The Truth – City of Liverpool College Arts Centre, G2 TheatreLighting operator/ Co-lighting designer
The Truth was a play devised by the HNC acting course and originally ran from 14/04/2014-15/05/2014. The piece was based around the Hillsborough tragedy 1989, and focuses mostly on the families and friends of the 96 who died because of that day, how it affected them at the time, and how it still affects them to this day. The piece was made up of a range of small scenes which featured different groups of characters. This made ideas for lighting much easier for me as I could distinguish each scene and what type of lighting would be required. There was a mixture of both realistic and abstract scenes, so my lighting had to adapt with them.I adored working on this show, as this is a subject which has affected members of my family and people I know, so I was eager to be involved. I asked my dad, an avid Liverpool supporter to come and see, and it really hit home for him. He even wrote a review about how impressed he was on his blog (http://the-end-fanzine.blogspot.co.uk/2014_05_01_archive.html).Due to high demand, we were able to do another two day run of the piece. This gave me a chance to slightly edit cues and makes it as good as it should be. The last run we did was perfect, and I was glad this it is something that I had contributed towards in some way.
A monologue is delivered on 'the boy' who had it coming.

This scene was based on the Officer who was forced to change her statement following the incident. I used cold side light in this scene, to show the nastier side of
what occurred.
This character had lost her son at Hillsborough and still cherishes his belongings. Was performed as an intertwining duologue with a father who had lost his daughter. I
decided to use warm floor light to highlight the emotion in their faces.
This is an integral chracter in the play, he symbolises all those who died at Hillsborough, and orchestrates the opening and closing of each Act. This is when he closed the first
Act. By looking left and right, two LFC flags were revealed. I used the single floor light on him to show his importance.
This was a movement scene accompanied by a sheet. The actors portray Trevor and Jenny Hicks, and the sequence shows how the tragedy began to deterorate their
marriage. This was accompanied by ‘The Power of Love’. This was my personal favourite scene in terms of lighting, as I used a cross wash with floor light which created a
reversed effect with the silhouettes which was very effective. The scene also began with plenty of colours (pink, purples, blues), but they were all gradully taken out and left the
couple in a stark, colourless state.

Dance Week– City of Liverpool College Arts Centre, G2 TheatreCo-lighting designer
09/12/2014-11/12/2014
Dance week is a chance for all dance classes to show their work off before they begin studying different genres and techniques. It included all levels of dance class, from the newest students to the HNC dance students who are studying at University level. Most groups seemed to do similar genres, and all had around 3 different dances each. Genres included; commercial, urban, African, jazz and contemporary. I volunteered to do lighting design alongside another one of my classmates, as I had not had a chance to work on dance before. It was a new experience to me, and it was very fast paced. I enjoyed this process as it was a learning curve for me, and I found it challenging. I was glad with the final results and would love to be able to design lights for a dance show again in future.

A Walk in The Dark – City of Liverpool College Arts Centre, G2 TheatreCo-lighting designer and Assistant Stage Manager
08/10/2014
A Walk in the Dark was an adaptation of The Passion of Darkly Noon written by Phillip Ridley. This production was produced and directed by Hollowtalk Theatre, who are made up by an acting tutor and previous acting student who have now collaborated to form their own theatre group. I wanted to be involved in this project as I did not have the chance to work with either of them the tear before due to being committed to various productions which clashed with theirs. The plot follows a young boy called Darkly, who is part of a religious cult who reside deep in the woods. After their village is attacked, Darkly runs away deep into the forest and is taken in by Maggie. He soon begins to develop feelings for her, and becomes jealous of her mute boyfriend Jacob.

