HEATS AND

COOLSThe VMV-HC connects with standardmilitary connectors to the auxiliarypower supply of 24 volts DC inarmoured and soft-skinned vehicles.

The VMV-HC has a low power uptakeand only pulls 10amps in the coolingoperation and 15 amps in heatingoperation. The unit has a built-in

intelligent sensor, the unit automaticallyswitches off if the battery power isgetting low and drops to 22 volts; thereis a similar over-voltage protection.

The outside of the VMV-HC unit remainscool-to-touch to ensure safe transitshould the product be mounted on theback door of a vehicle, or located in an

exposed position. Constructed from a

robust stainless steel outer casing, the

unit is sealed to be water-tight. The

choice of heating ranges is the same

as the RAK15, when the unit is in

chilling mode you can take 3 litres of

drinking water from 50°C to 15-20°C

at 0.5°C/min.

Heats or cools while on the move Chills 3 litres of drinking water to 15-20°Ceven at elevated temperatures or heats MRE’s and gives hot potable water on demand Non-spill relief system Low thermal signature 24V DC

VMV-HC units are designed towithstand the rigours of modernconflict and have beencomprehensively tested to meetmilitary standard specification MIL-PRF-44466D, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-810.

VEHICLE MOUNTEDHEATERS AND WATERRATIONS

Electrothermal Engineering Ltd

Electrothermal Engineering Ltd is theworld leader in serving science; providinganalytical instruments, equipment, reagents and consumables, software andservices for research, analysis, discoveryand diagnostics.

Surprising uses for electrical heaters, fromheating drinking water and warming foodrations on-the-move in a military vehicle?Or helping to make the pouring of thatperfect pint of beer less of an art form andmore of a foolproof operation? Facetiousenquiries, you could be forgiven for

thinking, posed to raise a smile in an idlemoment with colleagues who haveenjoyed too much of the ice-cold beer. Most definitely not! These were criticalbusiness problems for the organizationsconcerned and all of them resolved.

If the right heater cannot be supplied offthe shelf, then they lend themselvesreadily to customization, sometimesdirectly by the customer but mostly by ourown design team. The only real limitationto their use is imagination; and with manyyears of experience, this is something we

have plenty of.

The need for battery warmers in a planesoon makes itself very clear when youconsider that the airstream can be as coldas -50°C at high altitudes reached byfighters. Batteries exposed to this quicklycease working. This scenario can beavoided by completely encasing thebattery with one of our silicone rubbermat heaters. They can heat up to 200°C,and are held firmly in place with adhesivesthat will withstand up to 250°C. In practice, two such encased batteries would beplaced side by side. We have beenmanufacturing military aircraft batterywarmers in conjunction with major dry-cellbattery manufacture for over ten years.

Military VehicleMounted, Water and

Ration HeatersThe Heater Water & Ration (HW&R) canprovide hot meals and drinks for a fiveperson crew of an armored vehicle orprovide hot water for washing, heatingwater for drinks and ration packs (MRE) in20 minutes (depending on power rating)under operational conditions or at other

times in most climates and keeping thecontents hot for over four hours afterswitch-off.

All this in a lightweight, robust andversatile unit which has both low and hightemperature settings, and features an over-temperature and low-battery (voltage) cut-out for safety. The unit comes with its ownbuilt-in control and has been designed inalignment with most military armouredvehicle power uptake requirements, so aseparate control unit is no longernecessary.

These units have been installed in manydifferent types of military vehicles in anumber of countries.

The HW&R NSN’s are 7310-01-387-1305,7310-99-362-3482 plus 7310-99-811-6909.Finally, we return to our starting point, pouring beer. This interesting applicationarose out of an enquiry from a major gascompany who had developed a new drinksdispensing system for public houses.Nowadays propellant gas plays a majorrole in dispensing beer as it is widely usedto force the beer out of the keg whist thebarperson pulls the pint. It can, however, affect the beer’s taste, as real ale drinkersare frequently known to lament, mainlydue to residual impurities in the gas. Tocounter this, the company had developeda new plastic membrane filter that would

condition the gas before the beer went upthe tube to be served. Their problem wasthat to be effective, the filter had to bekept at 40°C. In conjunction with ourselvesthe filter has been modified to include asurface heater that will last for ten years.Electrical Heaters - the only real limitationto their use is imagination….

