Notes:Assuming continuous numbering of takes regardless of songs on this session. The reason is unknown, but mayhave something to do with MGM paying for a soundtrack session recorded in Nashville.

The released, spliced master of So Close, Yet So Far may be a little too slow. It is edited like this:0:00 - 1:33: Take 3 (C2044)1:33 - 3:02: Take 4 (C2045) ("I reach out for you...")

The MGM soundtrack reveals dry vocals recorded in RCA Studio B, Nashville (the studio with "naturalecho"). The added, light echo on the original RCA release is very different from BMG's 90's remaster onDouble Features. Again, instruments, clarity and dynamic range are great on BMG's remix from 3-track. Bassand vocal presence suffer more when listening through headphones than speakers. Do they use micro-delay offrequencies in combination with digital echo/reverb? Anyway, the Double Features will always sound 1990'sand not 1960's.

  • Overdub Session for RCA, March 18, 1965Studio : RCA Studio B, Nashville, TennesseeProducer : Chet AtkinsEngineer : Bill Vandervort

    Tomorrow Night (overdub) SPA4 2331 March 18 (Thu.)overdub (M) 2:40 Overdub of F2WB 8115 recorded in 1954 Elvis for Everybody CD""slowed down M 2:53 Original master slowed down ~8% Elvis for Everybody LP""/

Musicians:Guitar : Chet AtkinsGuitar : Grady MartinGuitar, Harmonica : Charlie McCoyBass : Henry StrzeleckiDrums : Buddy HarmanBackup Vocals : The Anita Kerr Singers: Anita Kerr, Dorothy Dillard, Louis Nunloy and William Wright

Notes:Tomorrow Night, originally recorded at SUN in August or September 1954, was slowed down about 8%, thustransposing it a half step down, for the original release on Elvis for Everybody in 1965. The reason was surelyto match the vocals with Presley's of 1965. Whether the pitch adjustment was done before or after theinstrumental or background vocal overdubs is not known. The background vocals may sound slowed down aswell, but the guitar work sound equally good at both speeds. Opinions are welcome of course. BMG's 1990CD release of the same album has this overdub running at the original Sun pitch, but again, it's hard to tell ifthe originally slowed down master was speeded up this time or if it is how the master sounded before sloweddown.

The movie version of A House of Sand is an edited composite of HOV, H1V and probably H2V.

The sources "Paradise Hawaiian Style Sessions CD 1 & 2" refer to the CD's TCB 96301 & 96302. These werepreviously issued on 3 LP's that weren't verified, but assumed to be mastered from an identical source (Xgeneration cassette with high-end loss, noise and speed/pitch between 2-6% too fast.)

The Flashback CD/Laurel LP "Hawaii USA" is mastered from a better source, but the noise reduction is heavyand there is a possible (deliberate) reduction of midrange frequencies. The pitch is surprisingly accuratecompared to other bootlegs.

BMG did a good remastering job on the 1994 Double Features version of this soundtrack, mainly because thedigital echo was kept sparse with much less of the usual vocal artifacts as result. The ambience was kept too, even on quiet songs.

The "Out in Hollywood" outtake of This Is My Heaven (take 4) comes with artificial clarity ruining vocalpresence, a 10 ms delay of two instrumental tracks and clipped samples sacrificed in order to raise the overall

  • presence, a 10 ms delay of two instrumental tracks and clipped samples sacrificed in order to raise the overallamplitude without adding dynamic compression. Absolutely horrible, but probably a good example of what theSurround-generation (with 6 ears) would refer to as good sound.

  • Overdub Session for RCA?, October 10?, 1965?Studio : RCA Studio, New York, New York?Producer : -Engineer : Ed Begley

    Santa Lucia (overdub) SPA1 6893 October 10? (Sun.)overdub (M) 2:23 Overdub of 2007-03 UN

    Santa Lucia (overdub) SPA1 6898 (sic) October 10? (Sun.)overdub (M?) 2:23? Overdub of 2007-03 UN

