Report Card Day is one of the most important days of the school year. Please sign up for an appointment through the classroom teacher to discuss your child’s progress to date. This year the Scholastic Book Fair will be the week of November 12-15, 2019. The book fair will be held in what we like to call “the Fish Bowl,” which is the area in the new building located at the Door 3 entrance. We hope you can stop by and pick up a “good read!” Morning drop off has been moving quite nicely and I thank all parents who use our Kiss-N-GO - and keep going! Parents, please be mindful of traffic laws and follow the rules of the road by not blocking driveways, driving through alleyways, making sure to fully stop at stop signs, and being mindful of crosswalks and coned/blockaded areas. The volunteers that you see in the morning are giving their time to ensure the safety of all of our students, including yours, so please be patient and kind. At DISMISSAL, parents are discouraged from double parking - leaving their vehicle unattended - to pick up their child. All Garvy students (and parents) are created equal - therefore all parents are expected to pick up their children from their assigned door, outside, at 3:30 P.M. without early dismissals, double parking, blocking crosswalks or violating traffic laws. NOVEMBER 2019

JOHN W. GARVY ELEMENTARY

Time to fall back into the groove of the school year and welcome in the second quarter!

Originally, November 7th was to be the last day of the first quarter and Friday the 8th was to be

a School Improvement Day for teachers and students were not to report to school. At this time,

we are awaiting the board to report what the calendar changes will be and once

determined I will make sure to communicate immediately. All dates on the current

calendar are subject to change.

Report Card Pick-Up Day is scheduled for Wednesday, November 13th from 11:45-6:00. Report

Card Day is one of the most important days of the school year. It is a time for parents to have

conferences with their children’s teachers to review progress made over the course of the first

quarter. Please sign up for an appointment through the classroom teacher to discuss your child’s

progress to date.

This year the Scholastic Book Fair will be the week of November 12-15, 2019. The book fair will

be held in what we like to call “the Fish Bowl,” which is the area in the new building located at

the Door 3 entrance. We hope you can stop by and pick up a “good read!”

Morning drop off has been moving quite nicely and I thank all parents who use our Kiss-N-GO -

and keep going! Parents, please be mindful of traffic laws and follow the rules of the road by not

blocking driveways, driving through alleyways, making sure to fully stop at stop signs, and being

Happy Thanksgiving to all Garvy families!!!

It is wonderful to have all the students and staff back in the building! I am extremely grateful for the sacrifice the teachers and SECAs make on a daily basis for the Garvy children.

It is amazing that we are already in November and the Thanksgiving holiday is upon us. December 3rd, marks the

annual #GivingTuesday event. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social

media. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely-recognized shopping events

Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday

and end-of-year giving. This year, think about how you can give back to your school, your community, your city, your

country, and/or the world.

A couple of reminders:

Chilly weather is upon us. Every day, we have recess outside unless the wind chill is below 20 degrees or there

is precipitation. So please dress your child appropiately for the weather. Boots should be worn if it snows

and students are to bring a change of shoes to be worn in the building. Shorts cannot be worn to school again

until April.

Report Card Pickup is scheduled for Wednesday, November 13th from 11:45am to 6:00pm.

Be careful of all traffic around the school when arriving and departing. In addition, students are asked to leave

the school grounds at dismissal time if they are not accompanied by an adult; School supervision ends at

3:30pm.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT!!!

Ms. Corbett, our new Performing Arts teacher, attended the Arts Mega Summit as a representative of Garvy School. The first half of the event was a meeting with the CPS Arts Team and other teachers across the city. The second half of the summit was a networking session with various arts organizations throughout Chicago. Each teacher was given a card to fill out and if they met with at least 10 organizations the school was entered in a drawing. Ms. Corbett's name was drawn and Garvy was awarded $1000 towards arts programing this year. Congrats Ms. Corbett!

Year-to-Date Schoolwide Attendance = 96.9%

The Chicago Public Library will once again participate in Read for the

Record in November. https://www.jstart.org/read-for-the-record-3/

This event promotes literacy and fun by attempting to set a world

record for the most people reading the same book on the same day.

Read for the Record will take place during the week of November 4-7.

This Year’s Book is Thank You, Omu! By Oge Mora.

Thank You, Omu! tells the story of a generous elderly woman who

makes a fantastic pot of thick red stew. The scent from her stew

travels all throughout her neighborhood and brings all of her

community members over to her home for a taste. By the end, she

shares a lovely feast with her neighbors where everyone contributes to

the meal.
