows that language well, but doesn’t want to bore you

with it. In fact, after seventeen years of building bikes, we know how to keep

riders happy. It starts with designing insanely comfortable bikes, engineered

with as much performance. This year, our family of bikes—Cruiser, Townie,

Amsterdam, and Kids’ bikes—has expanded to include the chic Ticino.

Electra bikes’ striking paint jobs and gawk-worthy curves are paid off with

equally impressive engineering. In the driver’s seat, the ride is smooth and

responsive, a testament to our constant innovation. You look good, you ride

about Electra

Inspired by classic European handbuilt bicycles, this

stylish new arrival answers the “What can I ride every day?”

question. Named for an Italian-influenced area of

Switzerland, Ticino’s vintage

design aesthetic, craftsmanship

and frame integrity were inspired

by the durable touring bikes

ridden throughout the region.

It’s the classic-era diamond frame

bike, fine-tuned for comfort no

longer found in today’s twitchy

frames. Stylistically, Ticino picks

up where bike builders of the '40s

and '50s left off, but embodies

Electra’s strict performance

standards. Add period-piece

components—retro-style hubs,

cranksets, chainrings, tourist

handlebars, brake levers, forks, pedals and rims—for a

classic ride that’s as modern as modern gets.

Fast-rolling 700c wheels complement a host of drive-

trains, from a single-speed all the way up to a 20-speed.

Upgrade, customize or accessorize your ride for all types of

cross-city spins, office commutes or weekend wanderings.

Two bears borrowed from the flag of

Berlin represent Electra’s founders,

who hail from that city, while the

blended rendering of the German flag

and Swiss coat of arms symbolizes

their mixed European heritage.

chrome-plated stem. Unique bar-end levers operate retro-style brakes–

Bikes, cars and traffic are prevalent

themes in Gerardo’s art, encouraging

the viewer to consider their effects

on the modern world. For Gerardo,

art and bicycling are both outlets by

which to express his views on politics,

consumerism, and environmental and

social issues. “Art is such a powerful

political tool,”

says Gerardo, explaining

that, to him, riding bikes is not just a casual activity, but a “political statement” as powerful as his art.

In his 20s, Gerardo moved to San

Diego and opened an art studio called

Acamonchi, where he creates commercial

and fine art in many forms. Tucked in

a mixed residential-industrial block

of San Diego, Acamonchi is a speck of

color in a crowd of apartments, thrift

shops, hip neighborhood cafes and the

occasional abandoned building.

Gerardo is known for his skills in

stencil-making and screen printing,

and makes posters, t-shirts and other

collateral for

his clients—

mostly action

sports brands,

bands and

a variety

of other

businesses.

His fine art,

primarily

collage-like

paintings, is

resplendent in

color and takes shape across a canvas

of recycled and found objects. An

expert in mixed-media, Gerardo uses

stencils, photographs, block prints,

free-drawing and painting techniques

to create urban, graffiti-like pieces

that have been shown in museums and

galleries worldwide.

Driving is something Gerardo

knows little about. Although

his left bicep is inked with a

lime-green Volkswagen Beetle

tattoo, he’s never owned a car

and doesn’t have a driver’s

license. “I know how to

drive; I just choose not to

drive,” says Gerardo. His

reasons for

living car-free

align towards

health, environmentalism and

anti-consumerism. “I’m anti-

car, but I live up to it.” And the

tattoo? “To me, this tattoo

represents contemporary Mexico

City,” explains Gerardo. “It tells the

story of the Mexico I experience

when I’m there—Urban Mexico.”

Gerardo was born and raised in

Ensenada, a small town 70 miles

south of the California-Mexico border where, as a

teenager, he discovered commercial art working

at print shops screening t-shirts and posters.

“Bike riding has great potential for

friendship and community,” says

Gerardo, as he talks about the purpose

of these mass rides—to laugh, have

fun, meet new people and get crazy

on bikes in a peaceful expression of

individuality. But in the original spirit

of critical mass, these rides harbor an

undercurrent of grassroots activism

as well. “There’s a political statement

behind them,” says

Gerardo. “Reclaiming

the streets, making it

safe for everyone to

ride and reminding

motorists to be more

aware and drive safely.”

