Intro

In this presentation you will learn many facts about Brown Bears. There Scientific name is Ursus arctos horrbillis. Also you will learn about their diet, habitat, average size and body weight, range, map of range, family life, life cycle, anatomy, and some interesting facts.

Diet

Bears are omnivore which means they eat almost anything. A grizzly bear has one of the most wide ranging diets of any living animal. A healthy adult eats up to 35 Ib. (16 kg) of food each day. This can be made up of meat, insects, fish, eggs, roots, berries, leaves, and grasses. They hunt ground squirrels and young moose. They eat fish called salmon. They have been known to prey on large mammals when available such as moose, elk, caribou, white-tailed deer, mule deer, big horn sheep, bison, and even black bears.

Habitat

Brown bears live in forested mountains and hills, river valleys, and meadows as well as in the tundra and along the coast.

Average Size and weight

A full grown grizzly can grow up to 7 feet long and 4 feet high at the shoulders. Males can weigh up to 800 Ibs. Females weight up to 500 Ibs.

Range

Brown bears live in wild parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Grizzly bears once lived all over North America, but today they only are found in Alaska, Canada and just a few remote parts in the Rocky Mountains states of the U.S.

Family Life

The young cubs do not see their mother until they are about 15 weeks old because they are blind. A pregnant female grizzly moves uncomfortably inside her den. Grizzly bear cubs are born in an underground den. Grizzly bear females are exhalent mothers who will defend her cubs against any danger. A grizzly does not sleep all night instead they take very short naps during the day.

Life Cycle

Life cycle: Baby grizzly bears are called cubs. When it is three months old, it is ready to leave its mother’s den. After about a year it is an adult.

Interesting facts

For the first few months of their lives, the young cubs spend about an hour a day playing and the other 23 hours sleeping. A nick name for a male grizzly is silvertips. They could eat black bears when they are available.
