1. Introduction

This guide is leading you through the setup of the PokerStrategy.com Elephant and helps you to get started.

2. Prerequisites

2.1. Operating System

The PokerStrategy.com Elephant runs on the following systems:

• Windows XP SP3

• Windows Vista SP1

• Windows 7

2.2. Additional Software

These software packages are required during runtime of PokerStrategy.com Elephant. They will be down-

loaded and installed automatically if they are not already installed.

• Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1

• Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package

• Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package

2.3. Minimal Hardware Requirements

• 2 GHz CPU

• 1 GB RAM

• 200 MB free hard disk space1

3. Where To Get The Latest Version

The latest setup file will be published on

• http://elephant.pokerstrategy.com and

• http://www.pokerstrategy.com/software/9.

4. Setup Process

This section will guide you through the setup process of the PokerStrategy.com Elephant.

Please note: Close any running instance of the PokerStrategy.com Elephant before continuing with the setup.

4.1. The Setup File

Locate the executable setup file named ”setup-elephant-x.x.x.x.exe”2, as shown in figure 1.

Select it and press return/enter or start it with a double click. When the setup starts, the installation will be

prepared and a dialogue window is shown.

2”x.x.x.x” is replaced by the current PokerStrategy.com Elephant version number of the downloaded file. E.g.:

”setup-elephant-00.85.1357.2169.exe”

4.2. Configuration

When the ”Preparing to Install” dialogue disappears, the Welcome Screen is shown. Please click Next to

continue with the setup configuration. The installation has not started yet.

4.3. Licence Agreement

The ”Licence Agreement Screen” is shown right after the ”Welcome Screen”.

In order to proceed with the installation you have to read and accept the End-User Licence Agreement (EULA).

The decline option is active by default. Activate the accept option, then click Next to continue with the setup.

This dialogue offers a choice between the two setup types:

• Complete: Installs the PokerStrategy.com Elephant with all options into the default folder. You will

directly be taken to the ”Ready to Install” dialogue (See 4.6 Ready to Install on page 9).

• Custom: Installs the PokerStrategy.com Elephant with a customized option set (See 4.5 Custom Instal-

lation on page 8).

4.5.1. Choose Destination Location

Use the Browse button to choose a destination and click on the Next button to get to the ”Select Features”

dialogue (See 4.5.2 Select Features on page 9). You can of course just click on the Next button to leave the

installation folder with its default.

Select the PokerStrategy.com Elephant features you want to install. Note that you can only turn off optional

features like the foreign language support. The Next button will take you to the ”Ready to Install” dialogue (See

4.6 Ready to Install on page 9).

When the setup configuration is done, the ”Ready to Install the Program” dialogue is shown.

Please click Install to start the installation process.

As soon as the installation is done, the ”InstallShield Wizard Completed” dialogue is displayed.

Here you can quit the setup and choose to read the latest release notes and/or start the PokerStrategy.com

Elephant immediately.

Check the desired boxes and click Finish to quit the setup and proceed with the selected actions.

When the setup is completed, a shortcut to the PokerStrategy.com Elephant is placed on the desktop and a new

entry is added to the Windows R© Start Menu, at Programs/PokerStrategy.com/PokerStrategy.com Elephant.

The PokerStrategy.com Elephant can be started using either one of it.

7.1. The First Start

7.1.1. Licence

When the PokerStrategy.com Elephant is started for the first time, a notification with the information that the

PokerStrategy.com Elephant is running under trial licence is displayed (See figure 11). A licence code for the

full version will be achived by earning 1.000 StrategyPoints and you can enter your licence code when you click

on Enter licence and fill out the upcoming form (See figure 12).

7.1.2. Install and Setup a Database

If you have a version of the Holdem Manager installed on your system, please refer to A Holdem Man-

ager Troubleshooting on page 28.

The PokerStrategy.com Elephant needs a PostgreSQL database to store the information about the played and

imported hands. You are notified about this by a window popping up on first start (See figure 13).

Type in a username (default is elephant) and a password of your choice and note it down. This is important for

later purpose e.g. for certain PokerStrategy.com Elephant upgrades: You will need to enter these credentials

to access your database again.

Please note: A running PostgreSQL database (version 8.3 or higher) is essential to work with the PokerStrat-

egy.com Elephant. Only chose No, do not install. if it is already installed or if you will install it manually later

and you know what you are doing.

After installing PostgreSQL, it is necessary that you restart the PokerStrategy.com Elephant (See figure 14).

When you restart the PokerStrategy.com Elephant, you will be asked to create a new database as shown in

figure 15. Click OK.

Enter the chose credentials for the PostgreSQL installation in the next form (see figure 16) and click OK. The

database is created and you are notified about the successful creation. Click OK.

The welcome screen appears (see figure 17). You are know ready to use the PokerStrategy.com Elephant.

7.2. Configuration

The PokerStrategy.com Elephant needs to parse the hand history files created by the poker room(s) while

playing. To analyse the data of your played poker hands Go to the Import Hand files page by clicking the

button shown in figure 18.

