Background
11/10/2017
▪ Total Number of Households
(2016): 7,751,000
▪ Rural Population (2014): 79%
▪ Number of Domestic Grid
Connections (2016): 936,000
▪ Household Grid Connection Rate:
(2016): 12,1%

Electricity Consumption per Capita
11/10/2017
▪ Uganda (2016): 71 kWh/Capita
Source: Nasa Visible Earth
▪ Germany (2014): 7,035 kWh/Capita
▪ EU (2014): 5,909 kWh/Capita
▪ World (2014): 3,128 kWh/Capita

Solar Containers for rural communities
11/10/2017
▪ Electrification using solar powered Mini-Grids in rural areas is often faster
and cheaper than extending the National Grid to every corner of the country

Goal
11/10/2017
▪ Developing a GIS based decision support Model to decide whether it is
more economical to electrify a village using Solar Home Systems, Mini-
Grid or On-Grid Solutions

Input data and Assumptions
11/10/2017
▪ Average demand of domestic / community / productive
customers
▪ Capacity of the transformers
▪ Expected electricity reliability at the customer: 80% to 90%
▪ National Grid reliability: 95%, 90%, 85% (base case scenario)
▪ Grid extension costs < 2000 USD/customer

Conclusion
11/10/2017
▪ The GIS model proves that it is often cheaper to connect
villages to a Minigrid than to the National Grid
▪ The model helps to decide which areas are most suitable for
electrification with Minigrids and for which areas it is more
economical to extend the National Grid
▪ The final result depends largely on the parameters used e.g. the
price per km grid extension and the expected reliability of the
grid
