Graduates and their families filled Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre in May as theWarner School celebrated the Class of 2019. Read about Warner's commencementcelebration. View photos from the ceremony.
The counseling and human development department held its annual symposium in May.The event celebrated graduating students’ academic and professional achievements,and included a display of posters representing capstone projects and a publicexpression of thanks to partnership sites and supervisors. Counseling site supervisorswere recognized as Supervision Fellows and Dedicated Fellows for their continuousdedication to the training of new counselors and commitment to excellence in theprovision of clinical supervision. Master’s Thesis Awards were also presented toindividuals in recognition of their outstanding academic efforts and achievements.Recipients of the Master's Thesis Awards were: Oliver Boxell ‘19W (MS), Katy Calarco‘19W (MS), Hayley Chase ‘19W (MS), Melissa Habeeb ‘19W (MS), Vicki Helfer ‘19W(MS), Katherine Lloyd ‘19W (MS), Alyssa Lombardi ‘19W (MS), Giana Porpiglia ‘19W(MS), Eric Veator ‘19W (MS), and Yueyao Wang ‘19W (MS). Nineteen counseling students were inducted into the local chapter of Chi Sigma Iota,the international honor society in counseling, at an induction ceremony in May. Theinvited membership is based on academic excellence, professional integrity, leadershippotential, and commitment to both service and advocacy within the counseling field. Theguest speaker was alumnus Michael Ripple ‘18W (MS), a middle school counselor atHoneoye Falls-Lima Central School District.

She previously served as afaculty member in a rural area college.Currently, Harnischfeger is interested incomparing place-connected andeducational practice realizations fromthis recent contextual experience, fromher multiple years of teaching in a suburban district, and from ongoing urban educationexplorations to further understandings of socially constructed differences and bestinclusive practice. Case Named Assistant PrincipalThe Pittsford Central School District Board of Education appointed alumna Sumara Case'03W (MS), '11W (EdD) as assistant principal at Sutherland High School. Case hadbeen serving as the assistant principal (teacher on special assignment) and accelerationcoordinator at Greece’s Odyssey Academy since 2016. Read more.
Gatto Named to Brighton Schools Alumni Hall of FameLynn Astarita Gatto, BHS’70, associate professor, a longtime elementary schoolteacher, a distinguished teacher educator, and the founding director of Horizons atWarner/University of Rochester, was inducted into the Brighton Central School DistrictAlumni Hall of Fame in June.
Finnigan Testifies to Commission on Civil Rights Kara Finnigan, professor, testified to the New York Advisory Committee of the U.S.Commission on Civil Rights at the City University of New York (CUNY) Law School inJune, as part of two full-day public briefings on education funding equity, examining theextent to which New York’s education financing impermissibly discriminates againststudents of color. Curry Presents at Linguistics ConferenceMary Jane Curry, associate professor, presented "De Facto Language of PublicationPolicies in Chile: Institutional Initiatives, Available Resources, and Scholars’ Responses"at the 2nd Annual Language Policy Forum (British Association of Applied Linguistics) inEdinburgh, Scotland in May.
Marquis Receives APA Award for TextbookAndre Marquis, associate professor, received the American Psychological Association’s(APA) Division 56 (Trauma Psychology) award for the “Best Coverage of ChildMaltreatment in Graduate Adult/General Psychopathology Textbooks” for the bookUnderstanding Psychopathology: An Integral Exploration (Pearson, 2014), which he co-authored. This award honors individuals for providing the best, most accurate, and mostbalanced coverage of trauma and its link to psychopathology.
Lynch Presents in the Netherlands and RussiaMartin Lynch, associate professor, presented “Key Features in Doctoral Students’Experience of Autonomy and Non-Autonomy in the University: PhenomenologicalDescriptions” at the 7th International Conference on Self-Determination Theory in theNetherlands in May.
Lynch also presented, in Russian, “The Expression of Internal Motivation in thePsychological States of Doctoral Students” at the V International Forum on TeacherEducation in Kazan, Russia in May.
Shalka Publishes Two ArticlesTricia Shalka, assistant professor, published the article "Mapping the Intersections ofGender and College Trauma" in the International Journal of Qualitative Studies inEducation, vol. 32, issue 6.
Additionally, Shalka co-published "The Chinese International Student as a (Post)ColonialOther: An Analysis of Cultural Representations in a U. S. Media Discourse" in TheReview of Higher Education, vol. 42, 2019.
Duckles Attends Workshop at the City University of New YorkJoyce Duckles, associate professor, along with community partners George Moses andRobert Moses, both of North East Area Development (NEAD), attended the CriticalParticipatory Action Research Workshop at the Public Science Project Institute atthe City University of New York (CUNY) in May. They attended as members of SankofaCommuniversity, an intergenerational, collaborative community of research, scholarship,and social activism created in November 2018 as an outgrowth of their eight-yearcollaboration with the Beechwood community. Rossette, Fitch, and McCree Receive RCSD Award for First YearExcellenceThree Warner graduates received the Rochester City School District’s (RCSD) award forfirst-year excellence. Julie Rossette ‘11W (MS), a school counselor at Edison Tech; TerryFitch ‘18W (MS), a special education teacher at Edison Tech; and Kari McCree ‘10W(MS), a 7th & 8th grade English teacher at School No. 12, were named 2018-19Career in Teaching (CIT) Interns of the year. They were among 11 teachers andcounselors honored with an award in recognition of their exemplary performance asfirst-year teachers.
