The Edgemead Residents’ Association (ERA) held their 39th Annual General Meeting on 18 April. Guest speakers included Ward Councillor Alderman James Vos and representatives from the City’s Disaster Risk Management team.

Alderman Vos gave a brief speech regarding matters falling under his ward, focusing mainly on the MyCiti bus route. “Current public transport is not safe and is haphazard”, says Alderman Vos.

The proposed route will link main bus routes to suburbs with the use of a ‘feeder’ bus service. Smaller buses will service suburbs with bus stops planned within a 500 meter radius of all homes.

A COMMUNITY GATHERINGby Hennie Pretorius

The City of Cape Town has drawn up a Disaster Risk Management Plan in the event of

hazardous events such as fires and floods.

Cape Town is known to have storms leading to rough seas. Rising sea levels due to global

warming and climate change is more of a concern lately.

GIRL GEEK DINNERby Monique Vellacott

Five Grade 12 CAT learners were invited and sponsored to attend the Girl Geek Dinner on Tuesday 26 March at Salt at the Ambassador Hotel in Bantry Bay.

Computer Applications Technology (CAT) is the study of the integrated components of a computer system (hardware and software) and the practical techniques for their efficient use and application to solve everyday problems.

The sponsored girls who attended included Kelly Castelin, Caitlyn

Cole, Tracey Holt, Gizelle Ricketts and Nicola Rodger. The Girl Geek Dinner promotes technology amongst females. The girls enjoyed a delicious dinner and great speakers that spoke about software development.

We would like to thank the sponsors Nu-Beginnings, Snapplify, Wings Group and Creative Brands who made this dinner possible for our girls. A special thanks to Suhaifa Naidoo who invited and co-ordinated all of this for us. If any learner or parent would like to attend the next Girl Geek Dinner or would like further information, email Suhaifa at [email protected].

Edgemead will be linked to the main bus route at Century City. Golden Arrow Bus had submitted an interdict against MyCiti. According to Alderman Vos the MyCiti feeder route will go ahead, unfortunately the battle with Golden Arrow had slowed the process down. Another exciting prospect An example of a MyCiti feeder bus stop and bus.

mentioned by Alderman Vos which will aid in transport was the implementation of cycle lanes in suburbs. Cycle lanes will aid in both safer commuting as well as a greener environment.

Disaster risk management is becoming more and more necessary worldwide. The City of Cape Town has invested a lot of time and money to ensure the safety of communities, some of which has gone into training programmes and awareness campaigns.

Representatives from the disaster risk management team of the City of Cape Town kicked off their presentation with a short movie. This was followed by an informative lecture on ways in which communities can be prepared in case of emergencies such as wildfires, floods and even radiation threats. A ‘family disaster preparedness plan’ has been compiled and made available to the public. It can be found on www.capetown.gov.za/disaster. It includes useful information such as drafting a family emergency plan, what one would need to include in a disaster supply kit, and what one would do if your family is separated during an emergency.

The new ERA committee for 2013/14

was announced at the meeting. Both Rocco du Plessis and Carl Witten were unable to continue to serve but their contribution was greatly appreciated during their time of service. Lorraine Mc Murdo, Judy Kidwell, Heather-Lee Beckley, Andre van Wilgen and Hennie Pretorius remain on the committee joined by three new members: Tony Nixon and Reece Hanning who were nominated and elected at the AGM, as well as Emile Coetzee who has subsequently been co-opted. “I AM WOMAN – LEAP OF FAITH”by Lee Engeler

Readers who missed this television programme on April 28 are sure to enjoy a brief review of the story behind the long-running ‘Adrenalynne’ advertisement in Edgemead News.

Lynne Crafford’s first child was only six months old when her husband was diagnosed with cancer. Initially it was just a mole, seemingly successfully removed, but tragically the cancer gradually spread throughout his body until his eventual death 12 years later. Lynne’s daughter speaks glowingly of how, in spite of the immense tragedy of the ‘death sentence’ hanging over them all, her mother’s faith and determination sustained a happy, positive home environment for the whole family. Her daughter Kelda was 12 and her son Charl was 9 when their father died.

