PREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE - As you are all probably aware, TV1 are presenting an interactive programme called What Next? The programme continues to pose questions we as parents/caregivers to consider for our children. What new technologies, inventions/innovations and opportunities will be available for our children for the future? How are we Caring for Our Common Home, our environment? What are we doing now to prepare our children? These are questions we as a school continue to reflect on to therefore trial and change and implement new initiatives to meet the changing needs of our students learning. As we have mentioned in previous newsletters, we as a school have been working with our students to build on their skills, attitudes and knowledge to develop their growth mindset and Learner Agency. Learner Agency is all about preparing our students to make choices to prepare them for the future. It is also aligned with the Key Competencies in the NZ Curriculum; Thinking, Using Language, Symbols and Text, Manging Self and Participating and Contributing. Together as a community we will continue to work together in preparing our children for NOW and the FUTURE!

Health Update Illness - Please keep your child/ren home from school for 48 hours after the last time they have vomited or had diarrhoea.

Slapped Cheek - Slapped cheek (also known as fifth disease) is a common childhood illness. It causes bright red cheeks – like you’ve been slapped – and a lace-like rash on the body. Slapped cheek most commonly affects children under 10 years of age. Some adults may get it if they are not immune from childhood. How is slapped cheek spread? Slapped cheek is caused by the human parvovirus B19 (no connection to the animal parvovirus). Slapped cheek is passed on in droplets from the respiratory tract of an infected person, mainly by close contact, coughing and sneezing. Once infected the time until symptoms appear is between 4 and 20 days. If you catch slapped cheek, you’ll be infectious for 5 or 6 days before the first symptom appears. You’ll stop being infectious once the rash appears. Slapped cheek rapidly spreads through schools and childcare facilities and is most common during winter and spring. The Holy Ocean By Aaliyah, Rm 7

Tizz! The sound of the scorching soft sand, burning beneath my big feet. Feeling the heat rays coming from the sun, tanning my body a crispy brown like toast. I quickly top toe, running as fast as I can to the cool, splashing sea. I am healed by the holy ocean. The ocean is a tornado of emotions. It can be calm and at times dangerous. I can hear the birds chirping up above me. As I look up I can see a whole new world of wonders, the deep blue hypnotising space in the sky makes me daydream. The waves, wave goodbye as I leave them with a smile.

God Bless, Noho ora mai, Karolina Surynt-Tapiki Principal

On Tuesday Rooms 1 and 3 went to Carter Observatory. We learned that Neptune is 3 billion kms away from the sun. Mars is not orange and brown, it’s just rust. Mia and Christopher, Rm1

It was very interesting watching the movie on the roof. The screen was like an upside down bowl! The movie was about life on other planets and then we saw the constellations and the Matariki stars. Jovan, Rm2

Troy used the inflatable planets to help teach us the order of the planets. The children in our class were holding rings (and hula hoops!) to compare the sizes of the planets with each other. Grayson - R2

Troy was one of our educators at Carter Observatory. He told us the difference between stars, planets and moons. Rhylan - R2

We played a game with Troy about how far the planets are from the sun. Elora had Neptune and she was all the way out the door! Annabel - R 2

We really enjoyed the trip to Carter Observatory on the bus! Thank you to all the wonderful parents and grandparents who helped us on the day. We will remember what Kendra and Troy showed us forever! Room 2
