Define • A method of exchanging electronic messages or files

Examples • School e-mail, google e-mail, e-mail on facebook

Advantages • Instant communication

• Geography doesn’t make a difference

• Semi-private Disadvantages

• People can forward and print your e-mail

• Message could taken the wrong way

• Cyberbullying

• A person may send message using another person’s e-mail address

Chat

Define: • Real online talking with a group of people.

Example: • Xbox Live; Yahoo messenger, MSN, many

games have chat options

Chat Advantages:

• Real time

• Geography doesn’t make a difference

• May chat with more than one person

• Many chats have a way to invite people into chat group Disadvantages:

• Cyberbullying

• Message could be taken the wrong way

• Potentially dangerous if chat is open to anyone

• May talk back and forth but not pass actual documents back and forth

Blogs:

Define: • On-line journal or diary.

Entries in reverse chronological order.

Example: • Kelo-land news blogs, political blog, blog on Facebook,

ESPN sports blog, many websites may have a blog link

Blogs: Advantages:

• Share your thought with others• Everyone can read• Allows user to reflect on material w/o having to give

immediate feedback• Reader may be able to leave comments back

Disadvantages: • Upkeep is time consuming• Material may be bias (people’s opinions)• Cultural differences• Validity of information posted

Discussion Board

Define: • Online discussion area focused on a specific topic with

one person having final control of what is posted.

Example: • Many website has discussion board area (Dr. Phil,

ESPN, etc.)

Discussion Board Advantages:

• Can be monitored and modified by owner

• Sharing of thought

• Talk with many people

• Invites collaboration

• Allows user to reflect on material w/o having to give immediate feedback

Disadvantages: • Material may be bias to persons view

• Anyone may post

• Validity of information posted

Wikis

Define: • A website that allows multiple users to add, change, or

modify content.

Example: • Wikipedia, Wikispace, there are many educational Wikis

Advantages: • Easy to set up

• Sharing of work/ideas

• Collaboration in work

• Sharing of files Disadvantages:

• Prone to vandalism

• Validity of post

• May not know who is posting to Wiki

PodCast/VideoCast

Define: • Audio broadcast (which may include video) available on

computer and other electronic devices Example:

• YouTube, iTunes, Zune, many educational podcast available

Advantages: • Geography doesn’t make a difference

• Stay on top of trend

• Easy to get a hold of

Disadvantages: • May be inappropriate

• No print to go with podcast

• Must be of value or people will not listen/watch

Define: • Websites that allow users to build an on-line profile and

share with other people.

Example: • MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter

Advantages:• Keep in touch with many people

• Geography doesn’t make a difference

• Immediate feedback

• You may talk to individuals or groups

• Variety of media (chat, e-mail, video cast, etc.) Disadvantages:

• People may forward what you have on the site

• Cyberbullying

• Put too much personal info on site
