THE BALTIC BUZZ December 2017
THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT
Dear PS 133 Families:
The school year has gotten off to a great start. Thank you so much for
your support in participating in school-wide events, attending meetings,
checking homework, and making sure your child attend school prepared
every day. We do not take it for granted! Our Second Annual World
Culture Day Celebration was a success.Students represented their culture
with traditional attire and foods from their countries. The celebration of
cultures was well represented in the evening’s Potluck feast where a
variety of international foods and cultural dances
from different countries was presented in our school’s cafeteria. We
thank all the parents that participated in this event and shared their
traditions and delicious foods.

Book of the Month
December’s Book of the Month is The Boy Who Opened Our Eyes. It is a
heartwarming story that will inspire and
empower children to open their eyes to
embrace differences and understand
compassion. As a school community we will
discuss the importance of being emphatic and respectful to others
that are different. Our student leaders will take a Bully Prevention Pledge
in order to come together as a community and take a stand against
bullying.
Parent Engagement Tuesdays
Parent Engagement Tuesdays will begin on Tuesday, December 6th. They are a time to engage groups of parents in learning about the curriculum and
asking questions related to school life. It is also a time for teachers to share, and for families to find out what is going on in their child’s classroom. It’s a
time to get clarity about homework and assessments. Be sure to tell your classroom teacher, the topics that you would like to hear more about. And as a reminder, individual student conferences will not be conducted during this
time.
The Parent Survey link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CLVN2M9 on the Social
Emotional Curriculum has been emailed to you. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey so that we can compile your feedback.
Fundraising for A Good Cause
As some countries around the world were hit with devastating hurricanes, some students in 3rd and 5th grade from our PS 133 community felt the need to help raise money to help
families and children. As we enter into the holiday season, there is no better way to show that we care no matter the distance. Together, these students raised over $177.00! Amazing!
Julia Goldman (Class 3-433) “I wanted to help because lots of families lost their homes and
they are having trouble communicating with their families.”
Christopher Burwell (Class 5-509)
“I went to Puerto Rico for a family vacation. And it’s beautiful. I thought I could help to
make it beautiful again.”
Madie Cohen (Class 3-433) “I don’t have family in Puerto Rico but I have family in Mexico. I
know I wanted to help. So me and my friends decided to sell bookmarks.”
Elle Surowiecki (Class 3-433)
I want to raise money so that the cracked dam in the road can be fixed and Ms. Quintero can contact her family.”
Amalia Rollmann (Class 3-433)
“I want to help people. I heard some people are hungry and I want to help them.”
Miranda Lupel (Class 5-509)
“After everything’s that’s been going on and everything that has happened in the world, I know I wanted to help.”
At this time of year, we emphasize to our youngsters
the importance of providing a “service” to those who are less fortunate than themselves. These
opportunities come in the form of our Annual Food Drive and Toy Drive. Please support us by sending in
non-expired canned or dry goods for the Food Drive or a new unwrapped toy to donate to children at a local hospital or who live in
Temporary Homes.
We are so proud of them and thankful for what they have done! Here’s what they have to say:

PS 133 is proud to be participating in the “Just Say Hi” campaign. This partnership focuses on encouraging school communities to consider disability as
an aspect of diversity and furthering the inclusion of students with disabilities through peer conversations, relationships, and school activities. This campaign also aligns to other DOE initiatives including Equity and Excellence for All and Respect for All. We will be hosting our “kickoff” event during National Inclusive
School Week (Dec. 4th - 8th). Inclusive Schools Week is an annual event sponsored by the Inclusive Schools Network (ISN) and Stetson & Associates,
Inc., which is held each year during the first full week in December. Since its inception in 2001, Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that
schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized
due to disability, gender, socioeconomic status, cultural heritage, language preference and other factors.
