SPAS

Water Baby at Elounda Beach, CretePosted by Jo Gardner on 10th June 2014

At Crete’s Elounda Beach Hotel, hydrotherapy isconsidered the best preparation for slimming and anti-ageing treatments.

Elounda Beach’s Espace Vitalite Chenot is no ordinary spa.Predominantly a medi-spa with its own dietic department(creating low calorie, high energy meals for guests), theThalaspa mimics the ancient Chinese belief that slimmingand anti-ageing treatments cannot work if a person’s‘meridian’ is out of balance.

Before commencing a programme, all guests are advised toundergo a hydro-energetic cure, a one-hour combinationtreatment designed to restore the proper circulation ofliquids to the body in three steps: hydro-aromatherapy,phyto-mud therapy and hydro-jet/shower.

Sporting an extremely unflattering pair of paper knickers,I’m led into a white, peaceful room where a bubbling bathawaits. It’s not a Jacuzzi, I’m told, but a series of jets designedto ‘eliminate toxins and fats infiltrated into the tissues bytoning muscles and tendons to protect against damagecaused by ageing’. To me it’s a lovely bubble bath with anenviable view of the sea and mountains.

The lights are dimmed as I step into the warm water, gentlejets working their way around my body for the next twentyminutes – each new ‘direction’ met with a change of watercolour. It’s all over too fast.

Back in my robe, I’m led into a second room where warmmud is painted all over my body while I sit on a on a bed.Once ‘mudded up’, I’m wrapped in several layers – cling film;several towels; a thick, plastic sheet – and lowered onto whatI can only assume is a warm waterbed.

This twenty minutes seems a little long, as — ten minutes in— my ear starts to itch and as I’m wrapped up like amummy, I’m unable to move.

By the time I enter the third room, I realise why the spa is sobig, this time I’m in a massive wet room with no windows.I’m told to hold onto the silver bars at the back of the roomwhile a lady directs warm water jets at me for the dualpurpose of removing the mud while invigorating blood flow. The jets are powerful and, while not painful, the experienceis a little odd.

When the warm water suddenly turns icy cold I’m about toprotest when the treatment ends, and I’m shown into therelaxation area to drink cold liquorice tea and marvel at myskin, which is now as smooth as a baby’s bum.

A lover’s guide to...

WHERE TO STAYYou don’t need to travel halfway around the world to find a dreamy beach destination; Crete is a mere three-hour flight. Less than an hour’s drive from Heraklion airport lies the picturesque fishing village of Elounda, and the place to check into for your five-star fix is Elounda Beach. Think of everything you might love about Greece and add a peaceful villa and exclusive beaches to boot. You’ll find a dazzling backdrop of iconic white-washed buildings combined with more contemporary, glass-fronted structures, but it’ll be the warm Cretan welcome which will really make you feel like you’ve truly arrived. Kick back in your own Island Villa where many newlyweds emerge only to enjoy a dip in the ocean, which is just a few steps away. The open-plan space has everything you need, including a walk-in closet and gym. After a day of laps in your private pool, pour yourselves a glass of something chilled and enjoy the large bathtub which has blissful sea views. Or, if you’re feeling flush, treat yourselves to one of the super-sumptuous Yachting Club suites.

Sand & Honey

If the cutting-edge design and high-tech facilities (we’re talking leather ceilings, video projectors on the walls and retractable skylight) don’t sell it to you, the wooden sun decks and heated outdoor infinity pool certainly will. The wonderful thing about Elounda Beach’s village-style set-up is that you’ll find a restaurant at every turn. Whether you enjoy sushi at the glittering Blue Lagoon or homemade Cretan dishes at Kafenion, one thing’s for sure; this is island living.

WHAT TO DO1) Take a short taxi ride to bustling Nikolaos, on Mirabelo Bay, and meander through the streets for cafés, bars and shops offering everything from fabrics to local delicacies.2) The spa at Elounda Beach offers a full range of treatments. Have a relaxing massage on the day of arrival to start as you mean to go on. 3) Elounda Beach’s waterfront location makes it the perfect place to set sail on a fishing trip or traditional kaiki boat excursion. Visit Spinalonga Island for beautiful views and snorkeling. 4) Guests at Elounda Beach also get to enjoy the facilities of sister hotel Elounda Bay Palace. Embrace your sporting spirit with a range of watersports, including waterskiing, windsurfing and scuba diving. W

WANT NOTHING BUT A STRETCH OF CLEAR, BLUE WATER, but don’t fancy being stuck on a yacht all day? Crete’s Elounda Beach Hotel has the solution for all land-lovers, with its eight glorious Yachting Club Villas (above right), which are luxurious enough to keep even Roman Abramovich happy.

As you’d expect, it’s all very nautical glam – polished furniture, teakwood flooring, leather-coated ceilings, and an enormous private ‘deck’ for easy-peasy sea access. All the Love Boat fun with none of the sea-sickness. Other treats – such as a hydro-massage swimming pool, a temperature-controlled mattress, a movie theatre with on-demand screenings, and electronic sliding doors – add to the cool vibe.

But there’s also plenty to tempt you away from your heavenly hideaway – sublime spa treatments along with watersports and excursions to

nearby islands like Spinalonga or Agios Nikolaos – in fact, with your butler-on-call, your wish is their command. Expect to tick off some simple pleasures, too – strolling hand-in-hand along the private beaches, exploring hidden coves, and candlelit dinners for two under the stars. No meal is complete, though, without a trip to Elounda’s awesome wine cellar to ‘um’ and ‘ah’ over which of its 1,150 wine varieties you’ll be sampling come evening. Then, after dinner (check out Thalassa, the hotel’s glamorous seafood restaurant) flit over to Veghera for cocktails that are so good, they’re rude. Get here before Kate Moss, Rihanna and the other A-list yacht-lovers discover it. ● A Yachting Club Villa costs from £1,597 a night, B&B (eloundabeach.gr)

starqualityBoeing and Bigelow Aerospace unveil their vision for commercial space travel

This concept, based on the seven-person CST-100 capsule being developed for NASA, was designed for paying, non-professional space tourists. As such, it includes features such as a large viewing space, large displays for communication and entertainment, and wireless internet for email, social media and entertainment.

The seats are individually mounted and collapsible to aid mobility, while the simplified interior linings are finished with soft-touch surfaces. Other features designed with comfort in mind include secure stowage; a “deployable privacy area that addresses the modesty needs of passengers and crew”; and customizable space suits.

Boeing has also appropriated its Sky Interior mood-lighting, which was originally developed for the Boeing 737 airliner. “Boeing’s teams have been designing award-winning and innovative interiors for our aircraft since the dawn of commercial aviation,” says Rachelle Ornan, regional director of sales and marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Designing the next-generation interior for commercial space is a natural progression. A familiar daytime blue sky scene helps passengers maintain their connection with Earth.”

The XchangE autonomous car concept by Rinspeed (with an interior developed by Strähle+Hess) showcases what driverless cars could be like. The seats can be arranged in more than 20 ways.
