electrified memories of bloody cherries extended Landschaft von Musik
Piece commissioned by Sacrum Profanum Festival
I
Instrumentation Clarinet in Bb /Bass Clarinet in Bb (Cl in B, B.Cl.)
Elelctric Guitar (E.Gtr.) Violoncello (Vc.) Contrabass (Cb.) Piano (Pno.) Percussion
Vibraphone Anvil Metal Plate Metal Grill Tam-tam (medium) Wood Block Wood Box (large wooden box) Lion’s roar Tumba Kettle Drum (medium)
Remarks
General Remarks Instruments are amplified. Dynamics noted in the score is intentional and concerns effort of performance, not sounding result. LH left hand RH right hand sim. simile
fluent change
regular fast tremolo
regular very fast tremolo
irregular tremolo
II
Clarinet
inhale
some very high sound (no exact pitch)
smorzato
exhale
pitch bend (somewhat down, or to exact pitch)
let air go out of corners of the mouth – more air – while palying (sign above note)
ordinary sound
air sounds with mouthpiece
air sounds without mouthpiece
teeth-on-reed
key click
hand pop (without mouthspiece)
Example: Air sounds without mouthpiece
Example:
Eample: Combination of air sounds+key clicks
Example:
Rhytmic, regular vibrato (when needed with remark “slow”, “fast”,”medium”)
blow air along length of instrument. hold cl. Like the flute, mouth close to keys, air goes through keys
III
E-Guitar Scordatura:
ordunary sound popping sound, push string
against pick up without touching pick up with finger
some very high sound, Approximate pitch
scratch/tap with coin
scratch along string with nail on the bridge
dampen the sound
tap string with finger
coin
coin position, coin placed between strings
slide sponge
brush
SP sul ponticello ST sul tasto MSP molto sul ponticello MST molto sul tasto amplifier, amp. leave noise of amplifier pluck pluck strings with plectrum or finger rub rub strings with coin, sponge, brush etc.
(white-square notehead) indicates position of rubbing and is accompanied by shape of motion
IV
Cello, Contrabass Scordatura:
Type of bow pressure:
large bow pressure medium bow pressure
light bow pressure
ORD, O ordinario SP sul ponticello MSP molto sul ponticello ST sul tasto MST molto sul tasto
Type/shape of bowing:
bow up “eight motion” (combination of motion up/down/across strings)
bow down bowing along strings: keep bow in one orizontal position and move it up/down (the best horizontal position is the one close to frog)
“circle motion” in right/left direction (combination of motion up/down/across strings) Example:
Example:
Bowing along strings is noted with white-triangle noteheads (direction up/down)
Size of motion/gesture, length of bowing: SM, SB small motion, short bow MM, MB medium motion, medium bow LM, LB large motion, long bow The size of bow-motion corresponds to “length” of bowing. When needed this parameter is noted in the score f.e.: “play with short bow” (SB) - for circle means “make a little circle” using little part of bow and short motion, “play with long bow” (LB) for eigth means “make large eight” etc.
V
Example:
Parts of bow When needed, there is noted in score which part of the bow should be used while playing: upper part of bow (close to tip) middle part of bow lower part of bow (close to frog)
Example:
Each single bowing (up, down, circle, eight, along) corresponds to one rhythmic value (bow signed above note). Type of shortening strings (left hand): ordinary shortening Press string down at fingerboard,
Example:
ordinary notehead
above fingerboard To produce very high sounds, approximate pitch. Press string down above fingerboard.
Example:
black triangle notehead
“pull-up shortening” To produce dull sounds, approximate-pitch. Pull up string (do not press) - tighten string up with fingers.
