MINUTES of an ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING held on 10 OCTOBER 2018, SANDRINGHAM.

Raadslede, ere- lede en ledeDit is vir my ‘n voorreg om my Presidentsverslag vir die afgelope jaar aan u voor te hou.Ladies en GentlemenSo many of our dreams at first seem impossible , And then they seem improbable - And then when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable. When I was elected to council in 2011, a lot of things seemed impossible, but fortunately with the support of my fellow council members and dedicated staff, who summoned the will.I can proudly say that S.A Holstein are the fastest growing breeding society and still remain the leaders of genetic improvement above all breeds. And we are thankful for that. Internasionaal te kan vergelyk,en vergelyk dit ook baie akkuraat met ander Indekse soos die TRI.Ladies and GentlemenI would also like to take this opportunity to announce that my term as President of the Society has come to an end, and that I will not be available for re-elections.I would like to thank every member, council members and staff for the privilege that I had to lead this organisation and to be part of the Holstein team.My message to the Incoming council would be, to always act on behalf of the best interest of the breed, because that’s what all these legends have done for more than 100 years.Never lose your vision to keep the Holstein Society Independent for next generations to come.Because that’s what all these legends have done. Dames en Here

Hannes sê die suiwelkonferensie was verseker insiggewend gewees, geruime tyd was die raad se gesprekke oor relevansie.

The term Rainbow nation is a term coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe post-apartheid South Africa, after South Africa’s first fully democratic elections in 1994. The term is intended to encapsulate the multi-cultural and ethnic diversity of many peoples of different nations.

The country has a population of approximately 56 million people with an 11 official languages including English, Afrikaans, Zulu, and Xhosa etc.

On a recent holiday with my wife Liz to South Africa I took the opportunity to make contact with the herd book who were kind enough to organize a few Pedigree Holstein Friesian herd visits.

The number of dairy farmers in South Africa today is around 1600 which is a huge decrease since the Naughtiest. Herd size averages around 350 cows with total dairy cows at 1.6m. The natural increase in herd size has meant that there are a few very large scale units with cows in an all year round TMR system. Cows are by in large in grazing systems.

We visited the Swartland area around Malmesbury in the Western Cape where Mertilize Kreuiter, a classifier with the Association, brought us to Neels Neethlings farm.

They farm 8,000 hectare on 16 farms where they manage 10,000 dairy head including replacements. There are 3,400 registered HF cows and 600 registered Jersey cows milking is two 60 point rotary parlours and a 40 point double up fast exit herringbone parlour.

The cows were milked three times daily at 4am, 12noon and 8pm producing 130,000 litres per day. Our visit coincided with the 12noon milking and it was very interesting to see the operation at first hand. A pre and post dip routine is practiced with ladies mainly carrying out the milking routine. Interestingly no feed is available in the parlour but water is available to all cows on the rotary. There is an inline milk recording system.

The cows went back to their sheds after milking where they are fed a TMR ration and bedded on straw in a loose housing arrangement. The system of spreading the bedding manure helps to conserve moisture and improve organic matter in the soil.

Visiting the

of SOUTH AFRICAThe milk is supplied to a local processor, Clover, in the Western Cape

I met with Jurie De Kock the farm manager who explained that the milk price was very low at 5 ZA RAND per litre which is equivalent to 29c per litre. The average yield for the HF was 10,000litres and 6,000litres for the Jerseys.

Cows are fed a TMR ration mix of 13kgs of concentrate meal; 0.8Kg chopped straw, 12kg corn silage, 12kg Oat silage, 6Kgs of Citrus Pulp and 4Kgs Alfalfa. Total 48Kg/cow/day. He grows a mixture of oats and Ryegrass which is cut for silage. All feed is home grown except for the concentrate. Feed costs in the system are high around 45% of cost per litre which is counteracted by high milk output and productivity.

There is a high labour input on the farm with earnings around €300 equivalent per month which in effect is low cost. Labour cost amounted to 5%.

There are 3 farm managers reporting to the overall manager Jurie. The farm provides its own school for the children of 100 employees. They also provide housing which is admirable. This helps to motivate and retain staff.

Heifers are calved at 2YO or 2y 3months.This is achieved by special attention to the calf rearing facility and grouping cohorts so they can have social interaction. All the calves are fed individually using an automatic feeder that can be pushed along to each pen and milk replacer dispensed. Hygiene is second to none. Calves have water ad lib as well as a mixture of alfalfa and chopped straw. The shed has excellent air space and its aspect is such that there is maximum natural light in winter and Maximum shade in the summer.

The whole system runs smoothly and is very efficient.

I wish to thank Jurie, his staff and Mirtelize for giving of their time and making it a pleasant visit which was most informative.

wilderness in the Eastern Cape and a game reserve in Lalibela. Where we were up close and personal to the BIG FIVE.