Unfortunately the intense ongoing stress caused Lynne to develop the most terrible migraines and, in the hope that increased fitness would help, she started rising very early, going for a run and then doing exercises at home. Only then would she wake the family, tend to Dirk, and get the children off to school and herself to work, but the exercise definitely eased her dreadful headaches.

Two years after Dirk died, Lynne started ballroom dancing classes. She had always loved dancing, having learned ballet, tap and modern as a teenager, and it wasn’t long before

she and her dance partner won countless competitions, and they remain the ‘undisputed dance marathon champions of South Africa’. Also ‘after hours’, she qualified as a Modern and Spanish dancing teacher, a Ballroom and Latin-American dance teacher, and as an Aerobics Instructor, and then one day she followed her heart, and what she knew was God’s guidance, and started her own gym. Of course, this meant giving up her job of 23 years, her security and her comfort zone, but she felt a calling to help people on the path to good health, and her faith kept her going.

Adrenalynne has gone from strength to strength. People have joined for different reasons – to lose weight, get in shape after

a baby or after stopping smoking, to relieve stress - and many say they planned to come for only a few months but that Lynne’s lovely bubbly personality, wonderful energy, enthusiasm and charisma have motivated them to stay and stay and stay.

Lynne says it’s never too late to start, or to stop, exercising. She says that when she’s 80 she will still be teaching, still be flexible and still able to do her dancing high kicks!

Prizes were handed out to the top three in each category. Two local clubs, Cape Handlers Dog Club and the Good Hope German Shepherd Dog Club, gave brilliant displays of dog jumping and agility, obedience, tricks and protection work. The children and their families were able to enjoy hotdogs out in the sunshine whilst browsing the ‘doggy’ merchandise on offer. A large amount of pet food, towels, blankets and leads were collected which will be distributed to various local animal shelters. EPEC declared the event a great success and hopes to repeat it in the future.

Copper ColliesCopper theft in Cape

Town has become so rife that the Metal

Theft Unit now uses the services of a team of

sniffer dogs to tackle the problem. It is estimated

that 15 000 tons of copper per week is

exported from the city’s ports (but no copper is mined in the Western Cape!) and one ton is

worth around R70 000. The head of the unit said that these border collies could even detect copper

hidden underground.

Cape Garden Market Organic Gardening May/June 2013 by Renate JacobsWhat to plant:• Onions can be set out shallowly in well-prepared ground. Succession sowings of

beetroot, carrots, lettuce, radishes and turnips can be made.• Besides planting your winter and spring-flowering bulbs now (for a wonderful spring

show), sweet peas seeds can still be sown. For quick germination of sweet peas, soak the seeds in room temperature water before sowing them into a sunny area of the garden. Keep the plants moist, and add a blanket of mulch to keep the roots cool and to conserve moisture. For extra protection from the birds eating the seeds, cover the seedlings with chicken wire netting raised off the ground. Sweet peas are heavy feeders responding well to a fortnightly application of liquid fertiliser.

Bugs and Slugs: Slugs and snails are the bane of every gardener. Remember that the use of pest and herbicides kill beneficial insects, plants and micro-organisms. Use your eyes to spot the pests and your hands to remove them. Check your garden on a daily basis so that things don’t get out of control. There are countless remedies that could work to get rid of the snails and slugs organically but it requires a multi-faceted approach. Here are a few options you could try:• Companion planting of plant barriers such as: mint, chives, garlic, fennel, comfrey plants;• Sprinkle around plants eggshells, grit, sand, crushed nutshell, seashells gravel, pine

needles, oat bran, coffee grounds;• Rub Vaseline around the base of containers;• Use old copper pot scourers, cut in half and make a band around the plants.

