A Brief History of Highland Park

On July 12, 1957 a brave group of Christians met with the Rev. James Trammell, District Superintendent of the Lake City District to discuss and pray about starting a church on Second Loop Road. A little more than four and half acres of prime farmland was sold by the Lazar family for $10,000 to begin the new church. The Rev. George Fields was appointed pastor of this church-to-be, and he began meeting with people, praying and working with them to start this new ministry. The first service was held August 11, 1957, and Highland Park was chartered two weeks later on August 25. There are still five members of Highland Park who were there that day- William Lancaster (who lives in Charlotte), Margaret Shirlaw, Lib Dickens, Clyde Nance, and Billy Jarrell (who was confirmed on that day). Services were held at Briggs Elementary, and later at Delmae Elementary Schools. The first church building was completed in May 1959. Additional educational facilities were built in 1961 and 1969, and the current sanctuary was built in 1994.

There are many ways of looking at the history of Highland Park United Methodist Church. One is to look at it through its record of serving others in the name of Christ. Jesus said, “By this will all people know that you are my disciples- that you love one another.” (John 13:35) He also said, “Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Matthew 16:25) Highland Park began with reaching out to the community in service. A Boy Scout troop was formed that is still in existence today (one of the oldest in the region). Youth and children’s recreational programs were developed to reach the growing young adult population of the area. The Women’s and Men’s ministries both found ways to be in service to the local community and to the world around us. Highland Park became involved in the Pee Dee Regional Nutrition program, started a clothes closet for needy children, helped initiate a crisis home for battered families, and became one of the founding churches of Lighthouse Ministries.

Through the years it has sent hundreds of youth and adults to serve in Salkehatchie Summer Service Camps, sent mission teams to Central America and Africa, and been the center of relief for those in the Pee Dee affected by the hurricanes and floodings. Highland Park helped start the Parking Lot Ministry, started the area’s only ministry to homeless families- Family Promise- and became a partner with Mercy Medicine Clinic, a free medical clinic for those in need. Highland Park has become one of the leading churches in supporting Epworth Children’s Home. Though our “Hands and Feet of Christ” ministries, we have partnered with dozens of agencies in the area to help God’s children in need.

Perhaps the most telling part of this story is that, because of our commitment to following Christ and being his hands and feet, each year we have the joy of welcoming dozens of new believers as they have come to faith by joining us as we answer the first call of Jesus, “Follow me.” We do not know exactly where Jesus will lead us in the future. But wherever he leads, we will follow.

We are Highland Park. We are the hands and feet of Jesus.