Gerardo Yepiz is in a gang. But

don’t worry, they practice non-

violence. It’s a bike gang, actually,

and they call themselves the

Cretins. Gerardo rode with the

Cretins the other night and into

the early hours of the morning.

Aboard a variety of bicycle types—

mountain bikes, cruisers, low-

riders, fixed gears, tall bikes, road

bikes, custom-built bikes and

others—150 riders dressed in a

wild array of outfits took to the

streets of San Diego for a pedal-

powered party on wheels.

Speaking of breaking rules, this bike wrote the book.

The colorful mosaic of tattoos that

adorns 27-year-old Erica Leite’s arms

and chest tells a stylized tale of her

life and loves. Artwork spirals around

both arms in a surreal seamstress’s

fantasy with hints of religious undertones:

above Erica’s left elbow, a spool of

thread floats near a dress form

shaped like the Virgin Mary; a

pincushion rests on her inner arm,

red and heart-shaped, with a burning

cross spouting from

its pinnacle; on

her left forearm,

an elegant pair of

praying hands clasp

not rosary beads, but

a tailor’s measuring

tape. The images

on Erica’s arms

culminate in the

tattoo inked across

her chest just inches

below the collarbone:

a scroll-like banner

that reads “PASSION

TO INSPIRE.”

Erica says her tattoos represent

her upbringing and interests. “My

dad was a minister, so I grew up

around religion. But my religion is

my arts and my passions, and one

of those is sewing,” Erica says. A

handful of pattern-making classes

during college released Erica’s

inner seamstress and resulted

in the founding

of her own

independent

clothing line,

Pink Pistol,

which sports

a vinyl and

polka dot-laden

undercurrent

of '50s pinup

girl/rockabilly

style. “I create

each piece

from concept to completion: from

making the pattern, to cutting and

sewing the fabric, down to attaching

the buttons. I love to know that I

create every piece by myself in its

entirety,” says Erica.

Her theory must work, as Erica’s job is both

inspiring and beneficial to many. As the

Youth Outreach director and the Music

For Awareness director for the nonprofit

organization, Keep A Breast Foundation (KAB),

Erica’s positions

entail raising money

for and awareness

of breast cancer

prevention and

education. KAB

began with the

idea to create

plaster casts of

female volunteers’

torsos, ask notable

artists to paint the casts and then auction

off the finished products as funky modern

art pieces. The proceeds were used to fund

breast cancer awareness and prevention efforts.

KAB still creates the painted breast casts,

but the idea has grown

to leverage action sports

stars, celebrities, musicians

and a diverse group

of designers to bring

breast cancer awareness

to younger generations

through hip, youth-directed

educational programs

and events with an eye

on prevention.

As the official Music For Awareness

director with KAB, Erica travels

much of the year to attend music

tours and events worldwide

promoting the foundation’s mission.

“I pretty much live on a tour bus,”

laughs Erica, as she talks about

being on the road

for months at a

time. But the long

hours and hard

work have all been

worthwhile for

this pretty, copper-

haired activist with

kind eyes and an

easy sense of self-

confidence. “My dad always asked

me the top three things I wanted

out of life. My answer was always,

I want to travel, I want to meet as

many people as I can, and I want

to create art,” says Erica. “With

KAB, I’ve got it all covered and

more in a really cool, fun way.”

True to her passions, Erica volunteered with the

organization for three years and even quit a paid position

as a product developer with a skateboard company to

pursue her volunteer work with KAB. “I wanted to

dedicate all my time to KAB. It involved everything

I ever wanted to do: art, music, travel, people, fun—

and all for a good cause,” says Erica.

When asked about the powerful

motto emblazoned across her chest,

Erica answers, “Whatever I do, I

just want someone to be inspired

by it. I have this tattoo to remind

myself that what I do on a daily

basis is done to benefit others.”

With a newfound confidence, in 1992 Candye recorded

her first album, Home Cookin’, and has since recorded

eight more. Instead of renouncing her past, or her

body shape, she has leveraged

them as inspiration for the

largely autobiographical songs

she writes with titles such as “Hey!

Toughen Up!” and “Work What

You Got If It’s A Little Or A Lot.”