We are maintaining our tradition ofinnovative product design, keeping abreastif not ahead, of current internationalstandards, as we believe that only throughexcellence will we succeed.

COMPLEX PROBLEMSSIMPLE SOLUTIONS

EOD Solutions Ltd

EOD Solutions Ltd is a companyspecifically created to undertakeammunition and weapons stockpiledestruction. The company employs retiredAmmunition Technical Officers andAmmunition Technicians trained at theArmy School of Ammunition in the UK to undertake the logistical destruction of ammunition. Understanding howammunition and weapons function is aprime consideration when dealing with thedestruction and reverse engineering ofthese dangerous items.

EOD Solutions Ltd has undertaken reverseengineering projects where the companyteamed with factories in country or otherorganisations that allowed the work to be undertaken in a safe and secure manner. Environmental issues are now of high importance when disposing ofammunition and EOD Solutions Ltd isworking with environmentalists in this area.

and built by the company in associationwith Caldo Engineering with whom thecompany has a long and trustedrelationship.

The TRADS (which is built into a forty footcontainer) comes complete with allinfrastructures so that the user can placethe system on the ground and within threedays have the system working destroyingammunition. The system has wind downlegs as well as lifting points that enable thesystem to be jacked up from the deliveryvehicle without the need for a crane or itcan be craned if the user requires. This isespecially desirable in the present positionin Afghanistan where the system is astandalone operation outside theammunition storage facility in an areawhere there is no infrastructure. See videoEOD Solutions Ltd is currently building asmaller batch type furnace for EODTechnologies in the United States fordeployment in Afghanistan in support ofUS troops in other areas of the province. The picture sows the build nearingcompletion ready to ship to Afghanistan.

Explosion AftermathClearance

The company is currently working with theInternational Trust Fund (ITF) undertakinga clearance operation in Gerdec, Albaniawhere four explosions at an ammunitionunpacking facility killed 26 people andinjured hundreds more.

Over two hundred house were damagedor had to be demolished. In all a total of90 acres of land is to be remediated beforebeing returned to the Government ofAlbania. This is a difficult and demandingprocess as it is in the centre of a residentialarea. This limits operations considerablydue to the proximity of the localpopulation.

This year will see the conclusion of thistask that has made EOD Solutions Ltd wellequipped to undertake future operationsof this kind. The pictures show theproblems and the successes EOD SolutionsLtd has accomplished over the four yearclearance process.

Weapons DestructionEOD Solutions Ltd has undertakenweapons destruction programmes thatreduce the weapons to scrap to preventuse or sale to organisations that leantowards terrorism and criminal activities. So far 175000 have been destroyed inAlbania and another 10000 in Senegal bythe company. The weapons are destroyedusing methods that totally destroy anypart of the weapon from being used for itsintended purpose.

Quality, Safety andthe Environment

EOD Solutions Ltd has strict safety quality and environmental guidelines that are in line with US and UKgovernmental regulations. These guidelinesare employed irrespective of whichcountry operations are undertaken.Demilitarisation procedures are also allied to the NATO and UK regulationsregarding ammunition and weapons safetyand disposal.

When evaluating systems of all kinds -communications and transportation rankamong the two most important - reducingsize, weight and power, especially forsystems used in theater, is paramount. Thismust all be accomplished while consideringthe "C" that is usually found at the end ofthat acronym: cost.

There are a number of reasons why a morecompact RUPS device is preferable in militaryapplications. From a purely physicalperspective, the smaller the equipment, themore equipment can fit in the same orsmaller space. Thus, if a RUPS is reduced byeven 1U in height (1.75”), another 1U modem, router or server can be placed in the extraspace that has been created. This translatesto additional features, functionality andredundancy.

Or assume the RUPS is mounted in a 4Utransit case with routers and servers. Notonly will a smaller RUPS create "extra" roomfor critical communications equipment, withno additional equipment the transit case sizeitself can be reduced. In the end, the smallerRUPS allows for a smaller, lighter systemand/or the ability to add more equipment tothe system without increasing weight or size.