1. With Site settings... you can configure the settings for each poker room to enable the PokerStrategy.com

Elephant to import hand history files automatically. This is handled in section 7.2.1.

2. You can add folders with files to import. This can be done multiple times.

3. You can add particular files to import. This can be done multiple times.

4. The import of the selected files is only started if the Start import button is pressed.

5. You can also import text content directly from clipboard.

7.2.1. Auto Import

If you have installed any poker room software clients (e.g. Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars or PartyPoker) the

PokerStrategy.com Elephant normally detects this installations and configures itself so that the paths to the

hand history folders are set. To check this, chose Site settings... to open the list of configured poker rooms

(see figure 20).

If the room you play is listed, chose it and click Edit... otherwise click New....

In the upcoming form that is (see figure 21) make sure that:

1. The poker room you want the PokerStrategy.com Elephant automatically import hand histories is set.

2. Auto-import is active for this poker room

3. The path where the PokerStrategy.com Elephant watches for hand history files is set to the folder where

the poker room actually stores them.

You can also see the known screen names in 4. and add names to it with 5. and 6.

Repeat this for a all poker rooms you are using.

You are know ready to play with the PokerStrategy.com Elephant running in background analysing your

played hands.

7.3. Using The PokerStrategy.com Elephant

7.3.1. Playing With HUD

Please note: A HUD is only provided for cash games.

If all settings for auto-import are configured proper, according to section 7.2.1, the PokerStrategy.com Elephant

will display a HUD ( head-up display, see figure 22) with information about your opponents. This information is

based on data of the played hands that is analysed by the PokerStrategy.com Elephant and it will help you to

evaluate the behaviour of your opponents during a running poker game.

Please note: The PokerStrategy.com Elephant needs at least one hand history file for each poker table to

compile the data for the HUD. If for any reason no hand history files are created (e.g. because you sit out the

whole time) the HUD will remain in its initial status (see figure 23).

The HUD shown in figure 22 is running in beginner mode that means that the actual statistic values (such as

numeric values and percentages) are translated into easier to understand verbal interpretations.

Of course, an expert mode can be activated. If you are sure which values you want the PokerStrategy.com

Elephant to display, you can go to the HUD settings (figure 24). Make sure you switch the HUD mode to Expert

on the settings tab. The displayed values can be configured on the HUD tab.

7.3.2. Analysis Pages

There are several pages the PokerStrategy.com Elephant provides to compile and display the collected and

analysed hand history data.

Cash Games

Overview On the Overview page (see figure 25) the statistics for winnings and losses are shown as graph

and in textual representation.

Hands A list of all played hands is displayed on the Hands page (see figure 26). A beautified representation

can be displayed for each single hand.

Analysis For detailed analysis of actions and winnings/losses statistics select the Analysis page (see figure

27).

Beginner The Beginner page (see figure 28) displays the behaviour of the hero similar to the values dis-

played in beginner mode HUD for the opponents. The hero actions are divided by the game phase and

evaluated.

Tournaments

Overview On the Overview page (see figure 29) the statistics for winnings and losses are shown as graph

and in textual representation. The textual representation additionally contains duration and currency depending

statistics.

Details The Details page (see figure 30) hosts a list of all played tournaments along with a summary for each

chosen tournament as well as a graphically enhanced list of all hands for each particular tournament along

with a highlighted representation for a chosen hand.

A. Holdem Manager Troubleshooting


Please follow the instructions from this section, when Holdem Manager is already installed on your machine.

According to the current setup, PostgreSQL 8.4 is installed along with the Holdem Manager. It is important, to

know the credentials of the service account, that has been created during the installation.

• The username created by Holdem Manager is: ”postgres”.

• The password for the user ”postgres” is: ”postgrespass”.

• The postgresql database service is using port ”5432”.

The default database which came along with the Holdem Manager can’t be used by the PokerStrategy.com

Elephant, because the Holdem Manager uses a different database structure and encoding.

On the first start of the program, you can choose wether you want to install PostgreSQL or not. Do not install

postgreSQL, since it is already installed on your system.

This message will appear when you start the PokerStrategy.com Elephant:

It can come up serveral times. Skip all of those by clicking Ok.

At this point, you have to create a new database within the PokerStrategy.com Elephant. Use the built-in

database management to do so. It is important to use the correct credentials listed above. There is no active

PokerStrategy.com Elephant licence required in order to create multiple databases. It is even possible to create

and manage databases without any restrictions after the end of the trial-period.

This guide refers exclusively to a standard installation of Holdem Manager with postgresql being in-

stalled along with HM.

In case you installed the postgreSQL service manually, you already created an username and a password

during the installation process. Please use this credentials to connect to the database server and create new

databases.

Other Possible Database Related Errors

Problem: The PokerStrategy.com Elephant cannot connect to the database service while creating a database.

Solution: PostgreSQL 8.4 (8.3) is installed correctly and the service is up and running (Start - Programs -

PostgreSQL - Start service).
