On behalf of the EM Support Project Team for Tsunami Reconstruction, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the invaluable donations we received for supporting affected areas in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami of March 3, 2011. EM Support Project Team for Tsunami Reconstruction organized by EM Seikatsu, Inc., United Networks for Earth Environment (U-net of Japan) and EM Research Organization, Inc. coordinated measures aiming to support volunteer activities in the damaged areas immediately after the hit of the tsunami. EM Support Project Team is providing EM materials, technical support and seeking for the best way to contribute with the affected people and local administrations. This document is an excerpt of the progress and activities updated by U-net of Japan on October, 2013.
EM Materials Applied
EM Support Project Team for Tsunami Reconstruction has received EM-related materials such as AEM•1®
(Activated EM•1®, also known as EMAS) and EM Bokashi from EM volunteers around the country.
The NPO Group U-Net has assisted in the shipment and delivery of these materials to be used at the
affected areas.

<Fukushima Prefecture>
The severe subsequent disasters caused by the earthquake and tsunami at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear
power plant lead to radioactive contamination of a large region in Eastern Japan. Residents living in the
area, 20km zone from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, were forced to move to different safe
places.
Fukushima is commonly known as the agricultural prefecture. Farmers are still fighting against the
radiation. These are their stories:
Cosmo Farm – large-scale decontamination and rice production with a large culture machine Miyakoji-machi, Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture
Well-tanned Mr. Imaizumi and Mr. Yonekura of Cosmo Farm are busy building rice paddies these days
while being actively involved in decontamination activities. They have been spraying Activated EM•1®
over the soil on regular basis, and it looks like soil is already in good condition. The east side of Miyakoji-
machi, where Mr. Imaizumi resides, is located within 20km from the nuclear plant; thus, is considered as
“cultivation-prohibited area.” Even though their rice paddies are more than 20km away from the plant,
they have to use cesium countermeasure material and chemical fertilizer for soil preparation, unlike in
other areas further away.

Furthermore, they give advice to many of evacuated farmers in decontamination using EM, as well as the
beneficial effect of EM. They are planning to invite Dr. Higa for a seminar. They also think that using EM
could be effective against “mold” problem which is a huge issue for those who live in tentative housing. Mr.
Imaizumi’s house is a log house, which perfectly suits its surroundings, and it still maintains a fresh tree
aroma and warmth even after 10 years. This could be due probably to the fact that he sprays Activated
EM•1® on and around the house, along with his farms and mountains.
The secrets of lettuce greenhouse farmers that face sales decrease.
Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture
A lot of lettuce is being cultured in the green houses of Ishii Farm. Even though the cesium check of their
lettuce is “negative,” sales have decreased to 80% even at the unattended shops after the disaster.
However, as a result of improving the soil using EM Bokashi, swine excrement and botanical material
fermented with EM, more customers started to give positive feedback complementing its tenderness,
sweetness and the lack of bitterness in the taste. They are planning to expand the greenhouse farm,
weighing much on “the cycle of local production for local consumption” for the years ahead. Their main
produce is cucumber in summer, and lettuce in winter, and the produce is always labeled with “EM
Bokashi Cultured” sticker upon shipping.
Aspiring 100% Self Production of Coarse Feed by Adding Activated EM•1

Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture
Mr. Takizawa is the 3rd generation of his family in charge of the Takizawa Dairy Farm. Located in the area
within the 30km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, this farm started to apply EM to
recover his own business after the nuclear accident.
As a pilot test he started to feed EM to the cattle that had been grazing on contaminated grass. He used EM
Bokashi (pellet form) 100 g twice a day, 500ml of Activated EM•1 per day plus 5% of EM•X GOLD. In only
two months the levels of cesium in the milk reduced from 9 Becquerel to 4.5.
Mr. Takizawa, inspired by the positive results, is now applying EM not only in the cattle feed but also it
using it to make compost fermented with EM from cow manure. He also produces his own TMR adding
Activated EM•1 into the mix of forage, grains and others.
Mr. Takizawa is now focusing on producing his own coarse feed to supply and grow his 45 cattle.
Miyagi Prefecture, where EM activities grow more active and larger by good communication between the seniors and the beginners (July 1st, 2013)
Zenjunkan no Wa Group, Miyagi meeting took place in Sendai on August 31st this year. Though planned to
be held in April 2011, it was forced to be cancelled because of the disaster. Thus, they have been
extraordinarily enthusiastic to hold this session. Mr. Suzuki, a land owner at Miyagi Prefecture showed us
around on our visit.
Ever since the disaster, more and more people in Miyagi, especially women, became highly interested in
EM due to their concerns to environment, health and food; thus, more and more “workshops” have been

