DESCRIPTION Two even teams Each team line up behind the starting line in a straight line one behind the

other Students will be seated on the floor with their legs wrapped around the waist

of the person in front of them – forming a “snake” The aim of each team is to move in coordination with each other to cross the

finish line The “snake” must not break; if a link is broken the team must go back to the

start line and start over First team to have the last person from the snake over the finish line wins

VARIATIONS Introduce cones that the “snake” has to zigzag through Once the “snake” passes the finish line, the team have to move backwards to

cross the start line Time each team to see how fast the can cross the finish line; fastest team wins Increase the length of the snake

EQUIPMENT Cones to mark start and finish lines

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS Stay within the boundary lines; avoid walls No “dragging” other students No contact with other teams

DESCRIPTION Two even teams Flags are placed at the end of each teams half along with a “jail” box Team 1 aims to capture Team 2’s flag and take it back to their half without

getting tagged and vice versa If a player is tagged they go to the jail box; person can only be freed by their

team mates tagging them; each team can only have 2 jail watchers Team that captures and returns flag to their half is victorious

VARIATIONS To win game, no team mates are to be in the jail box Add in flags Add in extra team; instead of stealing one teams flag you must steal two teams

flags

EQUIPMENT Flags Cones; to mark jail box Colour bands

Split field into 4 separate smaller croquet areas Break class into 4 even groups The aim for each individual student is to hit the ball through all 12 gates in

random order Each student has one hit, and then the next student has their hit and so on until

all players have had a turn, then they start at the beginning player again Once ball has passed through all of the gates, they then must hit a peg at the

end of the course The first person to hit their ball successfully through all the gates and hit the

peg at the end is the winner

VARIATIONS Increase / decrease amount of gates Increase length between each gate Increase / decrease length of peg Play for points

EQUIPMENT Ball (enough for each student, varied colours) Mallet (enough for each student) Gates Pegs Cones to mark each playing area

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS One mallet per group to minimise chance of students hitting each other No waving mallets around No throwing balls No removing gates and pegs from ground Stay within boundary Students must not stand in front of gates

The cat starts outside of the circle and the mouse starts inside the circle Students who have formed the circle sing “what time is it? Just struck 9, Is the

cat home? He’s about to dine” The aim of the cat is to chase the mouse, however the mouse can run in and

out of the circle For the cat to successfully tag the mouse, he or she must follow the path the

mouse takes Once mouse has been tagged, 2 new players take over the cat and mouse role

VARIATIONS Increase number cats & or mice Increase / decrease size of circle Introduce time limit

EQUIPMENT Colour bands

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS Students are encouraged to watch where they are running to avoid collisions

due to set out of game Stay in boundaries; avoid walls No grabbing onto other students No diving to tag mice

Pulyugge:

Outcomes/VELS:

Accept responsibility as a team member and support other members to share information, explore the ideas of others, and work cooperatively to achieve a shared purpose within a realistic timeframe.

Reflect on individual and team outcomes and act to improve their own and the team’s performance.

Rules:

This game requires two teams.

The objective of the game is for the tagging team to tag every player from the dodging team with the ball within the designated time.

To get a player out the tagger must tag a player from the dodging team without the ball leaving his or her hand.

Players in the tagging team must not run with the ball.

Once a player is tagged they are out (this is a rule of the game in its traditional form however in order to maximise academic learning time variations can be added).

Variations: Instead of going out the tagged player becomes part of the opposing team. Once a player is tagged they make a “scarecrow” shape and are allowed

back into the game once a team mate crawls through their legs. Passing must go boy girl.

Equipment:

Two balls (soft enough to tag someone with)

Organisation:

The ideal number per team in Pulyugge is 4-6. So in a class of 24 it would be preferable to run 2 games at once with 4 teams of 6.

The size of the playing field is dependant number of players on the field. If there were only 8 players on the field then an area the size of a badminton court would be suitable. If there were 12 or more students on the field then a netball third would probably be a more suitable size.

Oyster Shell:

VELS/Outcomes:

Accept responsibility as a team member and support other members to share information, explore the ideas of others, and work cooperatively to achieve a shared purpose within a realistic timeframe.

(This outcome is not particularly relevant in the most basic form of this game however once variations are added to the game students are encouraged to think in ways that can enhance the performance of the team)

Rules:

This game requires two teams (i.e. Light and Dark)

Each team stands on a line facing the opposing team (the lines are parallel and three metres apart).

