Electricity for Healthin the 21st Century

U nable to sleep on a hot, muggy summer night, Iswitched on the television. A movie, Mary ShelleysFrankenstein, had started. Professor Waldman wasa medical scholar that had been censured for his rebellious

wayshe had diverged from accepted academic research.

Played by John Cleese,his face loomed on thescreen as he explained toVictor Frankenstein, amedical student, playedby Kenneth Branagh:

For thousands of yearsthe Chinese have basedtheir medical science onthe belief that the humanbody is a chemicalengine run by energystreams. He went on toexplain how they insert: needles like these into the esh at various key pointsto manipulate these electric streams. Te enrapturedFrankenstein marveled, I see, so electricity is the key.

For centuries, the Chinese have known about and worked

with the bodys electrical nature from an intuitive basis. What, I wondered, has modern science discovered aboutthe ow of electricity in the body? What evidence is therefor an invisible river of electrons that provides life andhealth?

The Electrical and Electromagnetic Nature of the Body

What drives life is a little electrical current,kept up by the sunshine. All the complexities of

intermediary metabolism are but thelacework around this basic fact.

D espite the fact it is a ght for scientists to gainrecognition and acceptance for their workin proving the electrical nature of the body,numerous patents have been led, papers published, books

written, and web pages developed to explain the subject.

Te research of the following scientists stood out for me.Each breaks new ground in better understanding how ourbodies work to keep us alive and well.

Jacques Benveniste, M.D., a French scientist states: Lifedepends on signals exchanged among molecules.1 Tesesignals travel at speeds beyond our comprehension. AsBenveniste points out, established medicine is based onthe theory that molecules communicate only when a key

molecule nds the right keyhole molecule. A key mustbe put in the right keyhole in the same way we unlock adoor. Finding the right keyhole allows the molecule to passalong information or, in other words, create a chemicalreaction. He had been a scientist for many years before herealized the absurdity of this theoryit suggests a randomand cumbersome process that would be far too slow toaccount for the lightning speed of reactions in the body.Benvenistes research is based on the fact that moleculesvibratea fact known for decades. Tese vibrations arethe tools of the tradethe communication system by

which biological functions are controlled. Te vibrations

are electromagnetic frequencies that send signals. Wateris one medium in the body through which high-speedtransmission of messages between molecules is possible.We can now understand, says Benveniste, how millionsof biological molecules can communicate at the speed oflight. Identifying the specic electromagnetic frequency

for different molecules allows modern science to diagnoseand heal using those electromagnetic frequencies. Adiscovery that, to this day, is largely ignored by establishedmedicine.

and electric currents produce electromagnetic elds. Asa result, the terms electricity, electrical current andelectromagnetic are often used interchangeably.

Another leading scientist, Robert O.Becker, M.D., broke new ground withhis research in healing using electricity.He started by proving the electricalnature of the nervous system and thebrain. In Te Body Electric , he states:

Our work on nerves and the brain wasleading toward a whole new concept oflife whose implications only graduallybecame apparent.2 Ten came his discovery that bonehealing and growth were set in motion by a tiny chargeof electricity. Becker found electricity best described all

life functions. Electricity is commonly conducted withthe use of crystal structures. Crystal structures are a keyto understanding the electrical nature of cells. Beckerexplained, Te electron microscope has shown uscrystallike structures of previously unsuspected complexityin all living cells, 3 In addition, he described anothersystem hidden within the biological structures of the bodyfor electrical transmission. Te sheaths surrounding thenerves themselves are not merely insulation as describedin established biology. Tey function as wires to conductelectricity that reaches into each area of the body tocreate a normal electrical environment around each cell, ora stimulatory one when healing growth is needed. Beckerhad cleared the way for the Body Electric as a newparadigm in medicine when he stated, those embarrassinglittle oddities that the chemical-mechanistic theory couldnot explain are beginning to be understood