Musicians:Guitar : Al CaiolaGuitar, Harmonica : Dominic Contese

Notes:This overdub session of Santa Lucia (2007-03, originally recorded in 1963) was first listed in Tunzi's ElvisSessions II and later confirmed by Ernst Jorgensen, so there can be no doubt that it did take place. The datecombined with the second matrix number is a mystery though. The number SPA1 6898 is identical to that ofthe usual master, first released on "Elvis for Everyone". The problem is that the album was released in July1965 and that this matrix number should have been assigned by then. The Viva Las Vegas soundtrack versionseems to have the same guitar/harmonica parts as the released master, but it's hard to tell. So one guess is thatthere is something wrong with the information of the number SPA1 6898 being reused in October 1965.Another theory is that the overdub session may have taken place earlier than October, that this SPA1 6898 isthe released master and that it was overdubbed in the first place. It is strange if the song was overdubbed 3months after release and did the union allow studio musicians to work on a Sunday? It's even possible that thetrue date is October 10, 1963 (Thursday, would fit, the NY studio would not), although the numbers weren'tassigned until 1965. Jorgensen lists the same musicians as overdubbed on the 1963 session. The fourth digit '1'is unique and therefore difficult to solve.

Notes:This is one of the rare occasions where the Jordanaires appear in the left channel on the final 2-channel mix.The position of the Jordanaires was preseved by BMG on the Double Features mix, but not on any of theouttakes.

The CD "Spin-in...Spinout" (LSD 1966) is the primary source choice for about half of this session in spite ofhiss and possible high-end raise+rough notch filter to compensate. The Famous Groove 2-CD "The CompleteSpinout Session" (FG 2331) is arguably the best source for the rest of the session with completely dry vocals, hiss, possible mid-frequency drop, generation loss and possibly lacking one of the original 3 channels."Celluloid Rock vol. 2" (Cool Romeo) has a binaural mix with raised mid-range, high-end loss and digitalecho on the other hand. Apart from that, it may be of a better analog generation than the Famous Grooverelease.

The sound of BMG's Double Features is good in spite of a high-end filter from 11 kHz and above. "Out inHollywood"(FTD) has the best frequency response, but also more of that dreadful digital delay and possibleclarity improvements. "Collectors Gold" is the worst of them all with tons of cheap echo; they didn't have aclue on what to do with dry outtakes in 1991.

  • Notes:On the 1999 Japanese paper sleeve CD (BVCM-3702) and the first regular CD release of "How Great ThouArt" the original two-channel album masters were used. Generation loss is more than compensated for by thefull ambience and natural sounding vocals. Neither release has noise reduction. The original RCA/BMG CDruns too slow (~2%) while this has been corrected on the Japanese CD. Overall the Japanese CD isnormalized to 0 dB (max. amplitude) or even subjected to unnecessary hard limiting, especially noticeable onloud songs such as So High. It may still be the best choice in terms of sound.

BMG's "Amazing Grace" and "Peace in the Valley" are remastered/remixed from the original multi-channelbackup tapes and both have too much noise reduction and artificial sounding vocals due to overuse oftasteless clarity improvement products, although the source and generation as such is better than the originalalbum masters used previously. The more recent "Peace in the Valley" has added high-end noise thatcontinues after the songs are finished, but also slightly improved high-end compared to "Amazing Grace".The fact that noise can be identified as added afterwards suggests that the record company is aware of someof the problems with these remasters. Avoid releases derived from this bad early 1990's attempt that isreleased over and over again. Unfortunately they will need to go back to the tapes again to get it right, unlessthe basic transfer was kept somewhere.

6 drum beats of the intro of Down in the Alley were missing on the 60's Box. When rectified on the CD"Tomorrow Is a Long Time", a remastered intro with better ambience was spliced onto the 60's Box masterrather than remastering the entire song again. It is possible that the intro was cut from the multichannel tapesin the first place.

From this session BMG's remasters as released on the 60's Box and "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" are moreconservative and far better than "Amazing Grace"/"Peace in the Valley". However, Love Letters has betterambience on "From the Heart" or the first CD version of "Gold Records volume 4". On later BMG releasessuch as the "60's Box" and "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" this sounds a bit dull and flat. The best source of thismaster may be the reel-to-reel "Golden Records vol.3 & 4" (ST 713-P-DP), but it would take a Dolby A (B?)decoder to find out for sure.

The long lost stereo master of Come What May was severely and audibly clipped when finally released onthe BMG/FTD CD "Long Lonely Highway". The same goes for the alternate Fools Fall in Love and By andBy. The latter also suffers from DAT jitter (at 1:32). Similar jitter can be found on the CD "Come What May"(Come What May take 1, at 0:52-0:53 of track 1) implying a similar source in spite of being released inmono...