There is also a line in the middle of the playing field dividing the field in half as well as a safety line approximately 20 metres from the middle of the field.

For the game to begin the teacher throws a bean bag (traditionally an oyster shell) up in the air.

Whichever teams half the bean bag lands in it is their job to tag the opposing team whilst the opposing team runs towards their safety line.

Carla Caminiti & Luke Murray

Page 9: elizabetharnoldonlineresources.weebly.comelizabetharnoldonlineresources.weebly.com/uploads/2/5/2/... · Web viewNAME KHO KHO (Indian) DESCRIPTION Two even teams Team 1 line up in

Every player from the tagging team who tags somebody has a point awarded to their team.

Every player from the non-tagging team that makes it past the safety line is awarded a point for their team.

Equipment:

One ball Organisation:

The ideal playing field for this game is a basketball court. This way the risk of students running into each other or into other objects is minimised.

Variations:

Instead of counting points if a player gets tagged they become part of the opposing team.

One major variation of this game involves the use of arm actions instead of a beanbag.

In this version of the game there are 3 arm actions Giants (arms up), Wizards (arms pointed straight) and Elf’s (arms down).

Giants beat Wizards, Wizards beat Elf’s and Elf’s beat Giants. Before each round each team discusses amongst themselves which arm

actions they will perform. Both teams perform the action when the teacher counts to three.

The team that has the winning arm chases the opposing team to the safety line (i.e. for the case Giants and Wizards the Giants would win).

Outcomes/VELS:

Accept responsibility as a team member and support other members to share information, explore the ideas of others, and work cooperatively to achieve a shared purpose within a realistic timeframe.

Reflect on individual and team outcomes and act to improve their own and the team’s performance.

(This game focuses primarily on team building and cooperation. This means that the outcomes for this particular game can be difficult to measure however this game can still be very useful for fostering a sense of teamwork and togetherness amongst students)

Rules:

This game encourages cooperation and teamwork between students so to begin with the teacher will deliberately withhold information from the students for the purpose of the game.

The game begins with every student being blindfolded.

All students are then asked to hold one small section of a long rope.

The teacher ensures that the students are all holding the rope in a random order (i.e. so that the students are all tangled together).

The teacher then informs the students that the aim of the game is for the students to move around so that the ends of the rope meet and so that they are standing in a circle.

At no stage in the game are students allowed to let go of the rope.

The game ends when the students have successfully made a circle with the students holding the two ends of the rope standing beside each other.

Equipment:

One long rope.

Organisation:

This game should be conducted in a large open space where there is little chance of students running into obstructions.

Rationale:The purpose for including Unusual or Games from other Cultures in a PE program is to extend students awareness and understanding of new and interesting games and activities from cultures that they may not have been predisposed to. Unusual or games from other cultures are games that the general student population would not typically be exposed to although they still allow the students to gain knowledge and understanding of team work skills and fundamental motor skills used in other common games such as Netball and Football.

VELS Level 5VELS STUDENT OUTCOMESDevelop and refine a range of movement and manipulative skills

Students will participate in a variety of games throughout the lesson in which they have to move all parts of their body to enhance learning of skills related to major games.

Students undertake a variety of roles in team games

Students will rotate the team roles throughout the games. Giving each student a fair and adequate amount of experience in each role.

Students engage in activities which develop strategic thinking and tactical knowledge to improve individual and team performance in games.

Students will be required to work in their team environment to develop a tactical response to the games set for them.

1. The last player in line runs straight to the first player, and weaves around him or her and the second player back to his or her place.

2. The bean bag is passed from one to another until all have woven in and out and back to position.

3. The team finishing first wins.4. Any uneven teams must opt for one player to weave twice before finishing.

Variations:Teams have to jump, hop, skip or side step as they weave through their team.Safety considerations:

1. Players must not run into each other when weaving.

1. Just as in baseball, a pitch may be a strike; a kick may be a foul; three strikes make an out; and three outs mean the kicking team must take to the field on defense.

Variations:

Carla Caminiti & Luke Murray

- Students- Cones- Direction

Weaving Relay:(Ethridge Hunt, 2005)From Japan - Asia

1. Players stand in two lines 3 m apart, facing each other, players arm's distance apart.

2. On go first player in the line with bean bag in hand turns to face their team.3. The player weaves in and out until the end of the line and runs straight

back into their starting position.4. The bean bag is passed to the second player who weaves in and out to

the end of the line and runs back to face the first player in line and then weaves around his or her and back to place.