Benveniste, Becker and other pioneers that have helped usto better understand howthe human body functionsand, more importantly,how to better help it heal.Franz Morrell, M.D.,a German researcher,inventor and author, alsoproposed an electromagneticsystem to explain how thebody can transmit largeamounts of informationextremely fast. How muchinformation? Morrell states:In a single cell the amountof information beingtransmitted per second isso great that it would takea hundred years to read if it

were printed.4

Science & Vie , a Frenchmagazine reported more evidence for the electrical riverin our bodies. ranslated the article states: White cells(leukocytes) kill bacteria and pathogenic fungus byelectrocuting them.5 White blood cells are a key immunesystem component. Tis discovery gained further attention

when a letter, sent by the research team, was published inNature , a UK science journal.6

Te next researcher that stood out reminded me of whatI was taught in high school sciencethat the exchangeof sodium and potassium across the cell membranecreates a pump that is an essential function to sustainlife. A physicist in Greece, Panos Pappas, Ph.D. reminds

us what we arenot taught. Pappas explains that thepump hypothesis is not complete as it does not explainhow the amount of sodium differs from the amount ofpotassium being exchanged. What, then, is the missingingredient? Te missing ingredient is electricity! Te rapidsget rougher here as mainstream science does not accepttransmutationone element being changed or transmutedinto another. Both a French and a Japanese scientist, LouisKervran and George Ohsawa, proved that sodium can betransmuted into potassium with the addition of oxygenand electrical energy.7

When describing the transmutation process, tracking howthe body uses electricity,and how the body works tomaintain a balance between

sodium, potassium andother chemical reactions inthe body, Pappas exclaimed,Tis makes understandablethe wisdom of positioningthe adrenal glands on thetop of the kidneys.8 It isntnecessary to understand thedetails of the reactions to

appreciate his realizationthat our Creator knew how tobest design our bodies.

Lets pause to review why electricity is a key to how the

body functions. Communication within is instantaneous.Electromagnetic signals are the only way to account for theastounding speed and number of transactions our bodymust conduct simultaneously. Our bodies are composedof the elements that readily conduct electricity: water,crystal structures and nerves. Research is proving that our

immune system depends on electricity to zap pathogens. And, electricity explains how the body balances chemicalreactions such as the crucial exchange between sodium andpotassium.

Daniel L. Kirsch, Ph.D. and Fred N. Lerner, Ph.D., sumup for us: Atoms are bonded electrically. Further in ourrudimentary training we learned that there are voltagepotentials across the membrane of all cells. Tey do not,however, speculate on the staggering signicance of these

facts.9

The Body Uses Light and Sound

The saying is, as above so below. We have

light and sound here because they already existin the higher planes. These are veryimportant aspects of God,

the Light and Sound.Harold Klemp

M any religions agreethere is a life force thatsustains us. Its called the Holy Spirit, Prana,the Qi or Chi, the ECK, the Force, and othernames. Scriptures describe this forming-power as Lightand Sound. Like many others, I enjoy the inspiration,

upliftment and love that comes from experiencingthis Light and Sound inwardly using contemplativetechniques.10 How does this Light and Sound manifestphysically?

Lets start with Heinrich Hertz, a physicist, who discoveredthe photoelectric effect in the 1890s. Tis effect meansthat light interacts with matter to create electricitywhenlight strikes a substance, electrons are discharged. Later,renowned scientist Albert Einstein, proposed that wereceive light as photons. Te photon is both a particle anda wave that travels at the speed of light.

We absorb photons directly from sunlight and also fromplants depending on their health or nutrient content.Photons from the sun are absorbed not only through theeyes but also through the skin. Research conrms theexistence and importance of the acupuncture points andmeridians for conducting light to the body. And the

acupuncture pointsand meridians havealso been proven tobe more electricallyconductive thansurrounding tissue.2, 11

I was excited to learnthat light produceselectrical currents in

the body. I found iteven more intriguingto discover that thereverse is also trueour electrical energyassists our cells to generate photons. Our bodies emit light.

