Part-turn actuators SG

Function

AUMA part-turn actuators serve tooperate part-turn valves. The motorrevolutions are reduced and trans-formed into a swivel movement via aplanetary and worm gearing.

AUMA part-turn actuators SG canclose and open the valve either inlimit or torque seating. For this pur-pose two independent measuringsystems are integrated into the con-trol unit. Limit and torque seatingrequire different logic connections ofthe actuator signals, which must berealized in the controls.

When using the actuator controlsAUMA MATIC the desired seatingmethod can be set by a switch.

Limit seating in opening and clo-sing direction

The limit switches are adjusted sothat the actuator switches off at thedesired end positions.

Torque seating in closing direction

Certain valve types are torque-seated. In this case the torque swit-ching is set to the desired tripping tor-que. The limit switching is set so thatthe switch trips just short of the endposition. By utilizing both signals inthe controls the signal ‘end positionreached’ can be transmitted to thecontrol room.

Torque switching as overloadprotection

The torque switching acts as over-load protection for the driven valve inboth directions over the whole travel. The actuator is switched-off if the tor-que switching is tripped before rea-ching an end position, i.e. due totightness of the valve or a trappedobject. In this case the signalisationof the limit switching is missing, the-refore a fault signal is indicated at thecontrol room.

Corrosion protection / Paint finish

KN (Standard)

The standard AUMA corrosion pro-tection KN is a high quality coating, suitable for outdoor installationseven in a moderately aggressiveatmosphere.

After thoroughly de-greasing, sand-blasting and cleaning, a high-cover-ing synthetic resin based primer isapplied.

Aluminium parts, e.g. covers, areelectro-dip coated.

The entire actuator is coated with atwo-component paint based onpolyurethane with micaceous ironoxide.

The outside bolts at the plug coverand switch compartment cover are ofstainless steel.

The standard colour of the finish coa-ting is silver-grey (DB 701, similar toRAL 9007). The total film thicknessfor KN is at least 60 µm.

KS

AUMA recommends this corrosionprotection class for installing units inaggressive atmospheres, e.g. mari-time climate or aggressive chemicalsubstances (e.g. sewage works, chemical plants).

In addition to the KN corrosion pro-tection measures, all cast iron partsreceive a metallic surface protection. Before finish coating an interme-diate coat is applied. The total filmthickness for KS is at least 140 µm.

KX

AUMA recommends this corrosionprotection class for installing units inextremely aggressive atmospherese.g. in cooling towers.

For KX all cast iron parts are provi-ded with a metallic surface protec-tion. Before finish coating the actua-tor, two intermediate coatings areapplied. The total film thickness forKX is at least 225 µm.

EU-Directives

According to the MachineryDirective part-turn actuatorsare not complete machines.AUMA’s Declaration of Incor-poration confirms that duringthe design stage the Stan-dards mentioned in the Direc-tive were applied. The Low Voltage and Elec-tromagnetic CompatibilityDirectives are to be appliedto part-turn actuators.AUMA part-turn actuatorsfulfill all requirements ofthese Directives. There-fore, AUMA has Certifica-tes of Conformity availa-ble. According to the mar-king liability the CE mark isstamped on the actuatornameplate.

Part-turn actuators SG

Components of part-turn actuators SG

AUMA part-turn actuators are of uni-form and modular design for theentire type range (4 sizes).

Gearing

The motor revolutions are transfor-med into the required swivel move-ment at the output drive by a plane-tary and worm gearing. The requiredoperating time is achieved by theproportionate combination of thegear reduction ratios.

End stops

At the end of the worm shaft is athreaded spindle. When the gearingruns in OPEN or CLOSE direction atravelling nut moves towards the cor-responding end stop. The swingangle is adjustable between 80° and110°. On request part-turn actuatorscan be supplied with another settingrange.

The following advantages are theresult of this design:

The end stop load is not transmit-ted to the gearbox housing but isabsorbed by the limit stopspindle.

The setting of the end stop is onlynecessary for one end positionsince the required swing anglewas set at the factory. A laterchange of the swing angle can beeasily made.

Motor

Reliable service of the part-turnactuators is guaranteed by speciallydeveloped AUMA motors having ahigh starting torque. This is requiredto guarantee unseating of fully clo-sed valves.

All motors are braked after switch-off– therefore the overrun of the SGpart-turn actuators is extremely low.For standard voltages and frequen-cies refer to technical data on page18.

3-phase AC motor

AUMA uses 3-phase AC motors withsquirrel cage rotor. The motor is sub-ject to very little wear and tear onaccount of the small number ofmechanical components.

1-phase AC motor

The operating time for part-turnactuators with 1-phase AC motors isadjustable within a wide range. It caneasily be set to the specific condi-tions on site.

Motor protection

The tropicalized winding has insula-tion class F according to VDE 0530or IEC 85.Thermoswitches are provided to pro-tect the motor windings. Integratedinto the controls they protect themotor by interrupting the control cir-cuit as soon as a temperature of140 °C is exceeded.

On request thermistors can be builtinto the motors.

Manual operation

A handwheel is available at thepart-turn actuator for manual opera-tion, e.g. for setting during commis-sioning.The manual operation actson the worm shaft due to anover-riding gear arrangement. Thehandwheel lock must be disengagedfor operation. During electric opera-tion the handwheel remains statio-nary.

Control unit

Limit and torque switching, as well asoptional extras for position feedback, are mounted in the control unit.Twoindependent measuring systems areintegrated into the control unit to regi-ster the valve travel (valve position)and the demanded output torque. For further information please referto page 11.

Mechanical position indicator

The exact position of the valve iscontinuously visible through a sightglass of the mechanical position indi-cator.

Limit switching

The stroke is limited via electricallimit switches operated by adjustablemechanical counter wheels. Theswitch point repeatability error isalmost zero. The limit switching is notonly active during motor operation, italso functions under manual opera-tion, in other words, as long as thecontrol supply is present a signalindicating end position reached willbe available even when operating byhand.

Torque switching

The torque switching works on theprinciple of the sliding worm. Theworm for measuring can be axiallydisplaced on the shaft, in proportionto the thrust against the disc springs. This movement is transmitted to thetorque switching in the control unit.

The required tripping torque is easilyset at the corresponding dial andindicated directly in daNm (≈ 1 mkp)for OPEN and CLOSE direction.

Single switches

For torque- and limit switching highquality microswitches with springmechanism are used as standard.

Double breaking (SPDT) switchingelements are placed in the entirelyenclosed housing of high chemicalresistance.

The wiring diagrams show just two ofmany possibilities of external wiringfor part-turn actuators SG in versionAUMA NORM (without actuator con-trols AUMA MATIC).

The diagrams are based on part-turnactuators with 3-phase AC motorand basic equipment, closing thevalve clockwise. They are drawn forthe valve in an intermediate position,i.e. no switch is operated.

The motor is sufficiently protected byintegrated thermoswitches. A ther-mal overload relay is not required, unless specified by national directi-ves or company standards.

For explosion-proof part-turn actua-tors SGEx a thermal overload relaymay be required to meet nationaldirectives.

Labour intensive installation andelectric wiring can be considerablyreduced if the integral actuator con-trols AUMA MATIC are appliedinstead of external controls. Limit ortorque seating can be programmedeasily in the AUMA MATIC via aDIP-switch.