In the Eastern Cape we visited Blue gums Dairy farm in Thornhill near Port Elizabeth. The brothers Brett and Grant Puttergill farm in partnership with their father Clive who is semi-retired.

They milk 400 registered Holsteins and 60 registered Jersey as well as some purebred Hereford Beef introduced in 2012. The farm runs to 600 Ha with a further 200 Ha leased. The cows are grazed all year round with the help of irrigation in the summer when temperatures can reach 30 C. A mixture of Oats and Ryegrass which is also harvested for silage as well as native KIKUYU grass is used for winter grazing with Teff introduced in the mix for summer grazing and silage. The furthest away pasture from the parlour is 4Km and it takes the cows 45min to walk that distance.

Dairying was introduced in 1954 by Clive although Tomato growing was the main enterprize. They milked 60 to 70 cows of Friesian origin. in 1993 they developed dairy farming as the main enterprise. American Holstein semen was introduced and yields increased dramatically. Bulls such as Goldwyn, Shottle, Damion, Beemer, McCutchen, Fever, Atwood etc. were used successfully in recent times. Breeding plays a big role in the success of the herd and selection is on maximizing production, health and longevity and building consistent family lines. Correct feet & legs is a big consideration as the cows have to walk long distances along with quality udders to support high production. Sexed semen is used on heifers and Genomics is used as a breeding tool to improve the top genetic lines.

The Holsteins are averaging over 10,000litres with the Jerseys doing 7,000litres. In 2016 they upgraded to a 40 point herringbone milking system and cows are milked twice daily.

The cows are topped up in the parlour according to yield and body condition. It was very interesting

to see that the cows were automatically weighed and account was taken of both yield and weight in allocating ration in the parlour. The daily average is around 30litres with 9kgs ration fed on average.

30 staff is employed. The brothers recalled the drought and fires of June 2017 where everyone in the local community were on hand helping to quench ferocious fires that left the area like a lunar landscape.

While walking through the cows it was evident that quality cows and attention to detail was a key ingredient in the success of the herd. The quality udders on the cows was a noticeable feature. The herd is classified in the top sector of all herds scored by the herd book. The brothers are strong supporters of the Association and breeding and showing is in their blood. That includes the Jerseys and the Hereford breed.

2016 was probably the most successful year ever in that they enjoyed a complete sweep at the SA Holstein Nationals in Crossways EC. in March winning Grand Champion, Production award and best udder with Puttergill Golden Sweetie 969, Reserve Grand Champion with Puttergill Fever Poppy 1207, They also won Champion young cow with Puttergill Gold Chip Jolly 12066 and Reserve champion Young cow with Puttergill Damion Iona 12077.

The Grand Champion cow Puttergill Golden Sweetie 969 was also crowned Agri Expo Livestock Dairy Queen for an unprecedented third consecutive year in Stellenbosch in October 2016 competing against all cows in Western and Eastern Cape. At present in her 7th Lactation she is still a formidable cow in her working clothes.

I wish to thank the Puttergill family for their hospitality and giving of their time to view their herd.

As volg die uitslae.

I remember a Holstein friend

It is with great sadness of heart, that I learnt of the passing of Wendy Armitage, known by her closest, as Gogo, on Saturday 17 November 2018. Aged eighty seven.

A remarkable women, which many words cannot describe with ease.

She grew up on a farm in the Amersfoort district, horses and cattle were in her blood. She married Dennis Armitage, and they had two sons, Peter and David who retain the love for farming, at Holmdene in Mpumalanga.

She became famous in her younger years for her dedication to her brood mares and the breeding of exceptional blood lines. Her show jumping and dressage was always impeccable. She had numerous Gold Cup wins at the Rand Easter show.

Wendy and her son David always had an eye for a Holstein winner. There were many hot discussion as to who the winner could be. Wendy instilled great passion into her family, and worked exceptionally hard which led to their Weyden stud excelling at many levels. Her great eye and gentle hands prepared Weyden Dynamo to be the Supreme champion at the Royal Show, in Pietermaritzburg. At the 75th Anniversary of the Holstein Society, 1987 Rand show, Weyden stud excelled with breed champion Weyden Simon 916, wasn’t Wendy so chuffed.

In 1988 Weyden won the most points at the Rand Show, with their wonderful group classes. 1996 saw the Royal show Supreme Champion with Weyden Guard 2056, 1997 the Rand Supreme champion Weyden Jess, and 1998 Rand Supreme Champion Weyden Mathie 2432. Rand Provincial Champion Weyden Inspiration 2704 was still to come.

Exceptional achievements from a great family concern. Too many to mention.