Biophotons is the term used to describe light emitted bythe body. It is our DNA that absorbs, stores and thenre-emits lightit is the bodys electrical transformer. Itis the blueprint found in every cell that makes each of us

unique. It stores theinformation neededto generate new cellsthat form our liver,our heart, or anypart of the body weuse.12

Fritz Popp,

Ph.D., a Germanresearcher, led the way in biologicalphoton research.He described aphoton as a process

rather than a particle. It is an electromagnetic eld thatcan be measured. His measurements illuminate how themillions of reactions within a cell each second can only beexplained by the speed of lightneither thermal radiationnor chemical reactions can explain the speed it takes forthe work our cells do. Photons are the real regulators ofour biological systems, he says.13 One photon can triggerone million reactions in one second and the reaction rateincreases with the number of photons available.

Healthy cells glow with the dance of biophotons.Biophotons, explains Popp, substitute for the sun duringthe hours when were not exposed to itthey can deliveran equivalent intensity! As one researcher states: Weare in a very literal sense light beings as ancient mysticalteachings profess.11

What about the bodys use of sound? I thought.Remember the universe was created by sound. Veryshortly the scientists will be saying this, Richard Gerber,M.D. reminded us in 1988 with the publication ofVibrational Medicine .14 Sound absorbed through the ear orthe skin also produces electricity. We think of sound and

light as separate phenomena but theyre simply the sameelectromagnetic energydetectable at different frequenciesand wavelengths. Light in frequencies above, below and

within the visual spectrum is both absorbed and emittedby the body. So too is sound both absorbed and emittedfrom above, below, and within the audible range. Small

Tats how one researcherdescribed the DNA in a cell. Te BBC News onlineposted an article describing how a musician and a biologist

worked together to convert the electromagnetic DNAvibrations to audible sound. Tey discovered the sound ofDNA makes beautiful music.16

Just as we emit light, we emit soundto varying degreesdepending on our health. If you apply the discipline andpractices of the Qigong masters in China you have a highlevel of sound at your command. Energy elds of coloured light emanating from the physical

body were rst made visible by a Russian couple, Semyonand Valentina Kirlian, in 1939. While repairing hospitalequipment Semyon noticed electromagnetic vibrationscaught imprints of human energy on lm. Working withhis wife, Kirlian further developed the technique to capturethe energy elds. Te technique became known as Kirlian

Photography.19

In 1996, Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, anotherRussian researcher who had met Semyon Kirlian in hislater years, developed a more advanced systema camera

with computer softwareto visually present this energy or,informational eld as he calls it, for diagnostic purposes.

In addition, Dr. Korotkov used his system to measure theenergy elds of champion athletes, individuals involvedin creative pursuits, and those with a spiritual calling. Hediscovered they displayed a more highly balanced energyeld than usual. He concluded, So this electrical process isnot only health, it is not only well being, it is creativity, itis attitude to the world.20

Wolfgang Ludwig, a contemporary researcher in Germany,compares the energy eld of the body to the seeminglysolid physical body: We have one billion more electronicparticles than mass particles. Our body consists of a lot ofbiophotons and electromagnetic signals but only a very,very small part of material particles.21

Te disease process starts when damaging frequencies orvibrations are stored in cells. Tese damaging waves maybuild up unnoticed for years as chemical changes do notappear until later. Bacteria, viruses and other pathogens

take hold and the disease process gradually becomes visible.It took me many years to recognize that my unhealthylifestylepoor diet and lack of exercise, emotional andmental stress, and exposure to environmental pollutants

were aging my body faster than necessary. I now realizethis lifestyle was creating damaging frequencies that can bedetected long before physical symptoms erupt.

Jimmy Scott, Ph.D., founder of a system called HealthKinesiology, helps dene Energy Medicine. We use

energy in our English language in a lot of different ways. Te energy I am talking about the best word for itis bioenergetic the ow and function of energy withinus and between us and the environment. He continues, Isee the bioenergy in the body as being the blueprint for thephysical body.