“These songs are my ammunition

against the trials and tribulations

of the world,” declares Candye. “I

try to use meaningful words and

positive affirmation to write

songs that heal me as I sing them,

and empower others as they hear

them,” she explains. Referring

to a line from her song, “I’m The

Toughest Girl Alive”, Candye says,

“When I sing the line, ‘I’m the toughest

girl alive/I’ve walked through the

fire and I’ve survived’, the more

times I sing it, the more powerful

it becomes. It heals me as it heals

the listener.”

And healing is something Candye

knows quite intimately. Diagnosed with pancreatic

cancer, she recently underwent a major surgery

and long recovery to bounce back with a renewed

spirit and a cancer-free body.

Fueled by a lifetime of overcoming obstacles, Candye taps into her

resulting strength to help others overcome their own hard-

ships. Through the nonprofit organization she co-founded and

acts as spokesperson for, United By Music (UBM), Candye teaches

physically and mentally handicapped people songwriting and stage-

performance skills to bolster their confidence and celebrate their

unique abilities. “United By Music uses the blues as a metaphor to

help special-needs people transcend their daily challenges,”

says Candye. UBM has toured the Netherlands and Belgium,

and appeared at the IASSID World Congress (for people with

disabilities) in Cape Town, South Africa, and the World Down

Syndrome Congress in Dublin, Ireland.

“Every time we look past our own limitations and the limitations of those around us, we become a little bit stronger. Music heals,” says Candye, with all the authority in the world to make such a claim.

Candye Kane’s story is one of triumph

over adversity—on many levels. Though

this musician has recorded nine critically-

acclaimed CDs, performed alongside a

host of musical legends like Ray Charles,

B.B. King and Van Morrison and has

received numerous accolades, including a

nomination for a National Blues Foundation

Award for best blues contemporary

female, her troubled adolescence fraught

with crime and squalor would seem an

impossible starting point for a successful

career in music and entertainment.

But for this fiery blues performer with

an irrepressible spirit and

strong sense of eternal

optimism, it proved the

perfect foundation for

her music—helping her

spread a powerful message

of hope, encouragement

and turning obstacles

into inspiration.

Raised in poverty on the

backstreets of Los Angeles,

Candye was taught at age

9 to shoplift by her mother.

By age 17, she found

herself a single mom

dependent on charity

and food stamps. She

experimented briefly with

drugs and gang life. But

Candye never lost sight of

her lifelong dream to become a musician.

“From the time I was a little girl, I knew

I could sing,” says Candye. “When I was

being abused at home as a kid, I found

out I could get attention—kind words and

love from strangers—by singing. I wrote

my first song when I was 11. Music and

writing gave me confidence and a glimpse

of what my life might be like.”

When a career in music seemed impossible,

Candye decided to go to college. Through her

studies, she discovered the blues and unearthed

a passion for a musical tradition rich with

characters similar to herself. “I saw a world

full of large-sized women with colorful pasts

who overcame hardship to celebrate their size

and sexuality,” Candye says, talking about her

introduction to women blues

musicians like Dinah Washington,

Big Mama Thornton and Bessie

Smith. Right away she related

to their stories, to their earthy

voices full of alternating

tones of joy and suffering, and

connected with the prevalent

theme of surmounting adversity

that winds its way through

many blues songs.

With a lot of hard work and an overwhelming

desire to succeed, Candye pulled herself

from the limiting world she had been born

into, and in her 20s, began a new life as

a musician. Performing around L.A., she

caught the attention of a major record label,

and after recording her first demo, she

was poised to embark upon a new career

as a country music singer when her past

resurfaced to haunt her. When the record

label executives learned of her questionable

history, they dropped her. Agents and

managers encouraged her to lose weight

and completely change her image. She

was heartbroken.

C O N N E C T

As a percussionist with

the internationally-

acclaimed band,

Ozomatli, Jiro

Yamaguchi has circled

the globe countless

times fueled by a passion for travel

and culture, while using music to

spread a message of connectedness,

unity and peace. The multi-racial,

multi-ethnic band formed on the

streets of Los Angeles 14 years ago

to support a labor protest, borne out

of community activism in the rich,

cross-cultural context of the City of

Angels. Drawing inspiration from an

array of sources as varied as the band

members themselves—hip hop, R&B,

merengue, cumbia, funk, rock, reggae,

salsa, dancehall and more, with lyrics

in both English and Spanish—Jiro

describes their vibrant, celebratory

sound not only as “L.A. music,” but

as “music of the world.”