In 1999 Wendy Armitage was given Honorary Life

Membership by the Holstein Society. A wonderful tribute to a person so dedicated, and so well known within Holstein circles around the world. She had made her mark with all her great winners and with great productions from amazing cows, which earned the Donny Beal- Preston award, for production. Jon Walker, Past President, paid great tribute by saying of Wendy when he handed her Life membership ‘Integrity, competitiveness, hard work, and a passion for the Holsteins.’ That was Wendy, hugely inspirational. She taught me, and so many others, a great deal about the breed and showmanship.

May you rest in Peace, Gog, friend, and mentor of our wonderful Holstein Breed.

Ode to a Holstein Friend

Black and whites line up in splendourWhat a sight for all to see

Is that a teardrop rolling down its cheekNever Never only joy in Heaven

All are shiney all are sleek.Heads toss up the sun is rising

Snorts and tails flick, how surprisingAll are venting their excitement

Is someone going to make an announcement? Is it the Lady, could it be

She was always wonderful to me.There she is gracious and bold

Always encouraging us to win the Gold.As the grass grows and becomes lush

Life can no longer be a rush. They begin to sing great Hymns

As the joyous twilight dims Special moments, as those cattle know

A few now together with Our Lord.We shall one day, also go.

What we do

The Milagro herd was established out of the Saragossa herd in 1996 when we started to milk on the farm Milagro. Situated near Oyster Bay in the Eastern Cape, Milagro is 480ha in size and an additional 600ha which is hired and adjoins the farm. We have a milking herd of 550, of which 350 are registered Holstein and 200 are Jersey cows. In addition to this we have a beef herd of 400 registered Simmentaler and Angus cattle as well as a flock of 2000 sheep.

Cows are milked on a pasture based system twice a day, with an average of 9.5kg of concentrate being fed daily in the dairy per cow. In summer and autumn the grazing consists of irrigated kikuyu and perennial raaigras pastures and in the winter and spring ryegrass and oats pastures. Heifers are also raised on pastures and are given concentrates and hay until they are about 10 months old. From 10 months to calving their pastures are supplemented with a production lick if needed.

Most of the genetics used in the herd originate from Canada and the United states. In the selection of genetics much emphasis is placed on type. We strive to breed larger framed cows with great depth and width of body as we believe that cows need a lot of capacity to take in large amounts of pasture and then convert it to milk. We also aim to breed cows with good udders that are well attached and high and wide in the rear. In short cows that show good dairy strength are best suited to our conditions. Recent changes to our milk payment structure have forced us to place a lot more emphasis on butterfat production as currently butterfat carries a much higher payment premium than protein.

With these selection goals we have managed to be successful at shows. While we have won numerous regional and provincial show champions our National Show Champions have always been a highlight.

in the herd are: Jane, Lynette, Mandy, Sandra and more recently becoming very prominent, the Melodies.

Diversification

Financial challenges and instability in the dairy industry forced us to change our business a number of years ago. We realised that relying on the dairy industry as only source of income was putting our whole business at risk. In order to spread our risk, we developed a beef herd of registered Simmentaler and Angus cattle and started a sheep component which generates income in the form of lamb, mutton and wool.

The production of beef and lamb gave us the opportunity to buy a butcher shop in Humansdorp, which has enabled us to market our product directly to the public and in the process cut out the middle man. The butchery known as Sebastians was bought as a going concern in 2015.

Sebastians specialises in selling “grass fed”Angus beef and is only outlet in the country where Angus beef has been available on a consistent basis. The demand for our top quality Angus beef has shown tremendous growth and the challenge is to supply the ever growing demand.

2018 was the second consecutive year that Angus beef took top honours in the annual ALFA People’s choice beef challenge. The beef has been supplied by Sebastians butchery.

Recent show highlights

Our most recent success at the 2018 Holstein National Championships were Milagro Jane 12037, reserve Senior Champion cow and Milagro Ostil 16013, young cow champion and reserve grand champion.

We also enjoy showing our beef cattle and have won numerous gold cups with both our Angus and Simmentaler cattle.

The highlight of our showing career was in 2017 when we made history and won both the Dairy Queen of the Expo, with Milagro Sexie 13040 and the Beef Queen of the Expo, with our black Angus cow, Milagro Power 1324 at Agri-Expo Livestock show, Sandringham, Stellenbosch. In 2018 we

made history again, by winning the Beef Queen of the Expo with our Simmentaler cow, Milagro Amy 1471, this was the first time that a Simmentaler won this prestigious award.

In closing

Holstein cows have always paid the bills on the farm, irrespective of the various challenges faced in the dairy industry and will therefore always be an important part of the Milagro farming business. Diversifying out of the dairy industry has enabled us to withstand the pressures created by impulsive and irrational decisions of milk buyers as well as the volatility of the dairy industry as a whole. Our future is in our hands, make sure that with correct decision making and diversification you define you own destiny.