In addition to use as an early warning system, JimmyScott points out that therapies can also be applied atthe subtle energy level for profound effects physically,emotionally and mentally. He explains, We can deal withphobias usually in a few minutes. But the academics arenot interested in that they wont even look at the new

techniques because they dont understand what energy isall about.22

In Energy Medicine , Donna Eden describes how she works with seemingly empty space to help relieve suffering.She has worked on individuals with phantom limb painafter an appendage has been cut off. Tis pain is very realdespite the fact a physical leg, arm or nger is missing.

A war veteran whose foot and leg had been shot off wasexperiencing such excruciating pain in the missing limbhe was losing his will to live. Eden started working onthe space where his foot had beenmassaging the subtle

Langreder, anotherGerman researcher cautioned us, Tey [drugs] act in thebody by suppressing damaging waves from a sick organ Langreder further warned, A chain of complaintsfollows which neither the patient nor the doctor connects

with the earlier allopathic [drug] therapythe seemingly

In other words, damaging waves arecreated by the bodys electrical response to stresses. Tesedamaging waves are stored and build up until a physicalsymptom or illness erupts. If a drug suppresses thesedamaging waves rather than release them by stimulatingthe body to heal itself, we start a chain reaction thateventually leads to more severe symptoms and illness.

Langreder also reminds us that the damaging waves moverst to the jawbones which steer them on to the teeth.

Several state-of-the-art computerized devices are now available thatboth detect damaging waves on an energy level and applyappropriate energetic treatments to help restore balance.25

Energy medicine recognizes an early-warning system fordisease. If imbalances in the vibrations of our energy eldare corrected soon enough, we can restore health ratherthan experience disease.

History of Electro-Medicine

By 1884 it was estimated that 10 000 physicians

in the USA were using electricity every day for therapeutic purposes James L. Oschman

History came alive for me when I read thatelectric sh were the earliest recorded form ofelectro-medicine. I wondered how many people

over the ages had rejuvenated themselves accidentallyand then deliberately by a run in with an electric eel.Im sure such encounters could have been fatal as well.Te ancient Roman physician, Scribonius Largus, in 46

AD, cured headache and gout by having patients standon a wet electric torpedo sh.26 Dr. Norman Shealy, thedeveloper of ranscutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation( ENS) explains, Intermittently the electric sh wasused for a variety of illnesses until about 1745 whenarticial electricity began to replace the less controlled

natural source.27 By the 19th century electricity wasused extensively in health spas and as part of medicaltreatments.

Te use of electricity for health continued to thrive intothe 20th century. I enjoy a dose of electricity as a resultof this era every time I visit a store on Main Street inDisneyland. wo free-standing devices from earlier in thecentury attract me with the headlines: ElectricityTeSilent Physician and Electricity is Life.

Researcher, Georges Lakhovsky, actually had hospitalcooperation in the eastern United States for his work

with electricity in the early part of the 20th century. Hepublished a book, Te Secret of Life , in 1935 to describethe variety of disease conditions that were cleared inhumans, animals and plants with his Multiple WaveOscillator. Lakhovsky also concluded the nature of the cellis electrical. Te cell or the essential organic unit in allliving beings, he said, is nothing but an electromagneticresonator, capable of emitting and absorbing radiationsof very high frequency.28 As medical and pharmaceuticaldominance of the health care system closed in, his research

ended.Many years later, Robert C. Beck, D.Sc., a distinguishedphysicist, brought Lakhovksys Multiple Wave Oscillatorto public attention. His design became known amongthose who continued to research electricity for health asthe Beck antenna. In a paper published in 1963, Beckreported: Within this multiple-wave range of frequencies,every cell in the body can nd its ONE resonant frequencyand absorb energy at its own natural wavelength.29