Why is all this important? In military

applications, particularly combat situations, every available inch of space is valued asprime real estate. And while RUPS devicesare a crucial source of power, they dodisplace real estate that could potentially beemployed for computers, servers, androuters – the truly critical gear that makes upthe C4ISR landscape. Even if the additionalspace isn't utilized, it serves to lighten theload.

The quest for smaller RUPS size alsotranslates to a decrease in weight, which isan ongoing issue in military operations. Tobegin with, the average soldier carries over100 pounds of gear into battle. So if they'relugging transit cases around, it’s essential forthe weight to be manageable. Weightreduction in any form is important to reducethe burden on military personnel. Plus,"smaller" not only translates to moreelectronic gear but more food, water andammunition for the soldiers.

What's more, consider the extra weight onmilitary vehicles, such as a Humvee. Theadditional poundage decreases efficiency, causing greater fuel consumption; given thatfuel in theater can cost as much as $400gallon, the importance of this factor cannotbe overstated. Weight reduction - regardlessof how little - is a fundamental objective.

When it Comes to RuggedUninterupptible PowerSupplies in the Military,Smaller is Better

The modern military relies on computers andother sophisticated electronic equipment toperform its vital missions, often in extremelyharsh environments like the mountains ofAfghanistan or the intense heat of Iraq.

Electrical variance, surges, spikes, andinterruptions can cause communication andsurveillance breakdown and data loss, especially during the rigors of active duty.Consequently, the military depends heavilyon rugged uninterruptible power supplies(RUPS) to keep that equipment online withclean AC or DC power while withstandingthe various weather- and terrain-relatedimpediments to performance, includingblown rain, dust and sand as well as extremeheat and cold. The equipment must alsowithstand significant vibration and shocksustained from multiple sources.

However, reliability, while certainly the mostcritical characteristic of a quality RUPSdevice is not the only important variable; sizeand weight are also vital. More to the point, when evaluating the size of a RUPS device ina military environment, a small, high powerdensity unit is the best solution.

The reason? RUPS devices, like virtuallyeverything in the military, fall under thejurisdiction of SWaP: size, weight, and power.

isolation transformer to a high-frequencytransformer. Of course, engineers areconstantly examining alternative ways inwhich RUPS devices can be compressedwhile maintaining the necessary poweroutput - including adopting different boardtechnology within the device. Essentially, any part of the device is a candidate forpotential size reduction; but at this time, thehigh-frequency transformer remains at theforefront of this effort.

Lithium-Ion batteries also provide a size-reduction opportunity, as these batterieshave a higher power density compared tothe lead-acid variety, thereby decreasingweight and increasing battery backup runtime.

Ultimately, the decision regarding the bestpossible RUPS for any application, particularly military, is based on meeting therequired power needs for the applicationwhile keeping size and weight at an absoluteminimum.

The focus on RUPS size and weight reductionnot only means that more space is availablein the areas where the RUPS will reside; italso means that transit cases, militaryvehicles and the shelter in which they arelocated can be designed with a smaller sizein mind. Until recently, it would not beunusual for the designer of a new transit caseto allot at least 4U for a RUPS device. That’sbecause military equipment designers oftenrely on past experience to estimate thespace the RUPS will require and plug thatfigure into their blueprints. With theavailability of 1U devices, however, thatallotted space can be significantly reduced. As long as designers stay current on what isavailable in the RUPS world, they can planaccordingly.

Even more than simply being aware of whatis available in terms of smaller RUPS devices;it is advisable for designers to consultdirectly with RUPS manufacturers in the earlystages of product development. This willgive them more latitude in design and can, asit is often said, help people understand theart of the possible.

What is the practical threshold for the sizeof the RUPS device? Plainly put, how smallcan these devices realistically be made?Given the level of performance they areexpected to deliver – as well as the coolingsystems that are an essential part of theirmake-up – it is difficult, at this time, toenvision anything smaller. However, it washard to imagine a 1U device at this powerbefore it was actually manufactured, so it’sentirely possible that RUPS devices could beeven smaller in the future.

There is no question that when it comes toRUPS devices, the quality and ability todeliver clean, uninterruptible power ispriority one. But given the situations inwhich these devices are being used, as wellas the objectives at stake, size and weight -especially reducing the burden on ourfighting men and women - are also critical.