Plant of the month: THYME Thymus vulgaris LEMON THYME Thymus citriodorusCultivation: • perennial. • Well-drained, light soil. Full sun. • Varies from upright and bushy to low-growing and spreading.Parts Used: Leaves and flowers CulinaryThyme breaks down fatty foods in the body, so include it in poultry stuffings, stir-fries, stew, casseroles, roasts and cheese dishes.Good companion with: brinjals; cabbages; green peppers; melons; squashes; tomatoes.

Watch installs new signageby Ian Cormack

The Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch (ENW) recently installed new signs at all five entrances to Edgemead. There were one or two old signs that were replaced as well. The aim of these signs is to inform everyone (including potential criminals) that there is an active neighbourhood watch in Edgemead patrolling and keeping a vigilant ‘eye’ on the suburb. The ENW plays a support role to the SAPS, reporting all suspicious people, vehicles and activities.

The project was initiated by Jade King who consulted with the authorities ensuring that the sign sizes, placement and materials complied with the law. District Watch was contacted and they kindly offered to sponsor the signs and poles. Tyrell from Grunco Group (builders) was also approached and agreed to install the five signs at the relevant sites free of charge. This is a prime example of business and residents working together to combat crime in Edgemead.

An official ‘handing over’ ceremony was conducted on Thursday 4 April at the Fairmount View Road entrance to Edgemead. Mark Horstman from District Watch and Tyrell Grundman from Grunco Group were both thanked for their support and commitment to the community, “Without this support we would not be where we are today”. Jade King was also thanked for his hard work and perseverance on this project. Unfortunately Jade is no longer a member of the committee due to other commitments. Committee members who joined the ceremony were Robert Bresler (who initially made contact with

Mother City Boosts TourismWhile visiting Lake Victoria President Jacob Zuma commented to a local how beautiful Uganda is. The local replied by saying God must have created Uganda last, using up all the left over material and ending up with a magnificent creation. President Zuma asked the local where God went once he had finished creating Uganda - the reply, “Cape Town”.

Recent statistics have revealed that by the end of 2012 South Africa’s tourism had increased by ten percent from previous years. A staggering 9,188,368 tourists were recorded to have visited South Africa last year, and many had Cape Town programmed

into their GPS.When I was living in London I used to love spending time along the Thames, especially

at night. The lights reflected off the still waters while the banks were milling with tourists. The vibe is unexplainable. Music echoed from hidden alleys, buskers roped me into their performances and the odd photographic exhibition kept me in awe for hours. London is an extremely cosmopolitan city, and there is no better place than the banks of the Thames to experience it.

Certain places in Cape Town allow me to experience much of what I experienced in London. Different cultures, various accents and the many tourist attractions all combine to bring back that feeling of excitement I felt in London. The only difference, London does not have the natural beauty Cape Town has to offer, nor the weather. Europeans are taking advantage of both the natural beauty and fantastic weather. According to statistics, Europeans are South Africa’s largest international tourist market. In the words of President Zuma, “. . . we are here at a place which is blessed”. Hennie Pretorius - Editor

Three Cheers for Kirstenbosch by Hennie PretoriusEven though Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden was established in 1913, some of the plant life was established some years before. In 1898 Cecil Rhodes planted Camphor Trees to honour Queen Victoria. He had hoped she would visit the Cape but she never did.

Kirstenbosch focuses on indigenous flora. The variety of flora found there today is a collection from far and wide. Horticulturists go out on field trips collecting plants for the garden. In the earlier years friends and colleagues were relied upon to send plants whenever they could.

Kirstenbosch became a sanctuary for endangered plants. One example of this is the Albany Cycad. It came all the way from Trappe’s Valley in Grahamstown. It is endangered, almost extinct. Kirstenbosch has given this plant a chance to survive. Seedlings have been

sold to various gardeners who can grow the plant in a protected environment. In addition to this, the Cycad has been replanted in the wild and it is protected by law. Today Kirstenbosch is home to 37 of the 40 plus Southern African cycad species.

