Test leads they are achangin’Standard committees at the IEC have been reviewing test leadsfor use with low voltage instruments. The changes to IEC61010-031 now requires that test probes for use in CAT III andCAT IV applications, must be designed so that no more than 4 mm of un-insulated probe tip is exposed. That means nomore tip caps to get lost as the tip must be moulded. Thechanges to the Standard also require croc clips to change too.The clip, when closed and not connected, has to pass the“standard finger test”, ensuring that potentially livemetalwork in the clip cannot be touched by the user.

Don't chance your armDoes your meter have a CAT II rating like so many that you can buy?

Yes, then you could be taking a serious chance. The basic designof meters has a major effect on its safety performance.

The CAT rating is not a measure of how well the tester protectsyou from the errors you make; it’s a measure of how well yourmeter protects you from those surges and spikes that occur onthe supply line. Things like lightning strikes and switchingtransients can result in spikes of thousands of volts and hugeamounts of energy.

To protect life and limb the IEC developed the system of safetycategories, related to the design of your tester, and thelocations in which you work.

However as far as CAT ratings go CAT III is better than CAT II.The higher the better and that’s why the majority of testers inthis catalogue are CAT IV.

17th Edition is beingamendedIt doesn’t seem that long since the 17th Edition was published,but the first amendment of 17th edition of the wiringregulations is to be released on 1st July for implementation on1st January 2012. This is always an important occasion becausethe omissions from the major work of producing a completenew edition get inserted following their detailed consideration.

New sections that are to be included are EMC compliance (444),devices for protection for overvoltage (534) also know as surgeprotection and medical testing (710). The section on test andmeasurement will see little change, and they won’t affect yourtesters. What will change is reporting. The Periodic InspectionReports will change to be called Schedule of Inspections andwill be significantly more detailed requiring a correspondingincrease in effort to complete.

The question is who will pay for the extra work?

In a scene reminiscent of a James Bondmovie, an aluminium flight case recentlycame flying from the window of a speedingvan on the M69 motorway. The casecontained the latest in electrical testingtechnology, in the form of a Megger MTK320electrical contractors’ test kit that had beenstolen from a vehicle belonging to a leadingelectrical training provider.

Despite a rough landing at speeds close to 70 mph, the three testers that make up thekit survived their ordeal completelyunscathed. A thorough check in the Meggercalibration laboratory showed that none ofthe instruments needed even the slightest ofadjustments.

Use the ‘ramp test’ to identifynuisance tripping RCDs.

An overly current sensitive orfaulty RCD can cause nuisancetripping of the RCD, which canbe very difficult to locate. Acurrent clamp meter is not fastenough. By testing with aramp test, the test current isslowly increased until the RCDtrips. The tester displays thetrip current in milliamps (notthe trip time). If this is toolow, replace the RCD.

Portable Appliance TestersPAT300 seriesA choice of two PAT testers which offer the operator manualand automatic operation without the complexity of datastorage. The PAT300 series allows the user to select a range oftests, such as those for a class I asset, simply by pressing the“class I“ button, and then initiate the test by pressing the testbutton. The TPT210 is a 2-pole tester which indicates the presence ofvoltage with an array of LEDs, while the TPT220 uses an LCDdisplay. Both offer additional functions such as voltage display,phase rotation determination without the need to cross probes,continuity and RCD trip test.

Safety is paramount with these testers, so they are rated at CAT IV 1000 V, are supplied with GS38 shrouds and the toughbody is rated to IP65. It goes almost without saying that theycontinue to indicate live systems even when the battery isremoved.

Electrical work on commercial and industrial installations oftenrequires working on motorised machinery with three phasesupplies. Correct sequence of the phases is important withcertain motors and pumps as damage to brakes and valves willoccur in minutes with incorrect phasing.

The Megger PSI410 phase rotation indicator provides rapidindication of correct phase sequence utilising a three bi-coloured LED display and a specific audible tone. Clockwiserotation is indicated by clockwise rotating green LEDs with acontinuous tone and counter clockwise rotation has counterclockwise rotating red LEDs and a warbling tone.

The unit has been designed to provide a slow rotational speedof the display to allow easy recognition of the direction ofrotation.

Dual phase colour coding has been adopted for the PSI410 toallow ease of use on both Brown / Black / Grey and Red / Yellow/ Blue colour coded supplies.

The PSI410 also features a triple bi-coloured LED display thatindicates that all three phases are present. A green LEDindicates the phase is present while a red LED shows a missingphase connection. The unit has a tough case designed for anindustrial environment and is supplied with long fused testleads with croc-clips and prods.

The PSI410 is self powered from the supply and requires nobatteries.

FRAX101 Sweep frequencyresponse analyser

■ Following an incident the quickest way to assess the condition of a transformer, beforereturning it to service, is to run a FRA test. The FRAX101 is the smallest, most ruggedinstrument and it offers the highest dynamic range and accuracy.

■ Measures turns ratio, excitation current and polarity of windings in single- and three-phasedistribution and power transformers (tested phase by phase), potential and currenttransformers, and tapped transformers. User can operate the test set one handed. Eliminatesthe need to bend down to operate the instrument and speeds up testing time. It is rugged,with a high impact, shock resistant case, yet very light at 870 g.

■ Hand held, compact cable fault locator for locating faults on metallic cables. Minimumresolution of 0.1 m and a 3 km maximum range depending on velocity factor selected andcable type. 20 km version also available. Four output impedance are available (25 Ω, 50 Ω, 75 Ω and 100 Ω), and a velocity factor between 0.30 and 0.99 will meet any cable testrequirements.

■ On-site power quality analysis and data retrieval without a computer. Intelligent downloadand real time graphical trending of Harmonics, THD and TDD. It now has a faster digital signalprocessor (DSP), 12 MB of internal, non-volatile memory, and incorporated auxiliary powerinput capabilities. Includes Metrosoft® software and remote communications.

■ Tests for earths and bonding in telecommunications towers, rail, aircraft, anything bimetal,switchgear (including lv switchgear), breakers, etc. Automatically detects continuity inpotential and current connections. Gives accurate results in under three seconds, with autocurrent reversal. Fuse protected to 600 V. NiMH battery reduces weight. Fully automatic. Selectthe most suitable test current, up to 10 A dc to measure resistance from 0.1 µΩ to 2000 Ω onone of seven ranges.

■ Batteries are becoming an increasingly important part of modern life with their use in standbypower and maintained supply units. Megger has added to its BITE range of battery impedancetesters with the Programma Torkel range of battery load units which allow the batteries to betested in service, by adjusting to include the load current in the test parameters.

■ Tests insulation resistance up to 5 TΩ. MIT510/2 is easy to operate and very tough. It canperform automatic IR tests. The built-in timer and high test ranges allow simple and quickevaluation of the condition of the insulation under test. Now upgraded to CATIV 600 V, givingyou even better operator safety.

■ MPRT tester and AVTS® software from Megger raises the standard for the automatic testingand management of protective relay systems. MPRT offers traditional manual and semiautomatic testing of the relay system whilst the AVTS package offers fully automatic testing aswell as relay maintenance schedule management.