5. The bean bag is passed to the next player who weaves to the end of the line.

Key:

6. The playing field is clear of objects that could trip players.7. Correct footwear and clothing is used in class.8. Team members must stay the 3m distance apart.

Kick ball: (Waka, 2010) From the USA - North America1. Kickball is similar to baseball.2. Opposing teams play off on a field with three bases and a home plate.3. The fielding team’s pitcher throws an inflated, rubber ball to the kicking

team's players, who try to kick the ball, and then run around the bases.4. A fielder can get a runner out by reaching a base first, with the ball in

hand, or by throwing the ball directly at the runner and hitting him with it.5. The runner may not catch or touch the ball.

1. The playing field is clear of objects that could trip players.2. Correct footwear and clothing is used in class.3. The ball must be thrown at the runners below the neck and above the

knees.4. Fielding students cannot block the running path of the runners.5. Running team members must sit 2m away from the home plate.

Crab soccer: (Ward, n.d)Unusual game

1. Divide class into two teams and decide on what side of the court each team will be shooting.

2. Sit on your bottom with your feet flat on the floor. Place both of your hands palms downward with fingers facing outward next to you on the ground. Lift your body up and walk on your hands and feet like a crab.

3. Stay in this position; each team tries to kick the ball into their goal.4. Make a note of each goal the team scores.

Variation:1. Once in teams line up opposite each other and allocate each team member a

number.2. Call out individual numbers to go and crab soccer the ball and try to get a

goal for their team.3. You can call more than one number at once for a harder variation of this

game.4. The ball has to be passed to 4 people including girls 5. Make playing area smaller to make it easier.6. Make playing area larger to make game harder.

Tandem Tag:

(Etheridge Hunt, 2005)

From England – Europe

1. 4 couples are selected as taggers & given a base in each corner of the gym indicated by a hula hoop.

2. Each couple is provided with different colour bands. The couple wears one each and the left over bands are placed in their hula hoop.

3. The tagging couples each have a ball and the rest of the students are free to run in the playing area.

4. The couples must pass the ball to one another and try to tag the players by touching them with their ball (not throwing at them).

5. Once a player is tagged they go and stand in the colour base of the couple who tagged them (eg red base).

6. Once everyone is tagged, colour who tagged the most wins.

Variations: Once a player is tagged, they put on the same colour band and join the

taggers by helping to tag more players. This aids in maximising participation of the students

Fielding Race:

(Etheridge Hunt, 2005)

From England - Europe

1. The students are divided into 4-5 teams and stand at one end of the gym area, each team in a single file line with their leader (the front player) standing on a line.

2. Each team has a ball and at a signal, the first player in each team bowls his ball forward with enough force to make it cross the goal line several feet away.

3. As soon as each player releases the ball, he or she runs after it, picks it up after it goes beyond the goal line, turns and runs back to his or her team.

4. They give the ball to the next player and go to the end of the line.5. The next player does the same.6. The play continues until the leader, receiving the ball from the last

Organisation:

Class is divided into 2 teams. Each player has one stick with a basket on the end to carry the ball (called the

towa).  Like lacrosse, the object of the game is to throw the ball into the goal using your sticks.

To move the ball around you can run with it or pass it to a team mate. Each player must defend at least 2 metre away from the person throwing the

ball. After each goal, the ball is brought back to midfield and given to the opposing

team who did not score. At the end of the game the team with the most points wins.

Equipment:

Lacrosse sticks for every person in class. ball colour bands cones for boundaries

Safety considerations:

Make sure one team at time gets equipment to avoid student getting hit with lacrosse sticks.

Blindfold horse race

Organisation:

You take the class and break it up into pairs of two.  One of the two team members has to wear a blindfold covering their eyes.

The blindfolded person gets down on the ground like a horse.  The other team member sits on the ‘horse’.

The ‘rider’ has to direct the ‘horse’ around the obstacle course without talking.  They rider does this by pulling on the ‘horse's’ ears.

If the horse runs into something it has to stop and whine before starting again.  The object is to finish the obstacle course in the shortest time.