The like-minded couple met at

a sold-out Ozomatli show to which

Lorri did not have a ticket.

Following an intuitive feeling

that she had to attend the concert,

through a strange and wonderful

chain of events that Lorri now

chalks up to “serendipity” (she keeps

a serendipity diary filled with such

fateful happenings), Lorri got into

the show and connected with her

future husband. These days, Jiro

and Lorri are focused on raising

their daughter and learning from her

along the way. “Every day she teaches us,” says Lorri, “about ourselves, about each other and the potential we have as humans when our spirits are uninhibited.”

“Having Etsuko has definitely made

it more difficult to be on the road and

away from home, but we find ways

to make it work,” says Jiro. Making

it work has been successful in large

part thanks to Jiro’s wife and mother of

Etsuko, Lorri Espinosa Yamaguchi,

whose love and understanding helps

keep the family connected even when

being physically together is impossible.

Lorri owns a day spa in Santa Fe,

New Mexico, where she encourages

clients to reach for a deeper level

of self-awareness using sensory

deprivation tanks, belief management

techniques, massage and polarity

therapy. “My hope,” says Lorri, “is to

help the planet move toward a more

inclusive and cooperative paradigm

in whatever way I can.” “My wife is

the best,” says Jiro. “We have a really

great relationship in that we help

each other grow. We challenge each

other to become better people.”

Though his band has received two

Grammys, a Latin Grammy, two

Billboard Latin awards, and an ALMA

award among other honors, when

asked about the most memorable

and important moment in his life,

Jiro’s answer falls outside the realm

of musical accomplishments: the birth

of his now 9-month-old daughter,

Etsuko, whose name means “child

of delight” in Japanese. “The birth

of my daughter is my

proudest moment,”

says Jiro. “My child

has transformed me

to appreciate life in

a whole different light.

She amazes me every

single day.”

Because their music is laced with

politically-charged, anti-war messaging,

Ozomatli was surprised when, in

2007, they were chosen by the U.S.

State Department to act as

Cultural Ambassadors on

a government-sponsored

tour of South America,

Africa, Asia and the

Middle East. After much

internal discussion and

debate, the members of

Ozomatli accepted the

controversial offer, and

decided to use the tour as an incredible

opportunity to facilitate change. “We

wanted to go to these places, meet the

people, and break down stereotypes.

We wanted to connect as people,” says

Jiro. Playing free public concerts and

visiting art centers, orphanages and

even a refugee camp, Ozomatli’s

presence and music perpetuated

a message of peace and strength

through diversity. “From the very

beginning, this band has been about

community. Our message is one of

inclusion,” says Jiro. “Everyone in

the band is from totally different

backgrounds, but instead of having the

mentality of, that’s not going to work,

Developing his talent and working alongside icons of Kustom Kulture

such as Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Jimmy C made a name for himself as a

master of automotive art that has led to gigs creating graphics and

various forms of artwork for well-known brands like Gretsch Guitars,

Hot Wheels, Budweiser, Toshiba and others, along with a list of loyal

clients and automotive customers who keep coming back for more.

“Custom cars are for people who like people; they give you something

to talk about with almost anyone,” says Jimmy C, explaining the attraction

to Kustom Kulture. “Riding around town in a custom car just makes

you feel good. It’s all about having fun.”

Jimmy C is the kind of guy you wished you’d

had as an uncle growing up—the type who’d

probably bring candy when he came to visit,

or take you for a cruise on his chopper when

mom wasn’t looking. Well-spoken, he has a

knack for animated storytelling marked by

exclamations hailing

from another era

(“Dynamite!” “Neat!”),

and a lilting cadence

to emphasize the high

points. Raised in New

Mexico and Arizona,

Jimmy C got his start

painting signs before

moving on to vehicles.