ABOUT THE AUTHORSteve Graves is Vice President of Sales andMarketing for Acumentrics. Headquarteredin Westwood, Massachusetts, Acumentricsdesigns Rugged Uninterruptible PowerSupplies (RUPS) for use in harsh and combatenvironments as well as heavy-dutyindustrial applications.

It’s not just the equipment of today thatrequires space. Because new C4ISRcapability is constantly being developed, there is a continuing need to create space forthese devices; equipment that might not beon the drawing board today will requirespace tomorrow. Thus, the need to decreaseRUPS size and weight needs to keep pacewith these new developments. Additionally, power consumption affects mission duration, and power electronics and digital processingare big power consumers. Consequently, while the need for smaller and lighter RUPSdevices in combat situations is apparent, these goals must be meet without sacrificingpower output.

All of this begs the question, "Where are theprimary opportunities for RUPS sizereduction that won’t affect performance?"Ultimately, through increased power density,an equivalent amount of power can beproduced in a much smaller form factor. Thus, the key area for accomplishing thecutback in size is the transformer - morespecifically, to change from a full galvanic

Avon EZAir Takes theHeat from MiddleEastern Market Avon Protection Systems’ EZAir, the first ofits new generation of NIOSH approvedcompact, battery powered modular airflowunits, is now winning major orders in theMiddle East following successful trials.

By combining an advance in Avon respiratorysystem engineering within an ergonomicallydesigned housing unit, the EZAir delivers adramatic reduction in the physical burden oftraditional respiratory systems. This hasfound particular favour with lawenforcement teams and first responder unitsoperating in the arduous Middle Easternclimate – where temperatures regularlyexceeds 40 centigrade.

Both Bahrain and Quatar have now placedsignificant orders for EZAir units tocomplement their large stocks of Avon FM53and C50 masks with further orders from theSaudi National Guard expected soon.

At the heart of the Avon EZAir modular unitis a super-light engine. This drives a compact, self contained blower unit which

incorporates Avon’s NIOSH approved CTF12riot filters. In addition, on board warningalarms, supported by ‘hot swap’ removablebatteries, provides the wearer with anincredibly lightweight and versatile systemthat delivers a new level of comfortcombined with traditional Avon respiratoryprotection.

According to Steve Windley, Avon’s SalesManager for the Middle East, “Reducingwearer burden is particularly importantduring high intensity periods of activity, especially for the high temperatures thatface Middle Eastern law enforcement orHAZMAT teams during pro-longed crowd-monitoring or CBRN clean-up scenarios.

“Designed primarily for use with AvonProtection’s class leading FM53 and C50 full-face respirator, the Avon EZAir module hasintroduced a new category of breath assistblower with a wellbeing product that makesit easier and cooler to breathe, and reducesthe size and weight of traditionallyburdensome respiratory support systems.”

Avon’s newly designed modular respiratoryengine weighs just 225g and measures 70mmx 120mm in diameter. This, Avon claims, positions it as the smallest self-containedblower unit with integrated battery pack onthe market. The unit can run on threedifferent power options: replaceable CR-123;rechargeable Li-ion or single use emergencybattery. Depending on filter and batteryconfiguration, the unit will run from 4-10hours and is supported with on boardwarning alarms.

However, it is the new level of wearercomfort that Avon believes will prove Avon’sEZAir greatest attraction. Here the unitprovides users with cooler air intake, elimination of potential for mask fogging, anda lower breathing resistance when comparedto non-assisted filters. All of which enablesthe wearer to last much longer in a physicallytaxing scenario. And, equipped with Avon’sCTF12 filter, the wearer is fully protectedfrom non-lethal riot agents, including tear gasand pepper spray.

RUD know how important safety is in lifting

which is why they have produced further

product improvements to one of their leading

lifting points. The LBS "RUD lug", together with

the RBS Eye Plate has recently gone through a

significant upgrade - the biggest change since

the product line was first introduced more than

To align with RUD's leading Grade 100 VIP Sling

Chain system; the LBS & RBS ranges have been

re-designed and released as the VLBS & VRBS.

