EMAS Awards 2019

FOREWORD 03

Dear EMAS community,

It gives me great pleasure to present the nominees for the 2019 EMAS Awards, the most prestigious award in environmental management. From small private enterprises to large public organisations, EMAS is recognised as a driver of change. It helps organisations optimise their internal processes, achieve legal compliance, reduce environmental impacts, and use resources more efficiently. This is great news for business and the public sector as well as for the environment.

EMAS enhances the credibility, transparency and reputation of organisations. It can lead to new business opportunities, cost savings and a more motivated workforce. Annual environmental statements show the clear commitment that EMAS organisations have to environmental performance, with real data to back it up.

We stand at an environmental crossroads with a commitment to making Europe the first climate-neutral continent. The European Green Deal includes strategies designed to make Europe a global leader in the circular economy and clean technologies.

EMAS organisations are leading the way in the transition to a resource efficient and carbon-neutral economy. That is why this 12th edition of the EMAS Awards celebrates their role as a driver of change towards sustainable transition. And because EMAS organisations are required to involve their employees, this change often starts from within. When employees have a stake in the environmental management process, they are happy to make suggestions that can save resources, cut costs and increase social responsibility.

EMAS also drives external change, as the activities of the 2019 Awards winners and nominees demonstrate. Across Europe, organisations large and small are actively integrating suppliers into improvement processes and acting as sectoral multipliers of best practice. They are adding value to local communities and helping to boost biodiversity. By performing better than current legal require-ments, EMAS organisations help to set the tone for a sustainable future. I am proud to share their work with you in this brochure.

Daniel Calleja Crespo, Director-General for Environment,

European Commission

EMAS Awards: the story so far

The European Commission launched the EMAS Awards in 2005. Our aim was to highlight the excellent work in environmental protection of EMAS-registered organisations. At first annually, and since 2015 every two years, the EMAS Awards recognise outstanding achievements in particular aspects of environmental management, such as resource efficiency and waste management, or around more general themes such as ‘Effective eco-innovations supporting improvements in environmental per-formance’ and ‘Contributing to making the European economy more circular’.

The EMAS Awards ceremony plays a key role in promoting EMAS and the work of the winners and nominees. It is an opportunity for EMAS-registered organisations to share and promote their best environmental management practices. It is also a platform for dia-logue between key stakeholders. The theme for the 2019 edition of the EMAS Awards is ‘EMAS as driver of change’. It will reward the achievements of EMAS-registered organisations that implemented EMAS as a driver of change towards sustainable transition through a long-term holistic vision for a positive impact on sustainable development as a whole.

Message from the Jury Chair

Making change to create a better, greener future is a feature shared by all the nominees for the EMAS Awards 2019. They recognise that business as usual, the ‘status quo’, won’t be enough if we are to make the transition to a sustainable economy and address the significant climate and environmental challenges we face.

The public and private sector organisations that have been shortlisted in the awards have embedded sustainability into their overall strategy, using EMAS to drive change and improve performance. They also recognise that engagement, collaboration and working in partnership help them to be more successful in their sustainability ambitions and to spread the message to others.

The nominees are all leaders in their sectors; change-agents that are pioneering new ways of sustaining success through better environmental performance. The new approaches and innovations that they have adopted make them stand out from the crowd as being ‘fit for the future’. By celebrating their achievements in the EMAS Awards 2019, we hope that their approaches to sustainability will become established business practices for the majority of organisations in the years ahead.
