Funding to provide extra support for your child in school The Enhanced Pupil Premium provides extra funding to state-funded schools to give additional support to students from Reception through to Year 11 who have either been adopted from care or left care following the granting of a Special Guardianship, Residence or Child Arrangement Order. The Enhanced Pupil Premium has been extended to include all children who were previously in care and then either adopted or made subject to one of the orders above. Your child may be eligible for this funding. The funding is paid to schools so that they can invest in specific support measures to address any issues that may be preventing your child from reaching their potential. Please contact me on 020 8566 1166 x 1004 if you have any queries or wish to record your child as eligi-ble. Further information can be found at http://www.adoptionuk.org/education/pupil-premium Mrs Marr

Year 11 History Trip The History Department is very pleased to announce that the Year 11 GCSE Histo-rians will be attending a visit to the Imperial War Museum to support their studies and will provide extremely useful knowledge for the GCSE Paper 3: Britain: 1903-28 War and the Transformation of British Society. There are two trips running: Monday 17th October - Ms Clark and Ms Kular's classes Tuesday 18th October - Mr Phippard's class. We would be very grateful if the permission slips could be signed and returned to the student's history teacher as soon as possible. Please ensure that you have completed an updated annual consent and medical SVO form for 2016 to 2017 otherwise your child will not be able to go on the trip. The SVO forms can be downloaded from the school's website. KS4 GCSE Historians The History Department provides every GCSE History student with a textbook to support their studies. We would be very grateful if parents/carers would sign the textbook letters sent home via the students and return these to the student's his-tory teacher as soon as possible so that we can issue the textbooks. Purchasing Food in the Dining Hall Please ensure that your child has enough money on their account to pay for the food they purchase in the canteen as the school does not offer credit. Ms Williams Exam Resits Summer 2017 If you are considering resitting any examinations in the summer 2017 series, please contact the Exams Officer after 1st December 2016. Please note that you may be required to pay the entry fees.

Word of the Week - ANOMALY An anomaly is something which is abnormal or differs from the common rule.

Example of use: 1. The test result was an anomaly; it could not be explained

2. It is an anomaly that those who produced the wealth were the poorest.

English GCSE Activities in Year 11 Tutor Time We are pleased to let you know that our year 11 student will be doing a reading activity in registration every Thursday which is directly linked to their English GCSE exam. Students will receive an extract on which they will answer questions. The questions are all similar to those which they might see in the exam. We will also include the activity in the news-letter to enable parents to understand what the examination entails and how they can support their children. The purpose of this activity is to enable students to practise their reading skills, become familiar with types of questions that they will receive in the examination and be exposed to more challenging texts. The first half term will focus on novel openings and how they are structured to engage readers and introduce main characters and narrators. Preparing for English GCSE: Improving Our Reading Skills George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1948, imagining a dystopian* world where the main character Winston Smith struggles with the oppressive regime in Oceania- a place where every human action is watched and scrutinised by a mythical being- BIG BROTHER and freedom of thought and expression are forbidden. Here is the opening of the novel and it features one of the most famous opening lines in modern Literature. *Dystopian- an imagined place or society where everything is unpleasant or bad and people are oppressed.

__________________________ 1984

Part One It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly though the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it, a coloured poster too large for indoor display had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, oppo-site the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous eyes gazed down from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.

Responding to the Text

First Responses- discuss these questions with your partner. What is the passage about? What hints does it give about what is to follow? What impression is created of the mood and atmosphere at the start of the novel?

Close Reading List four things which reveal that the novel is set in a dystopian world. 1.______________________________________________________ 2.______________________________________________________ 3.______________________________________________________ 4.______________________________________________________ C) Analysis of the whole source This text is from the opening of a novel. How has the writer structured the text to interest you as a reader? Write down at one or two ideas for each bullet point: What the writer focuses your attention on at the beginning How the writer presents the main character Any other structural features that interest you.

If so, there will be a short meeting in the Hall next Wednesday (21th September) at 3.15pm. All students interest-ed MUST attend and we expect to be finished before 4pm. This year’s musical relies on a strong chorus, as well as having an extensive list of named characters suitable for all year groups. We will be looking for talented and committed actors, singers, dancers and musicians. We strongly believe that everyone with the drive to perform should get the opportunity to develop their skills and as such all students who sign up on Tuesday are given a place in the chorus. During these rehearsals we are looking for students with commit-ment, enthusiasm and potential. Further notices regarding auditions and rehearsals will be posted on the door of N-Block so please ensure you are check-ing this regularly. See your Music or Drama teacher if you have any questions.
