Greetings from the Governor of South Tyrol

I warmly welcome you in Bolzano, South Tyrol and to the 38th Annual International Association of University Libraries Conference.

We are grateful that the organizing committee has chosen Bozen-Bolzano – this is the official, bilingual name of our capital – as host of this well-known inter-national Conference. We are glad to have you here and hope you will enjoy your stay, academically as well as recreationally. Our autonomy allows us to care attentively for our countryside and mountains such as the Dolomites so they will preserve their beauty over time even though allowing development. This is because in the last 70 years the local politics was able to expand South Tyrol’s autonomy step by step, which allows us to write our own laws on many topics. If you want to know a little more about our country and its autonomy, please refer to this online booklet: provinz.bz.it/this-is-south-tyrol.Let me get back to your conference: Its title this year, Embedding Libraries – Service and Development in Context, is indicative of present and future trends of academic libraries. The days of libraries being simple storerooms for printed books and journals, with librarians mainly occupied with loaning these items to patrons are long gone. The challenges and objectives of University Libraries nowadays are multifaceted. I am convinced you will have a successful and interesting conference.I understand that you will also have the opportunity to visit some of the highlights South Tyrol has to offer. Hence I wish you many memorable impressions and experiences and hope you will come back soon for more.

Kind regards,

Arno KompatscherGovernor of South Tyrol

Greetings

Embedding Libraries – Service and Development in Context

Greetings from the Mayor

I am very glad that Bozen-Bolzano, a crossroad of cultures, a city in the middle of Europe that has always been a place of cultural exchanges, is able to host the 38th Annual Conference of the International Association of University Libraries. If the library is the mythical place par excellence that determines our careers as thinkers, then the university library is, par excellence, the place which provides resources imperative for teaching and research. In today’s society of continuous transformation, scientific libraries, which have always been known as repositories of knowledge, need to redefine their role and to orientate themselves towards the needs of their students and researchers. At the same time they need to make their supply of knowledge and their services available to its surroundings and to connect to the international community to be at the forefront of techno-logical progress.I hope that the multicultural spirit of Bozen-Bolzano and its University will provide a stimulating environment for the Conference participants and will enrich their stay in our town.

Have a great Conference!

The mayorRenzo Caramaschi

Greetings

Welcome message from the IATUL President

Dear Delegates, Colleagues and Friends,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 38th Annual IATUL Conference at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.IATUL always had and still has the aim of addressing all topics and challenges pertaining to library management and services. In the past, conference subjects have included collaboration, metrics, architecture, information literacy, leader-ship methods, e-research support, librarians’ skills, scholarly publishing, open access, and many others. Our work as librarians is multifaceted and its components are closely interrelated, their interaction and development often fascinating by themselves. Sometimes, as a librarian, one is tempted to forget about the rest of the universe. Of course, in the end, we do not. A university library, its mission and its entire infrastructure is part of the university and its mission to furthering study, education and research. Taking up “Embedding Libraries: Service and Development in Context” as the topic of the 2017 Annual IATUL Conference reflects the significance context has for our work as service providers. Furthermore, it is significant that the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano is the host of our 2017 Annual Conference, focussing on context-based collaboration. Given the multicultural and multilingual historical background of South Tyrol, Bolzano University Library is particularly well-placed to invite an international association to its premises. On behalf of the IATUL Board of Directors, I would like to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks to Gerda Winkler and her teams, all the organising committees and their members from Bolzano University Library and beyond for creating this opportunity for us. Thanks to their efforts we can be together to exchange experience and learning from each other during this week in an extraordinary atmosphere and the outstanding environment of the Italian Alps. Finally, I would also like to thank the sponsors of this conference for their generous support.

May I wish you a fruitful and rewarding time at the Conference and in Bolzano.

Reiner KallenbornIATUL President and University LibrarianTechnical University of Munich

About

About IATUL

IATUL was founded in Düsseldorf, Germany, as the International Association of Technological University Libraries in May 1955, as an international forum for the exchange of ideas relevant to librarianship in technological universities through-out the world. IATUL is a voluntary international non-governmental organisation of a group of libraries, represented by their library directors or senior managers, who have responsibility for information services and resources management. The expanded name of IATUL was changed to the International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries at the 2009 General Assembly to reflect the broader range of institutions, which now make up the membership of the association. At the 2014 Annual Conference in Helsinki, the General As-sembly of IATUL decided to extend its mandate to include all university libraries internationally, irrespective of their academic specialisation. This change reflects the membership profile of IATUL where the vast majority of institutions now be-long to comprehensive universities. Therefore, its name was changed to be the International Association of University Libraries.

IATUL is an excellent example of the development of an effective informal inter- national network between libraries of similar type, with a common high level of professional expertise and offering a similar range of services to their users. Many of the members of IATUL provide services, not only to the teaching and research staff and students of their own university, but also to industrial organi-zations and national research institutions, in their respective countries.

The main objective of IATUL is to provide a forum where library directors and senior managers can meet to exchange views on matters of current significance and to provide an opportunity for them to develop a collaborative approach to solving problems. IATUL also welcomes organizations who supply services to university libraries into membership, if they wish to be identified with the associ-ation’s activities.

About Bozen-Bolzano

With approx. 100,000 inhabitants, Bozen-Bolzano is the capital of the province of South Tyrol in Northern Italy. The rich and varied history of the city and the whole region of South Tyrol is reflected in the daily social and cultural life of its population, where Mediterranean flair mixes with alpine charm. South Tyrol’s official languages are Italian, German and Ladin and the combination of these different cultural backgrounds create a whirlwind of energetic life. Surrounded by mountains the town is a renowned tourist destination and offers a wide range of cultural, sportive and leisure activities.
