Electronically Educating Psychologists About Current...

INTRODUCTION With the recent enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the ever-evolving US health care system, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) policy is an integral part of understanding how psychological services are billed and reimbursed. Education of professionals is integral for effective navigation of policy changes. What is CPT? A coding system developed by AMA in conjunction with CMS to describe professional health services. Each code has a specific five digit number and description as well as a reimbursable value. Various “physicians” or “qualified health professional” perform services requiring the use of CPT codes. Why is it important for Psychologists? A new health care plan recently passed by congress will change health care (largest change in 25-50 years). An entirely new diagnostic system will be in place in two years. Medicaid started using medicare NCCI edits effective 04.01.11. OBJECTIVE The current study’s purpose is to describe the website qualitatively, quantify website utilization, and gather data to enhance the educational properties of the website. Qualitative analysis includes a review of website structure, content, content delivery, and search engine optimization (SEO) terminology. METHOD Website utilization was quantified using website statistic collection program, JetPack for Wordpress. Electronically Educating Psychologists About Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) SUMMARY QUALITATIVE Site structure was built using Wordpress (open source website content management system based on PHP and MySQL). Homepage contains a Youtube video slideshow and PDF document, these contain the majority of the educational materials provided. SEO keywords include; Psychology Coding, CPT, Current Protocol Terminology, Coding Psychological Services, Psychology Billing Codes, AMA, APA, CMS. QUANATATIVE Visitors increased in February 2014 after code changes were enacted. Visitors were referred from multiple sources with the most frequent being Google’s search engine. The homepage had the most visits. Visitors with IP addresses representing 32 different counties visited. The top outgoing links were for social media or associated with the American Psychological Association (APA). FUTURE DIRECTIONS Use electronic survey in order to more empirically establish methodology to educate and inform psychologists about effective use of CPT codes and changes to national policies.