Example:
bracket notehead
VI
Special keys:
tailpiece
Example: Bounce a bow off tailpiece (rebound).
between tailpiece and bridge
Example: Bow up the string C. Direction from tailpiece to bridge. Increase bow-pressure.
aside bridge
top of bridge
W wood, Abbreviation placed above note. Concerns sounds produced on bridge. Try to produce more noise of wood, then string sound (bow as much as possible avoiding contact with strings)
Bow on the top of bridge. Square-notehead indicates which string on the top of bridge has to be bowed (even though you always bow string and wood aside, try to get string sound. When dyad, bowing will produce more wooden sound (bow has more contact with wood between strings.
strings just behind bridge (sul ponticello)
rhythmic value key
Upper line - rhythm of bowing, Lower line – rhythm (and type) of fingering
VII
Tapping Tap strings with palm (LH, open hand – “hand-barre”) in given approximate position to reach loud percussive sound attack. Do not allow that strings resonate when you release the strings
Example:
Tap very loudly the strings with open hand.
If there is string resonance after tapping, it is noted with a tie after notehead.
Example:
Tap strings with palm in given approximate position, then hold hand at the same position.
Example:
Tap strings with left hand. Palm remains in the tapping position while left hand performs different tasks: rebound on tailpiece, then bowing.
Tap different parts of cello/contrabass with coin.
coin
coin position, coin placed between strings
Tap with coin the strings (RH) – direction from sul ponticello to sul tasto. Simultaneously make glissando (LH)
Glissando Ordinary glissando (ordinary shorten the string) Pull-up fingering glissando Half-pressure glissando – noisy sound
Pizzicato pizzicato, pizz. ordinary pizzicato
When sign is placed above chord, it means quasi-Bartok pizzicato. To produce – simultaneously pull up indicated strings (the best of in ½ length of fingerboard), then release them. Strings hit the fingerboard. This double/triple pizzicato is usually produced on empty strings and then immediately damped (that there is no empty strings resonance, but more percussive effect).
Bartok pizzicato
Example:
VIII
Damping
, dampen the strings with hand. Sign placed above/below note. When dampen concerns a particular pitch/sound/action, the sign is accompanied by cross-notehead.
Example:
Dampen the strings immediately after “quasi-Bartok pizzicato”. (soundlessly cover strings with hand - soundless “hand barre”).
When dampen does not concern particular pitch or soud, there is no notehead, just sign.
Example:
Play glissando to the highest sound (shortened above fingerboard), then dampen all the strings with hand (soundless “hand barre”).
To achieve the best sound result in all the bowing-techniques, it is recommended to use more rosin then ordinary.
Piano Strings damping: Five-line staff with G key signature and F-key signature indicates which keys are to be pressed.
play on keyboard (press keys), ordinary notehead. The staff above indicates position of damping. Lower line indicates absolute position for all pitches/all strings. It is always the beginning of string – the closest hand position (front pins) Upper line is relative. For the higest register it is always the end of string (until beck pins). For lower register it is the further arm position (dampen as far as the length of your arm allows you). As result the distance between lines is equal with the length of string or with the length of arm. The pressure of fingers which dampen the strings influences type of resonance, strong pressure – dull/percussive sound, light pressure – resonating sound (pitch is more audible). Degrees of finger/hand pressure:
large pressure medium pressure
light pressure
Example:
press keys with left hand, and precisely dampen the strings with right one.
IX
Rub/Hit the strings Five-line staff with G key signature and F-key signature indicates which keys are to be rubbed/hit.
rub/hit indicated string
Example:
rub/hit indicated range of strings
Example:
When there is glissando from one pitch (string) to other it means – rub across strings.
Example:
In this example it will be diagonal motion: across+up
The staff above indicated position of rubbing on the strings (see “string damping”). Tools:
brush
wooden piece/board, vertical position (rub with short edge)
wooden piece/board, horizontal position (rub with long edge)
rub with glockenspiel mallet (metal head)
metal plate (if possible with handle) Hit on the frame
rubber hammer
X
Number as notehead indicates which part of the frame should be beaten with rubber hammer. Each number is assigned to different part of frame inside piano: 1 short frame 2 medium frame (darker timbre) 3 large frame (dark timbre) Choose those parts of frame with the most different timbre characteristics.
Percussion
metal brush
rubber hammer
hand
superball mallet
soft beater
glockenspiel mallet
mallet drum stick
metal stick
cello or contrabass bow
mute hit/beat/stroke
