HAPPENINGS More than 25 members of the Warner School community presented, chaired, or served as discussants for sessions during the 2019 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Canada in April. Logan Hazen, professor, and Verna Hazen, adjunct professor, hosted their 10th annual Warner NASPA dinner for students and alumni from the higher education program in March. Attendees at the dinner included those pictured above (l-r): Malcolm McLemore ’11W (MS), doctoral student Tara Leigh Sands, Jason Smith ’08W (MS), doctoral student Monica Miranda Smalls, and Logan Hazen. Scholarship recipients from across the University of Rochester were joined by their mentors and scholarship donors for a conversation about what brought the students here and how scholarships made their education possible. ANNOUNCEMENTS Nelms Contributes Guest Essay, Will Speak at Forum on Rochester K-12 Education Shaun Nelms, superintendent of East High School, associate professor and director of the Center for Urban Education Success (CUES) at Warner, contributed a guest essay on the positive trajectory of the UR-East EPO Partnership that published by the Rochester Beacon. Additionally, Nelms will speak about the receiver schools model at the Rochester Beacon’s Solutions Forum on Rochester K-12 Education on Monday, May 13, from 4-7 p.m., with his discussion slated for 6:25 p.m. The free event will be held at The College at Brockport’s Rochester Educational Opportunity Center in downtown Rochester. Campanaro Offered Fulbright Grant Warner student Jonathan Campanaro ’18, ’19W (MS) has been offered a 2019-20 grant in the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Grant program. Campanaro, of Hershey, Pennsylvania, will serve as an English teaching assistant in Mexico. He is enrolled in the master’s program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the Warner School and majored in Spanish as an undergraduate at the University of Rochester. Project SyncOn Begins Fourth Year Warner's Center for Professional Development and Education Reform and the University of Idaho are preparing for the fourth year of a National Science Foundation (NSF)- funded research project, Synchronous Online Professional Learning Experiences for Middle Grades Mathematics Teachers in Rural Contexts (SyncOn). The purpose of the project is to develop, implement, and study an innovative online mathematics professional learning model designed to create high-impact growth opportunities for middle grades (5-8) mathematics teachers in rural districts. Learn more about SyncOn. Warner Offers New Teacher Leader Program The Warner School is now offering a Teacher Leader Certificate. The program is designed to prepare teachers to take on important leadership roles in K-12 schools through courses and related field assignments that will deepen teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge as well as understanding of adult learning and leadership. It also allows them to develop practical skills in mentoring, coaching, designing and evaluating professional development, data analysis, and leading educational change. Learn more. Finnigan Gives Keynote at Research Colloquium Kara Finnigan, professor, was the keynote speaker for the Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Education Research Colloquium in March. Her talk, "The Politics of Regional Equity: How to Mobilize Communities Toward Change" was based upon the ideas in her book, Striving in Common: A Regional Equity Framework for Urban Schools (Harvard Education Press, 2018). The colloquium also involved faculty- and student-led presentations that highlighted relevant, ongoing research activities. Learn more. Gopaul and Hocker Collaborate on Equity and Diversity Issues Bryan Gopaul, assistant professor, and Kristin Hocker '15W (EdD), assistant professor of clinical nursing at the School of Nursing, are working together to run a series of workshops on equity and inclusion for faculty, staff, and students at the Eastman School of Music. The series at Eastman is the culmination of the UR's River Campus, Med Campus, and Eastman Campus coming together on equity and diversity across campuses. Nelms to Deliver Commencement Address, Wins Two Awards Shaun Nelms, superintendent of East High School, associate professor and director of the Center for Urban Education Success (CUES) at Warner, has been selected to deliver the commencement address at SUNY Fredonia's 152nd Commencement , which will be held on May 18. Nelms graduated from Fredonia in 1999 before continuing on for his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Warner School. Read more. Additionally, Nelms won two awards at the second annual Rochester Black Men Achieve Awards Black Tie Gala. He won the 2019 Man of the Year Award, as well as the Distinguished School Leader Award. Cui Nominated for Distinguished International Student Award, Given Conference Funds for World Education Services Annual Symposium Doctoral Student Sasha Cui has been nominated for the Distinguished International Student Award by Rochester Global Connections for making exemplary contributions to enrich the Greater Rochester community culturally and furthering international understanding. Additionally, Cui was awarded conference funds to present at the 2019 World Education Services (WES) and the Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) Summer Institute in Boston, Mass. this summer. The symposium aims to address questions around the internationalization of higher education and provide a space to discuss implications for institutions worldwide. Hursh Presents at Conference, Publishes Two Articles David Hursh, professor, presented "Educating for Sustainable Societies: Examples of Social and Education Reform in Two Countries: USA and Australia," a paper written with doctoral student Zhe Chen '18W (MS) and Sarah McGinnis '18W (MS), at the Comparative and International Education Society 2019 Conference in San Francisco, Calif. in April. Additionally, Hursh published two articles in Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education, titled "Exploring Alternatives to the ‘Neoliberalism’ Critique: New Language for Contemporary Global Reform" and "Templates, Typologies, and Typifications: Neoliberalism as Keyword." Duckles Co-Publishes Book Chapter Joyce Duckles, associate professor, along with two of her community research partners, George Moses and Robert Moses, co-published the book chapter "Community-Based Participatory Research and Constructivist Grounded Theory: Aligning Transformative Research with Local Ways of Being and Knowing," in A. Bryant & K. Charmaz (Eds.) The SAGE Handbook of Current Developments in Grounded Theory (2nd ed.) (Sage, 2019). Choppin Elected Co-Chair of AERA Jeffrey Choppin, professor and chair of teaching and curriculum, was elected co-chair of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Special Interest Group, Research in Mathematics Education. He began one year as junior co-chair, effective May 1, 2019, and will then serve one year as senior co-chair, beginning May 1, 2020. Mackie Presents at Conference Karen Mackie, associate professor, presented "Helping American Working Families Cope with Adversity Through Class Aware Therapy" at the International Family Therapy Association Congress in Aberdeen, Scotland in March. Jiang Presents at Conference Doctoral student Jessie Tian Jiang presented “Applied Behavior Analysis in China: Development, Challenges, and Recommendations” at the Association of Professional Behavior Analyst annual convention in Atlanta, Ga. in April. This work is a review of the current practice of ABA in China, and an analysis of the difficulties in introducing behavioral science in Chinese culture. Lane Presents at Symposium Doctoral student Jamil Lane presented "The Effects of Dietary Intake and Body Mass Index on Cognitive Functioning Among Emerging Adults" at the 2019 New England Science Symposium at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. in April. Additionally, Lane was accepted to participate in the Harvard Medical School Postdoc Recruitment Program. The program is to recruit selected late-stage doctoral students from diverse backgrounds to travel to Harvard Medical School (HMS) for an inside scoop on postdoctoral training at HMS and to interview with potential mentors.
