A method of electroless plating atleast one homogeneous metalcoating in a predetermined pat­tern on a substrate surface havingpendant hydroxy groups compris­ing reacting the pendant hydroxygroups of the substrate surfacewith a silyl hydride to form a sil­icon hydride bond directly on thesubstrate surface without any in­tervening bonds; immersing thesubstrate surface in a metal ionsolution to provide a monatomicmetal layer in a predeterminedpattern on the substrate surface;and immersing the activated sub­strate surface in a solution con­taining a chemical reducing agentand metal ions to build up at least

one homogeneous metal coatingdirectly only on the monatomicmetal layer.