Equipment:

Keentan

Organisation:

Teams of 4-8 players When this game is played in teams the ball is thrown from one player to another player of the

same team. The players of the opposing team attempt to intercept the ball while they are off the ground.

The ball is only gained if it is caught while the defender is in the air. If the ball is dropped or knocked to the ground by a player attempting to catch it, the other

team gains possession. A change of possession also occurs when a thrown ball falls to the ground untouched.

No physical contact is allowed. Players cannot stop opposing players from moving around the area — no interference is

allowed. Passes must be a minimum of 3 metres. The player with the ball can run up to 5m before they must pass. This player cannot be obstructed while passing the ball. The defender must be at least 1 metre away.

Variations: After catching the ball a player may pivot on one foot only (as in netball). All players must be in the air (two feet off the ground) to throw and catch the ball. Players

jump to catch the ball and jump to pass the ball.

Equipment: Netball/soft soccer ball Coloured tags Cones for boundaries

Safety considerations: Make sure all students are aware of other players. Passes not to hard or fast. No physical contact allowed

Unusual/Games from other Cultures Name: Gaelic

. DESCRIPTION

This game is played world-wide and was originally played in Ireland. Divide class into two even teams with an even gender mix. Have males line up

on one line and females’ line up on another then hand out a coloured band to every second person on each line.

Both teams spread out over the basketball court with one goalie at each end protecting the wall soccer goals.

The game begins with a jump ball within the basketball centre between two players, one from each team.

To score, a player can only shoot by kicking or striking as there is no throwing allowed.

Only the goalie is allowed within the semi-circle at each end in front of the goals.

To pass, a player can handball or bounce pass to another player. Once the ball is on the floor it can’t be picked up, it can only be kicked off the

floor. To maximise participation and cooperation the order of passing is boy-girl-

boy-girl. A player is fouled when the ball goes out of bounds, is picked up off the floor,

thrown or any defensive contact is made. Once fouled, the other team has the ball at the point on the basketball court where it occurred.

Team with the highest number of points wins the game.

VARIATIONS If the game is moving at a slow pace, the mixed gender passing can be

eliminated and passing can occur between any genders. The game can be played on a soccer field and with more players is class size is

large. If class size is large and there is no access to a larger playing field, the use of

Name1,

2, 3 Dragon .

DESCRIPTION This game

originated in China Played with 10 or more players who are lined up behind one another with both

their hands on the person’s shoulder who is in front of them. The person at the front of the line is the ‘head’ of the dragon and the person at

the end is the ‘tail’. The aim of the game is for the ‘head’ of the dragon to catch the ‘tail’ without

breaking the chain. The rest of the chain is to follow around and try to keep together. If the ‘head’ catches the ‘tail’ or the chain breaks, the ‘head’ goes to the end of

the line and becomes the ‘tail’ making the next person in line the ‘head’.

VARIATIONS Introduce a point system where each player who catches the ‘tail’ scores one

point. The player who is the ‘head’ remains the ‘head’ until the chain breaks and

adds up their score for how many times they caught the ‘tail’ during this time. In a large area having more than one dragon chasing at any time.

Name European Handball .

DESCRIPTION This game is originated from European countries such as Demark, Germany,

Sweden and Norway. There are two teams of 5 or more players, one team wearing coloured bands,

the other without. The game can be played on any open field or an indoor court such as a

basketball court. Each team has one goalie that protects their goal square, no other player is

allowed within the semi-circle in front of the goals. The remaining players spread out over the court. The game beings with a jump ball between two players within the centre of the

court. The game is played with a netball ball or any ball with similar size and weight. When a player receives the ball they have 3 seconds to pass, shoot or dribble.

They can only take 3 steps without dribbling then another 3 steps when dribbling.

To maximise participation and cooperation, the passing order must be mixed gender of boy-girl-boy-girl.

To score, the ball must be thrown into the goal, outside of the semi-circle. Once a team scores, the ball starts at that end in the hands of the non-scored team.

If ball goes out of bounds, more steps are taken or mixed gender is interrupted, the other team starts with ball at point of foul.

The winning team is the team who scores the most goals at the end of the game.

VARIATIONS With more players, the game can be played on a larger field. Eliminate mixed gender passing. Use a smaller ball to increase difficulty

EQUIPMENT One netball ball or ball that is similar in size and weight. Coloured bands for one team.
