Abstract Art Continuing the ‘Life’ theme this week we will look at abstract art and have a go at creating animals or people using shapes only.

So what is abstract art? Abstract art is modern art which does not represent images of our everyday world. It has colour, lines and shapes (form), but they are not intended to represent objects or things in the way that we actually see them!

You will need:

Instructions:

Step 1. Take a look at the examples. What shapes can you see in the pictures? See how many circles, squares, rectangles and triangles you can see. Can you find any other shapes? Step 2. Think about what element of ‘life’ you want to draw. Will it be a human or an animal? Step 3. Using different shapes, draw out your design. Remember the key word is abstract so it doesn’t ‘need’ to look like what it is supposed to. It’s about what the artist (you) can see. Step 4. Time to add some colour. It doesn’t matter if you use a different colour for what it should actually be – this is what makes it abstract!

Things to remember when making abstract art… ● choose strong shapes ● get up close ● use colour to grab attention ● use repeating patterns ● use lines and curves Have fun!

-a beach that was clear yesterday at 5pm

might be completely covered in sea at the

same time today. A beach can seem like a

huge playground but the tide can come in

very quick!

-is the body's response to being suddenly

immersed into cold water of around 15°C

or lower, this will seriously affect your

breathing and capability to move.

-are strong currents running out to sea,

which can quickly drag people and debris

away from the shallows of the shoreline

and out into deep water.

Talk to someone at home about what you think the word fertilisation means.

Watch this clip about fertilisation:

Can you have a chat with someone about what you have seen? What have you learnt that is new?

Below are some statements to describe fertilisation. Write or cut them out and put them in the right order, then make a comic strip of pictures to go with each sentence so that it tells the story of how fertilisation happens.

Consumer Rights What do these 2 words mean? Let’s have a look… Consumer is a person who purchases goods or services for personal use. Rights is the legal entitlement that supports the consumer.

Introduction When you buy something, the law gives you certain rights that protect you if its faulty. When you buy an item from a shop or online the law says it must be: ● satisfactory quality and to last for an expected time ● fit for purpose ● as described – matches the description on the packaging or what you have been told. If an item doesn’t meet any of these rights you will usually have the right to a ● repair ● replacement ● refund These rights apply to most items that you buy from a shop. To return an item you will need to have proof of purchase – this is usually the receipt you are given but may also include a bank statement. If you receive a present and it contains a gift receipt your legal rights are a little different. You cannot return the item for a cash refund but stores will allow an exchange or a credit note. All shops have different return policy’s that include the length of time that you have to return an item. These details are usually on the receipt but it can vary between 7 days and up to 30 days.

**After reading each of the scenarios look back at the introduction and decide why you might be entitled to a refund or replacement. ** Scenario 1 You have bought a pair of new Converse. When you get home you notice the sole has come unstuck. You have your receipt and it has been 10 days since you bought them. What should you do? Scenario 2 You have purchased a new iPad on the internet. When you open the packaging, it is an iPad copy and not genuine although it does not say this on the advert. What do you do? Scenario 3 You have brought a new jumper and have worn it a couple of times. After washing you notice that the seam on the arm has come un-done and there is a hole. What should you do? Scenario 4 You are out shopping but need to get home. You really like a pair of jeans so you buy them and think they will be okay. When you get home, they are too big and do not fit you! What should you do? Scenario 5 It is your birthday and you receive a top from a family member. You don’t like it but they have given you the gift receipt. What should you do?

Answers 1. You can have refund if the item you bought is then damaged or broken. It is not fit for purpose or has not lasted an expected amount of time.

2. If the item is faulty it is not fit for purpose and you are entitled to a refund. 3. Most shops will have a time limit on how long you have to take something back. If you go over this time limit they do not have to issue a refund. 4. You can receive a refund on something if it doesn’t fit, you have changed your mind or it is not wanted. Just make sure you have your receipt as proof of purchase and it is within the time limit for a refund or an exchange of the shop.

5. When you have a git receipt you are entitled to an exchange or credit note but not a cash refund.

Middle distance running Equipment: stopwatch, water bottle, internet/ smart phone (with maps) – if you have one. Don’t worry if not. Instructions:

1. Before you set off, it is a good idea to plan a route (1-3km) i.e. around the block or around your nearest park. You can use this website to help https://www.plotaroute.com/routeplanner

2. Once you have planned your route you need to warm up and make sure you have a water bottle you can carry with you.

3. From the start point , start the stopwatch and begin running. You can get a parent or sibling to time you.

4. Following your route try and pace yourself (don’t go to fast, you should be able to talk while you run)

5. On completion of the route stop the stopwatch and record the time. 6. Have 3 attempts over the week – try and beat your PB each day.

Alternatives: To make it easier – Fast walk the route or Jog then walk then jog again, using landmarks eg lampposts) to help you know when to change. To make it harder – Challenge yourself to run faster for short sections of the route eg. between lampposts or one side of the park.