Kirstenbosch turns 100 this year. Guided tours have been organised and various displays are on offer. Visit www.sanbi.org or contact Kirstenbosch information desk on 021 799 8783 for details.

Walking through the magnificent gardens it is obvious to see why it has been described as “one of the top botanical gardens of the world and Africa’s most beautiful garden”. Without sanctuaries like this many plant species would not survive. Three cheers for Kirstenbosch!

A row of bonsai trees line the entrance to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden - a Japanese tradition dating back to over a thousand years. The trees growth is stunted by the regular pruning of branches and roots. Photo: Hennie Pretorius

Congratulations to all our members who participated in the 2013 Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathon. We had a record number of 173 members who entered and many of them ran their first half marathon and ultra marathon in windy conditions. Well done to all and hats off for persevering!Notable performances were:Clive Owen – 2nd Grand Master in the half marathon in a

time of 1:26:36.Gary Brown – ran his 1st ultra marathon in a time of 4:25:27.Michelle Murry and Lungelo Solombela – earned their blue

numbers in the ultra marathon (10 runs).Deon Rossouw and Gary Greig – ran their 20th ultra

marathon.Pierre Binneman and Lionel Vice - earned their light blue

numbers in the half marathon.

On Workers Day, 1 May, 114 members participated in the Safari half marathon, relay and 10km events in Wellington. The weather conditions were good and a number of good times were achieved. Thanks to all, including family and friends, for supporting us on the day.

With winter heading our way we are all getting out our long sleeve tops and reflector vests and whatever else is needed to keep warm during our training runs. It is good to see that there are good turnouts at all the weekend club training sessions. Keep up the commitment!

The 2013 Cross country season also kicks off in May and members are encouraged to support the cross country events. This is also a great opportunity to get the children out of the house for some exercise. Eighteen Club Members will be travelling to Durban to partake in Comrades 2013 on Sunday, 2 June. We are looking forward to good

results from a number of members. This remains a truly magic event that mesmerizes all - runners and non-runners alike.

Our weekly time trial on Tuesdays and our Monday, Wednesday and Thursday training sessions remain popular and we have new faces joining us at every session. Thank you to Gavin and Faffa for assisting with the coaching duties and to the committee for your commitment and service!

Recently several parks in Bothasig were vandalised by hooligans who went so far as to steal the complete swings’ structures. I have now received reports that the swings in Menlo Crescent, and Donkin Way in Edgemead have also been stolen.

I must admit that I am dreadfully despondent and deeply distraught by these incidents. Ratepayers’ money contributes to the development

and maintenance of local parks and to repairs of vandalism. Criminal destruction of parks not only makes them dangerous eyesores but also reduces the amount of money available to maintain them. In my mind that constitutes theft.

Over the past few financial years more than R1 million from my ward councillor budget was spent on maintenance and development of parks in this Ward, and we must stop the individuals responsible for this destruction and punish them harshly! They should be forced to repair the damage they were responsible for and should be sentenced to lengthy community service that will include the maintenance of all our parks in the areas.

We desperately need your assistance in providing us with information which leads to the conviction of those responsible for this destructive, deplorable, and totally unnecessary damage to municipal property. Please report any incidents to the Bothasig SAPS on 021 559 9400 or contact the police vehicle doing patrols in Edgemead on 079 894 1211. You can also phone Metro Police on 021 596 1999 to report any unlawful activity or if you have any information. All reports will be treated confidentially, and even anonymous reports will be welcomed.

An Easter Affair - Edgemead High School’s Easter egg collection for Ysterplaat Junior Primary School was a huge success. The goal was to collect 2000 eggs. Edgemead High School was very fortunate and excited to deliver 2787 eggs. The ten members of the Interact Committee went along and did an Easter egg hunt for the 500 learners. The learners were very excited to meet the Easter Bunny and to get an Easter egg treat. The learners, teachers and principal were very appreciative. It was a very good experience for us all. Thank you to all who contributed to the

happiness of so many children.