held. Long-time EM users and new users positively communicate with each other, and work together to
activate, enhance, and expand EM activities. Their goal is to be an example for using EM in wild animal
conservation.
“Frontier” safe and reassuring vegetable farming NPO Natural Food and Farming MIYAGI in Sendai city – Iwakiri Wakuwaku Farm
<Miyagi Prefecture>
NPO Natural Food and Farming MIYAGI (Director: Mr. Toru Suzuki) is now expanding activities that
involves citizens and consumers that are highly interested in environment and health issues. One of the
activities is to operate a rental farm, about 1980m2 large, called
“Iwakiri Wakwaku Farm.” 4 ladies were working hard in the farm
when we visited. Even though they are new at vegetable farming,
they perform no-tilling farming under the supervision of Mr.
Suzuki, using fermented grass water made from weed and
Activated EM•1®. Furthermore, they have adopted “frontier” EM
culturing technology such as planting wheat to absorb chemical component and to retain water, as well as
placing bottled Activated EM•1® to prevent pest. Meanwhile, they are willing to expand their EM
activities that are evident to citizens and consumers, such as EM rice hydroponic farming and providing
EM farm products to local restaurants.
Organizing workshops while enjoying cooking with EM farm products Little Forest (Natural Food Club) in Sendai city
“Little Forest” gathers once or twice a month with EM farm products from their home gardens, enjoys
home cooking, and studies about EM. It was founded because Ms. Kumiko Chiba, the director, felt high-
spirited after holding a meal party using EM farm products right
after the disaster when she was feeling unbearable anxieties.
Ever since the kick-off, the members gradually increased up to 13.
Their activities are being strengthened; they invited Dr. Teruo
Higa to their apartment and held a dinner party last year, and
learned how to make EM Soup from Ms. Reiko Ito (mentioned
later) this year. They are “one of the EM activity bases in Sendai city” (Mr. Toru Suzuki).
Mothers hosting workshops for radioactivity countermeasure “Rice Ball Group” in Tomiya-machi

This group was formed in 2011 by 4 women who have children in Tomiya-machi to study radioactivity
countermeasure. When they invited Ms. Mika Noro, the director of “NPO Bridge to Tschernobyl” and
hosted a workshop in their first year, over 400 people attended from
inside and outside of Miyagi. While they practice EM Life ever since Ms.
Noro recommended EM upon the workshop, they measure the
radiation dose around their houses and continue to spray EM. Their
club has grown to a lot more than a study group. The co-directors, Ms.
Masuda, Ms. Ito and Ms. Suzuki, stated “we have learned the
importance to know and the courage to take a step with that
knowledge.”
20 years of activities, leading the EM activities in Miyagi “Friends with Nature Group” in Shibata-machi
“Friends with Nature Group” (Director: Ms. Reiko Ito) is a group with 20 years of history that could be
said to be the leading pioneer of EM activities in the prefecture.
Currently, 9 members are engaged in making EM Bokashi, purifying
rivers and 4 swimming pools in elementary schools, and selling EM
soup at the local environmental events. After the disaster, they also
took a role in training the next generations by supporting new EM
users to enhance their activities. Ms. Ito, the Director, told us about
what made them establish their organization, “I encountered EM when I became ill, and organized a
workshop just so that I get to know EM better.” Through her own activities she will attract more people
into her circle.

The attendees of the planning committee (Director: Mr. Toru Suzuki) included not only Ms. Reiko Ito who
has been an active member for a long time, but also some new organizations founded after the disaster
such as formerly mentioned “Rice Ball Club” and “EM Times” in Teraoka, Izumi-district. All of them
actively exchanged their opinions. Here, seniors and beginners work cooperatively during meeting
towards their common goal of strengthening EM activities in Miyagi, as well as becoming more and more
active. Suzuki Director also addressed “we have never been more enthusiastic before.” At the meeting,
there will be a film viewing of “Ten no Shizuku,” hosted by U-Net Miyagi.
Utilizing EM in wild animal conservation activities Mr. Osamu Takeda in Sendai City

Mr. Takeda is working as a nature conservation commissioner who is a part-time prefectural staff on wild
animal conservation activities with veterinarians.
He encountered EM in 2009 when his neighbor recommended it to him.
Because he never uses disinfectant to wild animals, he sprayed EM
fermented Rice rinse Water right away in the farm animal fence to
improve hygiene and reduce odor. Then, he found out that not only the
odor disappeared but also diseases did not spread. He sprays EM every
day ever since. Incidentally, he uses spring water to make the fermented water.
Serows are very sensitive to chemicals. When I observe them, they sometimes eat soil. “They know the
condition of the microbes in their bodies and ingest soil when they feel there are not enough. They know
how to prevent and heal diseases by themselves” (Mr. Takeda).
