Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

AM I DOING ENOUGH?

When confronted with the Gospel, I often wonder if I am doing enough. it's not a matter of scrupulosity or of believing that my salvation depends on my own efforts. Rather, I listen to the call of Jesus and I look, quite honestly, at the comfort in which I live, and it seems to me that being a disciple requires more than I am giving.

Surely, I think, I must go off and do something else----something grand. But then who would read the bedtime stories?

Yes, the call of Jesus is to also dig deeper and open ourselves to greater, more sacrificial love. And sometimes we're called to leave where we are to do that.

But other times, there is no need for us to go away, no need to do anything but look where we are now, hand what we find over to Jesus, and let him work with what we have, where we are right now.

Jesus, take what I have and bless it so others will be fed.

KNIGHTS NEWS

"O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me. Tell me what I should do, give me Your orders. I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me, and to accept all that You permit to happen to me. Let me only know Your will." Please say this prayer everyday for 9 days beginning August 6. Our next Council meeting and a brief Officers Installation Ceremony is Thursday, August 7, at 7:30 PM. Officers will meet Monday, August 4, at 7:00 PM. Both meetings will be at our Blissfield site. Congratulations Knights for completion of phase 1 of our door refinishing project. We dearly appreciate everyone's patience while we complete this very labor intensive project. Did you know that as a Knight your wife and children are eligible for low cost life insurance coverage? For more information about joining the Knights, please call Mark at 734 279-2269, Mel at 517 486-4022, or Bernie at 517 260-3471. Choose the candidates you are going to vote for in November now! Please vote in the August primaries so the candidates you prefer to represent you are on the November ballot.

LET’S TALK LITURGYby Margaret O’Malley

Every year on the first weekend of August there is a regional training for folks who teach religious education classes in our parishes. There are a variety of required topics that catechists must take to become fully certified. During this training many of these topics are offered in two hour sessions. For the last eight or nine years I have had the pleasure of facilitating several of these topics.

This year I will be doing two of the classes – Church and Liturgy/Worship. In the session on Church we will look at what the Church is. We will look at church as more than buildings or even a worldwide institution. The church is a community of people, called through our baptism, to publicly acknowledge that Jesus is Lord. That is a daunting task! But if we support one another as we gather each week for mass we can accomplish it!

As Fr. Jack said last week in his weekly post, we are all called to ministry by virtue of our baptism. We represent the church in all we do throughout the week. My mother used to say that we had to behave in certain ways when we were away from home because our behavior was a reflection of her and my dad and what we were learning at home. That same thing is true of the church. What we do, no matter where we are, is a reflection of our faith! We are involved in evangelization with every person we come in contact with. Hopefully we take our baptismal call seriously and represent our faith well!

Pray for all the catechists and instructors gathered this weekend. They have a big job ahead as they prepare to share their faith with the young people of our region!

QUOTE FOR THE WEEK-

“Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength.”

-St. Francis de Sales

AN APPEAL FOR THE MISSION OF THE MISSIONARIES OF ST.

FRANCIS DE SALES IN AFRICA

My name is Fr. Kurian and I am an African missionary from India . We the missionaries of St. Francis de Sales, more than 150 priests, work in 12 African nations. I will be visiting your parish the weekend of August 16/17, celebrating all masses and sharing my message.

This appeal is for the orphanage in Tabora, Tanzania to provide drinking water and education for 120 orphans.

Our main mission is evangelization. We also engage in education and social apostolate. The traditional African religious people need to hear the good news and they are ready to become Catholics. We go to the villages, establish village churches and local Christian communities. We run clinics to provide medicines and treatment. Our orphanages shelter the orphan children, schools educate them, and vocational training institutes equip them with necessary job oriented skills. Our seminaries train future priests.

We need Churches, Chapels, Schools, Dispensaries, Orphanages, Boarding Houses, a Home for the Aged, Training Centers, Social Action Centers, and Residences for missionaries. These are our urgent needs in the missions.

DID YOU KNOW???

Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation.

HERITAGE GARDEN & MEMORIAL BRICKS

We hope everyone has noticed the blossoms and greening up of our beautiful Heritage Garden. The garden club has been hard at work cleaning, trimming, laying mulch and weeding.

Later this summer we will be sending in an order for engraved bricks. Orders forms are available on our website, in the back of church or at the office.

Our order must be submitted in quantities of 14 or more and will only be submitted once a year. Don’t miss this opportunity! Bricks make a unique gift for Graduation, in memory of a loved one, or for special birthdays or anniversaries.