Independent of Lakhovksy, Royal Raymond Rife, was

having phenomenal success in the western U.S.clearingcancer in California with a bio-electric device. Barry Lynessummarizes his story for us inTe Healing of Cancer : Inassociation with the University of Southern California, anumber of clinics used Rifes technology to cure terminalcancer during the period 19341938. Some of the leadingresearchers in the country and leading physicians inSouthern California participated.30 On May 6, 1938 theEvening ribunein San Diego featured an article by Newell

Jones titled, Dread Disease Germs Destroyed by Ray,Claim of S.D. Scientist. Despite a sub-title that heraldeda new era: Cancer Blow Seen After 18-Year oil by Rifethe research came to a sudden end.31 Lynes continues, In1938, the AMA [American Medical Association] foundout about the Rife cancer cure the entire program wasdestroyed within six months. Rife was hauled into courtand the treatment was effectively quashed.

What gave the AMA such power? Why did research withelectrical health devices have to go underground? In theU.S. up to the 1920s,medical training

was available froma variety of schoolsoffering differingspecialties includingthe use of electricity.Under the guise ofprotecting the public,the Flexner Reportprepared by AbrahamFlexner of theRockefeller Institute,

was commissioned.32

Tis report recommended commercial medical schools beclosed and that university medical schools adopt a standardcurriculum. Te Flexner Report was nanced by the samepeople who were investing in the edgling pharmaceuticalindustry. It is not surprising, then, that the standardizedcurriculum did not include electro-medicine. Dominanceof the surgical and pharmaceutical approach to health wassoon established.33

Despite peer censure, leading scientists have continued

to pursue electricity for health throughout the twentiethcentury. Bjrn Nordenstrm, a medical doctor in Sweden was among them. He used electricity for cancer patients.He gained a prestigious reputation as a former Chairmanof the Nobel Assembly and the inventor of the needlebiopsy. In 1983 he published a book titledBiological ClosedElectric Circuit Clinical, Experimental, and Teoretical Evidence for an Additional Circulatory System.He discovered, allliving systems contain numerous functioning electricalcircuits. Tese circuits exist in all bodily functions and determine the well being of the body.

considered the leaders in electro-medical research.34 Tesputnik, an electronic pill that activates in the stomachis reported to have been the secret to keeping aging andailing former Soviet leaders alive.35 Information on theInternet states: Te capsule is part of a whole program ofnatural drugless treatment developed in Russia. gives

He did, however, nd thatthe free-range eggs transmitted more light.13 Tis meansthey provide a greater benet to the body electrically.Ultimately, then, the free-range eggs provide morechemical nourishment for the body as well.

Reporting on Dr. Patrick Flanagans research in owardsa New Alchemy , Nick Begich tells how ingesting rawamino acids, the building blocks for protein, boosted theenergy or electrical readings of the acupuncture pointsdramatically.37 Other foods that boost the energy ow

are fresh vegetables and fruitespecially organicallygrown. Raw foods are superior to cooked because of theirphoton energy. Tis has also been proven with Kirlianphotography, another method to measure light emission.38

Te late German researcher Hans Nieper, M.D., when working with Multiple Sclerosis patients found foods rich

in beta-carotene helped relieve symptoms. He noticed,however, that beta-carotene supplements were not aseffective as the raw foods. Not all electricity, of course, is benecial. Considerableevidence exists demonstrating that power lines,transformers and appliancestransmitting or using highvoltage, 50 or 60 cycles per second, alternating current

effective for osteoarthritis It eases symptoms of maculardegeneration, cancer, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, andParkinsons diseaseconditions for which sufferers would

welcome any new option.43

While research using electromagnetic, frequency, andmicrocurrent therapies is still limited because of thehigh cost of research as well as limited acceptance by themedical community, it has gained ground compared tothe fate of at least two earlier researchers. I talked withDr. Benjamin Lau in 1999, a medical researcher at LomaLinde University. He said that his research on sportsinjuries in the 1980s using a Pulsed Magnetic Field device

was getting promising results. He could not, however, getfunding to continue the research.44 Tat was the fate ofDr. Robert O. Beckers research as well. He reported inTeBody Electric , Te lab ceased to exist on New Years Day1981.2

