HAPPENINGS Graduates and their families filled Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre in May as the Warner School celebrated the Class of 2019. Read about Warner's commencement celebration. View photos from the ceremony. The counseling and human development department held its annual symposium in May. The event celebrated graduating students’ academic and professional achievements, and included a display of posters representing capstone projects and a public expression of thanks to partnership sites and supervisors. Counseling site supervisors were recognized as Supervision Fellows and Dedicated Fellows for their continuous dedication to the training of new counselors and commitment to excellence in the provision of clinical supervision. Master’s Thesis Awards were also presented to individuals in recognition of their outstanding academic efforts and achievements. Recipients of the Master's Thesis Awards were: Oliver Boxell ‘19W (MS), Katy Calarco ‘19W (MS), Hayley Chase ‘19W (MS), Melissa Habeeb ‘19W (MS), Vicki Helfer ‘19W (MS), Katherine Lloyd ‘19W (MS), Alyssa Lombardi ‘19W (MS), Giana Porpiglia ‘19W (MS), Eric Veator ‘19W (MS), and Yueyao Wang ‘19W (MS). Nineteen counseling students were inducted into the local chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society in counseling, at an induction ceremony in May. The invited membership is based on academic excellence, professional integrity, leadership potential, and commitment to both service and advocacy within the counseling field. The guest speaker was alumnus Michael Ripple ‘18W (MS), a middle school counselor at Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District. ANNOUNCEMENTS Harnischfeger Joins Warner as Visiting Associate Professor Alice Harnischfeger '12W (PhD) joins the Warner School as a visiting associate professor in teaching and curriculum, where she will teach in and direct the disability/inclusion program. She previously served as a faculty member in a rural area college. Currently, Harnischfeger is interested in comparing place-connected and educational practice realizations from this recent contextual experience, from her multiple years of teaching in a suburban district, and from ongoing urban education explorations to further understandings of socially constructed differences and best inclusive practice. Gatto Named to Brighton Schools Alumni Hall of Fame Lynn Astarita Gatto, BHS’70, associate professor, a longtime elementary school teacher, a distinguished teacher educator, and the founding director of Horizons at Warner/University of Rochester, was inducted into the Brighton Central School District Alumni Hall of Fame in June. Finnigan Testifies to Commission on Civil Rights Kara Finnigan, professor, testified to the New York Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights at the City University of New York (CUNY) Law School in June, as part of two full-day public briefings on education funding equity, examining the extent to which New York’s education financing impermissibly discriminates against students of color. Curry Presents at Linguistics Conference Mary Jane Curry, associate professor, presented "De Facto Language of Publication Policies in Chile: Institutional Initiatives, Available Resources, and Scholars’ Responses" at the 2nd Annual Language Policy Forum (British Association of Applied Linguistics) in Edinburgh, Scotland in May. Marquis Receives APA Award for Textbook Andre Marquis, associate professor, received the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Division 56 (Trauma Psychology) award for the “Best Coverage of Child Maltreatment in Graduate Adult/General Psychopathology Textbooks” for the book Understanding Psychopathology: An Integral Exploration (Pearson, 2014), which he co- authored. This award honors individuals for providing the best, most accurate, and most balanced coverage of trauma and its link to psychopathology. Lynch Presents in the Netherlands and Russia Martin Lynch, associate professor, presented “Key Features in Doctoral Students’ Experience of Autonomy and Non-Autonomy in the University: Phenomenological Descriptions” at the 7th International Conference on Self-Determination Theory in the Netherlands in May. Lynch also presented, in Russian, “The Expression of Internal Motivation in the Psychological States of Doctoral Students” at the V International Forum on Teacher Education in Kazan, Russia in May. Shalka Publishes Two Articles Tricia Shalka, assistant professor, published the article "Mapping the Intersections of Gender and College Trauma" in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, vol. 32, issue 6. Additionally, Shalka co-published "The Chinese International Student as a (Post)Colonial Other: An Analysis of Cultural Representations in a U. S. Media Discourse" in The Review of Higher Education, vol. 42, 2019. Duckles Attends Workshop at the City University of New York Joyce Duckles, associate professor, along with community partners George Moses and Robert Moses, both of North East Area Development (NEAD), attended the Critical Participatory Action Research Workshop at the Public Science Project Institute at the City University of New York (CUNY) in May. They attended as members of Sankofa Communiversity, an intergenerational, collaborative community of research, scholarship, and social activism created in November 2018 as an outgrowth of their eight-year collaboration with the Beechwood community. Lammers and Huang Publish Article Jayne Lammers, associate professor, and Ting Huang '17W (PhD), co-authored "A Qualitative Inquiry of Video Learning by Chinese L2 Learners: Learning Internalization, Understanding Social Realities, and Reflecting on Challenges" in Chinese as a Second Language, vol. 53, issue 3. Julie Rossette ‘11W (MS), a school counselor at Edison Tech; Terry Fitch ‘18W (MS), a special education teacher at Edison Tech; and Kari McCree ‘10W (MS), a 7th & 8th grade English teacher at School No. 12, were named 2018-19 Career in Teaching (CIT) Interns of the year. They were among 11 teachers and counselors honored with an award in recognition of their exemplary performance as first-year teachers.