The arrangements on If Every DayWas Like Christmas are however so different that it's not impossible that Red's version was recorded at adifferent session. The guide vocals are audibly bleeding on the final masters by the way. A fact that could beconsidered when comparing with the criticism of bleeding vocal tracks and the proficiency of the M.G.MSoundstage engineers later the same month.

    Musicians:

Notes:Indescribably Blue has better ambience on the first CD version of "Gold Records volume 4" than on theBMG remaster. A very good source of this master is the reel-to-reel "Golden Records vol.3 & 4" (ST 713-P-DP).

The bootlegged mono outtakes Indescribably Blue and I'll Remember You as released on "There's AlwaysMe" vol. 2 and "Complete Spinout Sessions" are flawed with a really bad, dynamically processed high-endproducing a pulsating noise. ("There's Always Me" vol.2 has to be one of the most overrated "bootlegs" interms of sound quality. The whole thing sounds as if it was recorded with poorly calibrated dbx and playedback without.)

The undubbed If Every Day Was Like Christmas as released on "Memories of Christmas" actually has thevocals of master take 2, although they can't be synchronized with the master. On average, this undubbedversion runs a little more than 0.5% too slow and has a different piano intro that is played an octave lower. The piano intro of bootlegged take 1 is however the same as on the RCA/BMG master so it seems somethinghappened during remixing of the version on "Memories of Christmas".

To solve sequence of the the bootlegged I'll Remember You fragments, the track on "The Complete SpinoutSessions" was pitch-adjusted (101.254% stretch) to match BMG's remaster which was considered reference. With the obvious possibility of misidentification of takes 1 and 3, guessed sequence then becomes:

Notes:The listed sequence of tracks/songs recorded the night between June 28-29 may not be completely accurate, but this is the way the order is presented in Jorgensen's "A Life in Music" and there are very few flaws ofsimilar nature in that book overall. Elvis arrived late and at least 2001 City by Night (track) had been recordedprior to his arriving. It may seem unlikely that the (unused) 2005 Long Legged Girl (track) would have beenrecorded after three live recordings with vocals since they had wasted studio time. Family circumstances mayexplain it though so the track order will be kept on this page until the session logs become accessible.(According to Tunzi's "Elvis Sessions II" all tracks had been recorded before Elvis arrived.)

The MGM session tapes were reported lost before BMG changed policy on the subject. BMG's 4-track tape

  • must have been used as source for "Celluloid Rock" volume 2 and it is therefore likely that the alternate ThereIs So Much World to See (2003-10) never was on the tape turned over to RCA and only exists on acetate. Update: Tape now acquired by BMG and released on the FTD CD "Silver Screen Stereo".

Notes:Three very different sources of the Double Trouble masters have been released over the years. A very basicmix with dry vocals intact can be found on "Celluloid Rock" volume 2. Unfortunately noise, ambience andhigh-end has been removed so this is of little use to verify the confirmed noise problem on this session. Theharmony vocal overdub of Could I Fall in Love? was poorly recorded in the first place without a doubt, but todrown that channel in a canyon of digital echo and do final processing "under water", as they did on "DoubleFeatures", only makes things worse. There once was reason to complain over the originally released RCA 2-track recordings because of the high noise level, lack of high-end, tube artifacts and the slightly overdonecompression, especially on the low frequencies. All of these flaws are subjectively acceptable compared toBMG's synthetical vocals. (RCA's It Won't Be Long may be an exception where the compressed bass simply isunbearable.)

Long Legged Girl was remixed for the 1970 "Almost in Love" album. The remixed version has less echo andcompression, but the mix/balance isn't very good with vocals being to much to the left. However the soundquality and dynamic range was better than the original release. The drum intro was cut on Double Features and"Celluloid Rock" so it probably is missing on the 4-track tapes.

A wild guess is that record versions of other songs were overdubbed after the originalsession as well.

Notes:The original 2-track masters of the 6 songs used in the movie were released on LP in Australia, New Zealandand Argentina. Again, poor digital echo on vocals plagues the Double Features release. She's a Machine is theonly song from this session that has been properly released on CD ("Flaming Star"/German club). The intro ofI'll Take Love was cut on some of the original mono and 2-track releases and even on "Celluloid Rock".

The movie version of The Love Machine is actually a different take with the same arrangements in differentorder. For instance: "who's next in line" is sung an octave higher the first time in the movie version instad ofthe last time as on the record version. It is interesting that the officially listed sloppy alternate "take 11" on"Double Features" is completely different from both the record and the movie versions. Perhaps this is an earlytake after all (i.e. mentioned take 4 or edited/announced take 5).

