Elthorne Park High School Newsletter
Issue 795 14th December 2017
Message from Headteacher Dear Parents, Another year has passed very quickly and it has, as ever, been every eventful. We have had another incredibly successful year with outstanding examination results, multiple sporting successes and musical and dramatic triumphs. We have settled into our new building and welcomed expanded cohorts of Year 7 and Year 12 students. Our Open Evenings in the new facilities were incredibly well attended and the positive atmosphere has translated into record numbers applying to Year 7 and the Sixth form for next September. I’m sure you are aware that London is one of the highest performing regions in the UK and Elthorne Park is again in the top 50 comprehensive (i.e. mixed sex, non-religious, non-Grammar) schools in London. We are also a top 150 school for attainment nationally. In the Sixth form our A level, Applied and Technical vocational course results are again in the top 3 in the borough! All students took the new, more-academic GCSEs in English and Mathematics last Summer and our investment in teacher expertise paid off with Grade 5+ percentages nearly 20% above expected national averages! For these reasons and more we were selected as an example of excellent practice and featured in the 2017 Parliamentary Review! Unfortunately, I think we’ve had our annual snow ration for the year already an won’t see a white Christmas Day but, nonetheless, I wish you all a wonderful, happy and peaceful Christmas. I look forward to welcoming all students back on Thursday 4th January, eager and ready to learn! Mr Wong, Headteacher

Year 7 Reading Group Trip to Waterstones Last Thursday, one of our Year 7 reading groups visited Waterstones in Ealing to browse and buy some new reading resources. They were treated to a tour of the bookshop and a talk about new children's books in store and afterwards they chose a book to read together as a group in school as well as one for each of them. They also completed a treasure hunt activity where they had to work in teams to find different items located throughout the store. Their enthusiasm and excitement continued as they came back to school to start reading their new books straight away! Ms Silani, Ms Martino and Ms Da Silva
The Scholastic Book Fair comes to EPHS!
Last week, we ran a book fair in the library at break and lunchtimes and at the Christmas Performing Arts Festival. It was the first time we've held one in the new library and it was great to see so many students browsing and buying books over the whole week. There was a really diverse selection of books on offer for all abilities, interests and ages and the feedback from students was that there was something for everyone. The student librarians volunteered to help to run the fair, recommending books, taking payments and keeping a running record of what they sold. They set a book fair goal of £500 and we're pleased to say we reached it with sales of over £700 by Friday. This means we will have £350 to spend on some really great new books for the school library! A big thank you to all parents and students who supported it. We look forward to holding another fair in the Summer term which we hope will inspire some great summer holiday reading! Ms Martino, Librarian
Reader of the Week Caitlin Wood (7O)

Foodbank for vulnerable families during the Christmas holidays With the school Christmas holidays fast approaching, we have been reminded that for some families the school holidays can be a financially challenging time, particularly those with multiple children. Ealing Foodbank and the School partnerships & enrichment team (SP&T) have spoken about the best way to support our most vulnerable families during this time. Following a successful pilot during the summer holidays, Ealing Food Bank has widened the criteria to include Free School Meals, Ever 6 pupils and any families identified as financially vulnerable that may not be eligible for FSM. If you feel that the holiday period will significantly impact your ability to provide sufficient food for your family please email the school on [email protected]. Ms Patel, Finance Office
