The Elks Annual Halloween Party was this past Saturday night and as those of you who were there know, it was packed. We had approx 200 people that danced and screamed their way through the haunted house. There were SO many amazing costumes. I’m confident when I say that the Visalia Elks Lodge Halloween Party always has the best costumes. Thanks to all of you who came out to join in the fun. Looking forward to the 2019 party!

VAGABONDS TRAVELS

The Annual Halloween Rally was held October 25-28 at the lodge with 11 Vagabond rigs participating and several rigs of other lodge members taking advantage of a fun time close to home. Susan and Jim Garvin and helpers started the rally off with Jim’s chili beans and hot dogs Thursday evening. Friday was spent visiting, hand and foot card playing and story swapping topped off with pot luck Friday evening. Brunch was served Saturday morning and Susan’s hobo stew Saturday night. The rig decorating contest winners were Eric and Karla Bush for spookiest, Mariam and Scott Glidden for most original and Jennifer and Tim Cawley for traditional. It is always heartwarming to hear the kids excitement about the lights and decorations and, of course, the treats! Thanks to all who participated in the weekend activities. Speaking of activities, there is a rally planned for Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield from November 29 to December 3. Trail boss is Neville Buyense. Cost is $33/night. Reservation deadline is November 10. Call Neville at (559) 260-4286 and let him know your arrival and departure dates. Make your check payable to Visalia Elks Vagabond RV Club and send check to Susan Garvin, Vagabond Club Treasurer. Check your club roster for her address. The Vagabond Christmas Party is Friday, December 14. Cost is $10/person, open to paid Vagabond members only. Reservation deadline is November 26. To reserve your spot, call or text Ladean Pearce (559) 696-8449 and where to send your check for pre-payment for the dinner.

NO November RV Meeting due to fact the third Wednesday in November (November 21) falls the day before Thanksgiving. See you at Orange Grove RV Park or at the Christmas Party in December.

Until then, may you have a very Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends. Kathy and Frank Kelly SIC

Fun Facts that you might not know: Veterans’ Day - The 11th Hour of the 11th day of November, the 11th Month (from Idaho State Elks Assoc.)

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has always been at the forefront of supporting the nation's veterans. The order has a direct connection with Veterans' Day that is not commonly known.

Veterans' Day, Nov. 11, was originally known before World War II (and is still known in Europe) as Armistice Day. It commemorates the end of World War I, the "War to End All Wars."

When hostilities ceased in November of 1918, President Wilson gave the American Expeditionary Force Commander, General John "Black Jack" Pershing, full authority to set the date and time of the Armistice. Pershing was an active and enthusiastic Elk, and selected the 11th hour of the 11th day of November, the 11th month, as the effective time of the Armistice. This was Pershing's salute to the memory of those soldiers "Elks and non-Elks alike" who perished during the long and brutal conflict.

The hour of 11 p.m. continues to have a special significance to the Elks, as it is the time when, at any evening Elks event, all activity ceases and all members and guests rise while the chimes ring 11 times and the "Eleven O’Clock Toast" is given in recollection of deceased members.

In 1917, the BPOE organized and equipped the first two base hospitals in France, which were the predecessors of MASH units. In 1918, the order built a 700-bed hospital and donated it to the Federal Government, the first of what would become Veterans' Administration hospitals. The Elks built a spectacular memorial to America’s veterans in Chicago in 1926, and more recently donated $1.22 million to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The BPC The party crew that has been responsible for events like the past couple Halloween parties, New Year’s Eve, the Kentucky Derby Party and next week’s Robert Hall Wine Pairing dinner were told that they should come up with a name for their group at a party planning meeting. When searching the internet for more information on female elks, there was an article that came up that explained that female elks are practically bullet proof because they learn to outsmart hunters as they get older. That is how the BPC or Bullet Proof Crew name came about. A hard-working group of female elk members.

“At this time of year, we are reminded of how much we have to be thankful for. My wish for you this Thanksgiving is that you find yourself surrounded by those you love.” ~ Kate Summers