The working Load Limits (WLL's) have increased

significantly and the WLL(s) now align and

match in with the RUD® Grade 100 chain ratings.

The new VIP version VLBS is forged out of high-

resistant steel CrNiMo is 100% crack detected

and offers RUD’s distinctive fluorescent pink

powder coated surface. The VLBS offers many

advantageous features as listed below:

• VLBS ring bracket is forged out of the high

strength material CrNiMo with two patented

inner supporting lugs.

• It provides an optimal sitting of the hookand offers better protection for the clampingsprings.

• The optimized support shape at thesuspension ring enables a strong support atloads 90° to the plane of the eye.

• The load bracket can be tilted by 180°

• 100% crack detected

• The welding block is forged out of qualitywelding material 1.0577+N (St 52-3) and clearlystamped with an identification number for thepermissible WLL (Working Load Limit) Thedistance lugs are for the measurement andprovision of the required gap for the rootwelding (approx. 3mm). Important: The weld

arrangement (continuous HV weld) fulfils the

requirements of DIN 18800 i.e. the closed weld

avoids corrosion and is thus suitable for outdoor

use. A protected spring keeps the ring bracket

in every required position without tipping and

it also reduces vibration induced noise.

• The VRBS is available up to 50t WLL and can

be loaded in any direction.

As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of

lifting and lashing applications combined with

their extensive range of products and

knowledge in the market, RUD are continually

innovating and developing their extensive

product range to stay at the forefront of their

customers’ demands.

Systematic and AgustaWestland, aFinmeccanica company, are working together toprovide an enhanced rotorcraft situationalawareness (SA) capability. Following the signingof a Heads of Agreement in January this year, this joint development will integrateSystematic’s SitaWare command and controlsoftware with AgustaWestland’s rotorcraftplatforms.

Enhanced Rotorcraft Situational Awareness(SA) CapabilityWith funding provided by AgustaWestland,

Systematic has already conducted the initialscoping study which investigated thepossibilities to further enhance on-board SA forboth aircrew and passengers, whilst alsoconsidering the SA needs of taskingheadquarters and the units supported byaviation.

Geoff Hoon, AgustaWestland’s ManagingDirector for International Business said “We arepleased that this project with Systematic ismoving forward quickly, as we see goodbusiness potential not only in Denmark butaround the world on a number of our militaryhelicopter platforms. This project is just oneexample of our long running commitment towork with Danish industry and to deliver longterm benefits to Denmark.”

“The aim of this project is to further enhanceawareness of the land and maritime situationsin the cockpit, thereby better connecting therotorcraft to its operating environment.” saysStephen White, President Systematic UK, “Atthe same time we need to overcome thechallenge of providing this much neededcapability by exploiting data and hardwarealready available on the platform in order tominimise weight, cost and developmentimpact”.

Hans Jørgen Bohlbro, Director of ProductManagement C2 Systems goes on to say“SitaWare Frontline has been specificallydesigned to minimise bandwidth requirements,at the same time it has the ability to maintain ahigh update rate of friendly force tracks, makingit ideally suited to this job. The software alsohas a small footprint with a lean GIS whichallows it to be installed on existing processorsand displays in the aircraft.”

With the initial study now completed, theintegration of SitaWare Frontline with theAgustaWestland AW101 avionic systems is nowunderway. The system will also be available onAW159. SitaWare Frontline will provide a furtherenhancement to the modern, fully integrated, reduced workload cockpits of the AW101 andAW159, by providing aircrew with enhanced SA.SitaWare Headquarters and WebCOP will alsobe integrated into the AgustaWestland SkyflightMission Planning System, which will address asignificant capability shortfall in connectingrotorcraft headquarters to the wider commandand control networks. With significantengineering support from AgustaWestland aninitial operational capability will be availableearly next year and will go through field testsand trials with the Royal Danish Air Force.

The output of this industrial cooperationproject is initially directed at the Danish ArmedForces for use on the Danish Multi RoleHelicopter (DMRH). Once the initial operationalcapability has been proven, Systematic andAgustaWestland will go on to develop a fulloperational capability which will be offered onthe international market.

Systematic and AgustaWestlandCollaborate on an EnhancedRotorcraft SituationalAwareness Capability