Enticed by visions of

California perpetuated

by music, TV and the

movies, Jimmy C credits the SoCal allure with

drawing him into Kustom Kulture. “You

know, the beach, surfing, the girls, the cars, the

drag strip, all that kind of stuff,” says Jimmy C,

commenting on the cultural phenomenon that

developed around fast cars and the California

lifestyle. Explaining what the early days of

Kustom Kulture were all about, Jimmy C

laughs, “Hanging out on the beach all day

surfing, then at night, going out in your hot rod to

the drag to burn some rubber. Get all your buddies

together and see who’s got the fastest car!”

Jimmy C is a sign painter and automotive artist

who does things the old-fashioned way—by hand—

and one of the few remaining holdouts in an industry

vastly changed by computers and technology. As the

script-like lettering on his storefront window will

attest, he specializes in “signs, pinstriping, scallops,

flames, logos, gold leaf, cartoons, airbrush, sculp-

ture, canvas, rats, tikis & skulls”—the last three

mostly in the form of sculptures, gearshift knobs

and toys. Jimmy C is widely celebrated in

the genre of automotive art, which he calls an

“American art

form,” and his

hand-painted

flames, murals,

pinstriping and

cartoon-like

characters have

graced everything

from muscle cars

and motorcycles

to megaphones

and mailboxes

(along with a few

select Electra Bicycle

models). His

intricate, freehand

pinstriping is

complex and

amazingly

symmetrical,

and his flames

crackle with beauty

bookshelves and crowd every

available workspace, from

Weaving through the asphalt aisles

of a nondescript San Clemente

industrial park, you’ll know you’ve

found Jimmy C’s shop when you see

the massive, orange conversion van

parked out front—the one with blue

flames licking up the sides, an

elaborate band of tribal-themed

pinstriping and a grinning pinup

girl graphic. You can’t miss it.

If you’ve come to see Jimmy C,

chances are, like him, you’re part

of the “Kustom Kulture” scene—

that distinctly American subculture

that revolves around custom cars

and motorcycles and has its roots

in early '50s hot rodding.

Referring to Kustom Kulture enthusiasts,

Jimmy C says, “Everybody has to own

at least one [vehicle] with flames.”

And what do the flames symbolize?

“The engine’s so hot, it’s on fire!” he

roars, erupting into a wheezy fit of

laughter that’s full of passion and

completely contagious.

An accidental entrepreneur, Tim says

he fell into the music and entertainment

industry after college when he and

another music-loving buddy “got this

crazy idea to put on a show of our own.”

The year was 1979, and

the SoCal punk rock scene

was just beginning to

take off. “We rented a hall

in East Hollywood, hired

some LA punk bands—

The Weirdos, The

Plugs, Suburban

Lawns—and a San

Diego band called

The Penetrators.”

Tim and his friend

did all the promoting

themselves—driving

to LA on weekends

to staple flyers to

phone poles; their

marketing efforts

paid off. “The place was

packed; 500 people showed

up,” remembers Tim. “We had

no idea what we were doing,”

he says, “but we learned

along the way and it went

really well.”

One day, Tim hopes to

pass the Casbah on to

Keith, who shares his

passion. “He’s a huge

music fan,” says Tim.

“I think he’d love to

step into my shoes here

and get involved in the

business. I’m getting

older,” admits Tim, “so it will be

cool to have somebody to pass it

on to.” Tim says that, amidst

the hectic world of music and

entertainment, his son keeps

him focused and grounded.

“I’ve gone through periods in

the past where I would get

a little crazy and not be able

to concentrate on things, but

Keith inspires me to set a

course and stay on track. He makes me want to do my best in everything.”

Tim Mays is a busy guy. As the

owner of two restaurants, a coffee

shop and San Diego’s most venerable

independent rock venue, The Casbah,

Tim compares his day-today

duties with those of a fireman.

“I’m constantly putting out fires.

Among all four places, there

are a million things happening

every day,” he says. Tim spends

most weekdays in his office at

the Casbah, where, for the past

two decades, he’s worked booking

bands ranging from the local and

obscure to those destined to pack

10,000-seat arenas. The Casbah

has reached near worldwide fame

for promoting new, up-and-coming

artists on their way to stardom.

Bands like the now ultrapopular

White Stripes, The Smashing

Pumpkins and The Killers played

the Casbah before they became

mainstream. “Oh, and Nirvana

played here before they got big,”

says Tim, testament to the Casbah’s

knack for attracting soon-to-be

superstars. Tim credits this in

part to the solid relationships he’s

formed with his booking agents.

