What is an Electric Vehicle (EV)?

EVs are the next evolution of the auto industry. All EVs contain an electric motor and rechargeable battery pack that can be used to power any form of transportation, including cars, trucks, buses, trains and even airplanes.

Most electricity in Canada comes from clean and renewable energy sources. Because EVs use electricity instead of fossil fuels, they have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation by as much as 95% depending on where you live.

For this reason, electrifying transportation is often considered an essential action in the fight against climate change.

It is not just about the environment though!

Electric motors are more efficient and durable than internal combustion engines. They deliver better torque and acceleration, are completely silent when running and are much cheaper to operate and maintain.

All of the above reasons point to one conclusion: EVs are better! EV drivers worldwide can attest that once you go electric, you never go back.

FEBRUARY 2020 EDITION

PLUG’N DRIVE THANKSOUR EV ROADSHOW SPONSOR

ONTARIO’S LARGESTCLEAN ENERGY PROVIDER

Clean, Low-cost Power. Made in Ontario.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) provides about half of the province’s electricity, at a cost that’s about 40 per cent less than other generators, helping to moderate overall electricity prices. Our energy is also more than 99 per cent free of smog and carbon emissions, which means cleaner air for us all.

Electric vehicles offer a great opportunity because charging EVs during off-peak hours, with clean Made-in-Ontario power, will lower electricity prices for all Ontarians by making more efficient use of existing infrastructure.

FULLY ELECTRIC

Fully electric cars are powered 100% by an electric motor and battery. Fully electric cars do not burn gasoline or diesel and have zero tailpipe emissions.

Plug-in Hybrids use electricity and gasoline. They travel 20-80 km (depending on model) on a full battery. Once the battery is empty, a gasoline engine or generator turns on for additional range.

ADVANTAGES

• Save you thousands of dollars per year on fuel and maintenance

• Significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution

• Can do everything gas cars can do. No more range anxiety!

• Have electric-only driving modes for day to day driving

GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES

On May 1, 2019, the Canadian federal government launched an incentive of up to

$5,000off the purchase of a fully electric or plug-in

hybrid electric car.

Some Canadian Provinces also offer provincial incentives for the purchase of fully electric or

plug-in hybrid electric cars and the installation of charging stations.

Government incentive programs change from time to time based on the available funding

and political priorities.

For the most up-to-date information on all EV incentive programs currently being offered in

Canada, visit:

All EVs come standard with a cord set that lets you charge by plugging into a standard wall socket. This is the slowest level of charging, but ensures that no matter where you are, you can always recharge.

ONE HOUR OF CHARGE ~

8 KM OF RANGE

This is the most common level of charging. Most EV drivers install a Level 2 station at home. Level 2 stations have similar electrical requirements to a clothes dryer or stove and any licensed electrician can install them.

LEVEL 3 CHARGING

Level 3 charging, commonly called DC Quick charging, will charge your battery from empty to 80% in 30-45 minutes. Level 3 stations are located along major highways and travel routes and are designed to enable long-distance travel.

CANADA HAS WELL OVER 6,000 PUBLIC CHARGING STATIONS AND

COUNTING

Ask any EV driver and they will say most of their charging takes place at home, but there are times when you need to use a public charging station.

Public charging stations are located all throughout Canada at malls, commercial buildings, restaurants and highway rest stops.

PLUG-IN HYBRIDELECTRIC VEHICLESAVAILABLE FOR SALE IN CANADA

The following pages contain cost to drive and greenhouse gas emissions data for all plug-in hybrid electric cars available for sale in Canada. This data is compared to gasoline car equivalents in the comparison chart on page 57-58. All data is calculated by Plug’n Drive using these resources, variables and assumptions:

• NRCan’s 2020 Fuel Consumption Ratings• Ontario’s off-peak electricity pricing and

generation mix• A gasoline cost of $1.20/Litre• An average annual driving distance of 20,000

km and a daily driving distance of 55 km• The first 55 km of each daily trip is assumed to

be electric up to a maximum of the EV model’s rated electric range with the remainder assumed to be gasoline. (For example, the Audi Q5 TFSI e has an electric range of 32 km. The first 32 km of every daily 55 km trip is assumed to be electric with the remaining 23 km assumed to be gasoline)
