Quick Review …

Matter is something that has mass and takes up space.

It is made up of atoms which are tiny pieces of matter made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.

Atoms are divided up into different types (elements) based on the number of protons it has.

Element: A substance that CANNOT be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means, it is made up entirely of one type of atom

We can find all the different elements on the periodic table.

Molecule: A substance that has two or more atoms joined together by a chemical bond

Compounds have to have at least two different elements bonded together whereas molecules could be the same element bonded together.

There are two parts to a solution…

1) Solvent – material in which the solute is dissolved

*For kool-aid water is the solvent

2) Solute – the substance that is dissolved in the solvent

*For kool-aid, sugar and kool-aid mix are the solutes