The implied vocals recorded on the songs Aches and Pains and Second Rate Street ('Elvis Sessions'/Tunzi)hardly refer to vocals by Elvis as his name is mentioned on the finished songs ("Elvis, Orch. and Jordanaires"),but not on these. A guess is that Aches and Pains (a.k.a. Go, Go, Jo) is the instrumental used in the movie rightafter the opening/title track. Other instrumental tracks used in the movie would fit with the listed tracks aswell.

Notes:On the CD "Movie Session Memories" (FG 973001), rip-off bootlegger "Famous Groove" spliced the intro ofHow Can You Lose What You Never Had? take 1 with the rest of take 3, calling it "take 2". There was a "take

  • 2" announcement only on BMG's "Collector's Gold" that it was appended to. Not only pathetic, but a waste oftime. All such home-spliced outtakes will be revealed eventually.

The movie version of Confidence is divided in two parts. The first part is an alternate vocal take and sung ahalfstep higher than the record version. This would nearly fit with officially listed "first verse, vocal overdub".Until clarified, these options are possible:__ 1. Movie version, part 1, is the rerecorded version. Record version unedited. (Primary guess)__ 2. Record version is a composite with first part rerecorded in a higher key.The "change of matrix numbers" should under all circumstances refer to the movie/record versions with UPA42753(recorded for RCA) being the record version and UPA3 8450(recorded for UA) referring to the movieversion or the first part of the movie version. (The second part of the movie version, with overdubbed children,is the same vocal take as the record version.)

(Reprise) may not be the correct version title for the short acoustic version of Clambake as released on DoubleFeatures and as denoted in the book 'A Life in Music'(Jorgensen). The second movie version is labelled"CLAMBAKE (Reprise)" in the sequencing list reproduced in the above mentioned 'A Life in Music'. Thissequencing list has all the songs in the order they were to appear in the movie. So this "reprise" version seemsto refer to the second (and complete) version in the movie which is the same vocal version as the recordversion. (The first movie version is just an edit of the master/record version.)

How the song Who Needs Money? was recorded may not be possible to derive. According to "A Life inMusic" Elvis only did a cue vocal overdub and an insert vocal overdub of a track. However, the rest of thevocals must have made it to the tape somehow. It is therefore likely that the "track" actually was recorded withlive vocals. Support to this theory is given by Tunzi's listed recording date of February 21, while Jorgensenmentions the track being recorded on February 22. This may be of interest since Elvis probably did not attendthe February 22 session. The insert vocal overdub could be the part that is on the record version and not the movie version, at timing1:45-2:00 of record version: "Making money...what do you want?". Omitted in the movie as well was the RayWalker line just before that, at 1:37-1:45 of record version: "When I go to bed at night...dollar bills and then Ifall asleep."The cue vocal overdub of Who Needs Money? either refers to the movie version or the record version as thelast line sung is different. Again, a guess will have to do. Since the ending of the movie version sounds a littlemessed up and since the record version has the last line sung by Elvis alone, it is not impossible that the cuevocal overdub refers to the record version.

Notes:The basic recording of Suppose features Elvis' voice and piano by Charlie Hodge. The exact date isunknown, but it is usually referred to as a home recording. A mono version of the basic recording with echowas released on RCA's "silver box". Apart from different mixes of the overdubbed version, a binauralversion of the basic recording with dry vocals was released on 'Celluloid Rock' volume 2. This version isnoice-reduced and has the piano track slighty leaking into the vocal channel. Still, the sound quality andfrequency response is better than on usual home recordings. It probably was recorded at home, but using aprofessional tape machine then. In 'Elvis Sessions II' Tunzi suggests that the rhythm track possibly had beenlaid down earlier in the studio (June 10, 1966) and this is still one possibility when judging from the sound ofthe binaural track.

A second overdubbed version with shorter intro was released as an instrumental track on "Celluloid Rock"volume 2. Note that 2 versions were mentioned in the 1984 session book 'Reconsider Baby' (Jorgensen etal.).

Notes:The sound quality of vocals and vocal presence on the original 2-channel LP-mixes are perhaps not as good ason most soundtracks albums, although the added distortion probably was an intentional effect that, subjectively, works well on the title track at least.

Alternate mixes from a rejected version of some of the RCA 'Speedway' album master can be found on the PairDouble Features CD 'Speedway+Clambake'.

BMG's Double Features remix from 4-track has the usual amount of digital echo.