An independent researcher, Dr. Hulda Clark, Ph.D., N.D.,operated a clinic in Mexico before her passing in 2009.She wrote several books to make her clinical ndingsknown directly to the public. Clark identied chemicalsas hidden pollutants in processed foods, personal care andhousehold products. Tese chemicals encourage the growth

So zapping is still not perfect,but can bring such manifestrelief that everyone should buyor make one.45

Te late Robert (Bob) C. Beck,D.Sc. was also an independentresearcher who funded hisown projectsmany related tohealth. He proved his genius

while still in college with his

invention of the ash bulb. Among his achievements as aphysicist, were a magnetometer, a miniaturized SQUID(Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) thatmeasured extremely low-level electromagnetic radiationand a handheld EEG (electroencephalogram) device tomeasure brain waves. As a result of his brain research,he developed the Brain uner, a CES (cranial electrostimulation) unit.

Beck was respected by many of his peers. One colleague was reported to have said he should have been on thecover of ime magazine as the Peoples Scientist. Bob wasknown to champion the public cause. He felt we should be

informed about emerging and often secret technologiesboth harmful and benecial.46

Beck was among a group of maverick scientists thatare members of the US Psychotronics Associationanorganization formed to bridge the esoteric and scientic

worlds. Dr. Elizabeth Rauscher, a brilliant scientist andmember of this group, revealed there are a considerablenumber of well-qualied researchers who are part of thissub-culture. Tey meet to share, question, and explore

what conventional science does not yet understand oraccept.47

One of the avenues of research that caught Becks attention was that of Steven Kaali, M.D. and William Lyman, Ph.D.at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. In

1993, they led U.S. Patent Number 5,188,738 givingdetails of their research. In their laboratory, gentle levels ofelectricity proved to render the bacteria, virus, parasitesand/or fungus ineffective to infect or affect the normallyhealthy cells while maintaining the biological usefulness ofthe blood or other uids.48 On a CBC radio broadcast in

Canada, Dr. Lyman explained the level of electric current was considered safe as it was about the same as pacemakersthat have been used safely for many years.49

After discovering thispatent, Beck applied hisinventive genius to develop

a non-invasive way to pulsemicrocurrents into the blood.Using his knowledge as aphysicist, he designed a unitto overcome the naturalresistance of the skin; to

produce enough voltageto create the necessarymicrocurrents in the blood;to ensure there would not beundue heat; and to ensure the blood would not be ionized.Te microcurrent unit places two electrodes over the

He brought the benets of what came to be known as theBeck Protocol, directly to public attention by speakingat Natural Health Shows in the U.S. Beck, however, didnot sell his units. Instead, for a small fee to cover printingcosts, he provided a handout describing how to build theunits. For those who are not technically procient, he

recommended purchasing units from SO A InstrumentsInc.51

In addition to the application of microcurrents and pulsedmagnetic elds, Beck advocated the benets of ioniccolloidal silver and drinking freshly ozonated water forhealth. With the help of SO A, his four-steps for healthbecame known as Te Beck Protocol. Preliminaryresearch and a wealth of testimonials provide evidence forthe effectiveness of the Beck Protocol.52

During an interview in 1998 about his life and work, Becksummed up by saying, Well, God has left a back door that

cures and that back door seems to be electricity.53

While I love Bobs comment, I dont want to misleadanyone with the word cure. Tis word, used withinthe Medical Model for health, gives credit to somethingoutside the body that is perceived to end the diseaseprocess. Within the Natural Health Model it is understood

that the bodys natural ability to heal itself can bestimulatedsuch as with bio-electric therapies. Whetherour bodies are working to heal us or not, however, dependson how we treat them over time.