The Matchbox is a play written by Irish playwright Frank McGuinness. Originally, the play consists of just one character; Sal. Although in this contemporary adaptation, there was 8 Sal’s portrayed by an all-female cast. The set for this piece was as if the audience where inside a house. As we did not have set designers I had to attempt to figure out what was possible to achieve. It was a long, difficult process, but I was really pleased with the final results.Sals daughter has been killed by gunfire as a result of gang warfare, and the piece revolves around how she has coped with the situation. We go on the emotional rollercoaster with Sal, from the moment her daughter was born, the moment she is told she has been shot, when she first sees her dead daughter, and gradual isolation as both of her parents die shortly after. Sal ultimately seeks revenge on those who took her daughter’s life, and throughout the piece we come to realise that she has taken matters into her own hands and has dealt with it herself. It is a truly harrowing piece that many have said hits home especially if you are a parent. This was one of my favourite productions to be a part of. It is amazing to see how much it progressed from its rehearsal stage, and to see how effective it looked once it was performed in its complex set.

Frankenstein – City of Liverpool College Arts Centre, G2 TheatreAssistant Stage Manager
23/06/2014 – 24/06/2014
This was a piece based on the novel written by Mary Shelley. It featured excerpts from the book, and also included devised scenes and dialogue. The class specialised in physical theatre, so there were many ensemble moments. The set also featured many different levels of rostra for the cast to perform and climb on. There was also prop makes which we had to help with for this piece. We had to make a mould of the monsters whole torso, including his arms and hands, which we made with multiple layers of mod-roc. I also was asked to either source or make a monkey hand. I did this using a latex glove and used fake hair. This was one of the last productions we worked on in our show season. It was a complex build, but it was a great cast. I think that we had all progressed in this show compared to how we started out, so it was definitely one of our best productions in terms of team work.

Jack – City of Liverpool College Arts Centre, G2 TheatreAssistant Stage Manager
24/04/2014 – 25/04/2014
Jack is a musical theatre piece based on the life of American President John F Kennedy, and was devised by HNC Musical Theatre. The class had to conduct extensive research on JFK’s life, including his family history and any conspiracy theories which surrounded his assassinations. The songs performed in this piece were songs by popular music artists, such as Happy by Pharrell Williams, Can’t rely on You by Paloma Faith, All of Me by John Legend etc.As this piece had a long timeline, there where various different locations that we had to produce. This meant a lot of props and scene changes. It was probably one of the most hectic shows that I have worked on backstage, but it was an challenging and rewarding. Even as ASM’s we had to dress in black suits to pass as either CIA agents or general support for the president, and we were required to be present on stage for certain scenes. This was one of the first Final Major Productions of the year, and I think it did a great job in preparing us for what was to come!

Mercury Fur – 24 Kitchen StreetProduction and Technical Manager
09/02/2015-10/02/2015
Mercury Fur is a play written by Philip Ridley. This was the second play produced by Hollowtalk Theatre, and my second collaboration with the theatre group. I acted as Production Manager, Technical Supervisor and Deputy Stage Manager at the time of the performance. I had made a close bond with Hollowtalk Theatre since working on their first show, and was eager to be involved in their next project. I was excited as this would be one of the first shows I had worked on that was external to college. It was performed in small warehouse space 24 Kitchen Street. This venue is regularly used to host independent club nights, and is far from your average theatre space. The biggest challenge I have faced was figuring out just how to turn this venue into a functioning theatre space which met the requirements we needed for the piece. I visited the venue regularly to discuss options with the venue manager and to see what of their resources we would be able to use. I then had to figure out what equipment we still needed to source, and to ensure that the building would be capable to power it all. I was also responsible for helping to organise props and set that was used in the piece, and ensured that all cast members where familiar with their own props and where they belong. This was definitely the most challenging and demanding production that I have ever worked on, but it is by far my favourite piece. The entire process was informative for me, and made me use initiative. It made me work on my communication skills to, as I was responsible for pulling together my own crew and allocating roles and tasks.

The Tale of Ludwig Grimm – City of Liverpool College Arts Centre, G2 TheatreSound operator
21/05/2014-22/05/2014
The Tale of Ludwig Grimm was a devised piece made by the director with input from the cast. It was loosely based on various famous Tales by The Brothers Grimm, including Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The White Snake, Rapunzel and Cinderella, and we followed the brothers themselves as they went from tale to tale. There was a live band which provided most of the musical underscores and tracks for the piece. I had to source and edit any other sound effects that were used, etc extend a campfire track. There were also brief scenes where performers where required to use radio mics, so I was also responsible for monitoring their levels.