“Over the years, my agents have

shown a consistent eye and ear

for picking bands to book, and I’ve

developed my career as a promoter

along the lines of their careers,”

says Tim. “I trust them and they

trust me. They know they can send

new bands here, and they’re going

to be treated with respect.”

Though he’s the owner of San

Diego’s most beloved rock-n-roll

venue, Tim’s most important job

title is “father.” Tim finds everyday

inspiration in his 15-year-old

son, Keith Mays, whom he credits

with helping him stay in tune

with the largely youth-oriented

music industry. “My son is at

the age now where I can ask him,

‘Hey what do you think about

this band?’ and he’ll give me the

thumbs-up or thumbs-down,”

says Tim. “Keith and I like a lot

of the same bands. Old stuff—

Led Zeppelin, The Rolling

Stones and Bob Dylan—but

new bands, too, like The

White Stripes and Bright

Eyes,” adds Tim. “Keith

listens to a lot of new stuff

I haven’t heard before. I’ll

ask, ‘Hey, what is that?’ and

sometimes he won’t tell

me because he wants to

make me guess. It’s a little

game we play

back and forth.”Tim continued to book bands throughout

the '80s, putting on shows “wherever we

could find a place that would let us do it,”

he says. In 1989, Tim and a few partners

started the Casbah. “I never thought this

would be my career—it was just a hobby.

I wanted to hear bands who weren’t

coming to San Diego, so I’d bring them

down here just so I could see them.”

To Brigida, nursing is an incredibly rewarding job, but she’s

quick to admit it’s not always easy. “You’re dealing with parents

and families in a highly stressful situation, while trying to

maintain the life of a very sick child,” she shares, talking about

the challenges of her job. “But the kids who recover and come back and look wonderful that’s when you know you really did something great,” says Brigida. Looking up, she flashes the

broad, comforting smile—the kind of smile that’s bound to make a sick child

feel just a tiny bit better.

Brigida Martinez believes that every

person has something great to offer.

Something that makes them special,

makes them valuable or makes them

important. “Everyone in the world,”

says the soft-spoken, 34-year-old

with understanding eyes and the

type of big, beautiful smile you can’t

help but smile back at.

Brigida’s “something” is nursing.

In her twenties, a love of the ocean

brought Brigida from the Midwest to

California as a traveling nurse, where

she found employment at hospitals

from Santa Maria to San Diego. “Ever

since I was a kid, I wanted to travel

and see the world,” says Brigida.

Through nursing, Brigida has been

able to see the world in a way she

probably never imagined. As a

volunteer nurse with the charitable

organization International Children’s

Heart Foundation (ICHF), Brigida has

traveled to developing countries with

a team of medical professionals—

from nurses to surgeons—that

operates on children with congenital

heart defects who might otherwise

perish from lack of resources and

sufficient care. Since 2007, Brigida

has made five medical-mission trips to

the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

Brigida gives up on trying to explain

the different types of heart defects

commonly found in her patients, and

instead draws an expert diagram of

a heart on a piece of notebook paper.

Giving an impromptu anatomy lesson,

she explains the differences between a

healthy heart and one with problems.

“This is a VSD—ventricular septal

Cumbersome medical

terms roll off her tongue sounding so

sweet and friendly, it’s hard to believe

she’s speaking of life-threatening

illnesses, and easy to imagine how a

critically ill child might find comfort

in her voice alone.

As an RN in the pediatric intensive care unit at Rady Children’s

Hospital in San Diego, California, Brigida specializes in

cardiac surgery. “I work mostly with children who are born

with congenital heart defects, where the heart hasn’t developed

correctly,” she says.

These trips are not simply vacations hiding beneath the guise of philanthropy.

“We stay for two weeks and work the entire time—12-hour shifts, day or night,”

Brigida says. “On the missions I’ve been on, we usually do between 18 and 25

surgeries during the two weeks. That’s a lot.” Besides its immediate goal of

saving children’s lives, the ICHF hopes to bring the skills, technology

and knowledge needed to treat kids with congenital heart defects to

developing countries. “We try to train the hospital staff to be self-
