EMBRACING STDM TOOL ON LAND MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING.

MOMBASA COUNTY BRIEF.INTEREACTIONTRAINING.PROCESS.OUTPUT.LESSON LEARNT.WAYFORWARD.

Mombasa metropolitan county - 295 km²including 65 km² of inshore waters. Location - latitudes 3°56’ and 4°10’ south of the equator and longitudes 39°34’ and 39°46’east.Population - 2.6 million.65% is informal settlement.

Several meetings with Pamoja Trust.Informal settlement inventory.Introduction to data and land management tool i.e STDM.The county government analyzed its status and asked its self.

Where do we go from here?

Community leaders sensitized on the county government intentions.Six officers were trained on STDM tool.The Kwa Bulo pilot hands on training on STDM. Stakeholders sensitization done with members of the informal settlement and their leaders.Community selected members for training on data collection. This included gender, youth, marginalized groups etc.

The community and the technical team formulated data collection questionnaire.Acquisition of high resolution aerial imagery.The team was divided into four clusters and filled the questionnaire.Data collected by the community under supervision of the technical team.

1078 questionnaire and mapping has been done.Population of the settlement- 2,000 households.Process ongoing to capture the remaining 922 households.

Needs of the community identified.Community feels secure from eviction.Identify Key partners in providing secure land tenure.Able to gauge the economical status of the community.STDM tool can be used for Spatial and Social Economic Planning.

Mombasa is a large town, some, but not all land information is available in the City archives? – is it possible to scan existing information?

What is the quality of the information?How systematic is it?

Promote and Enhance STDM tool for Spatial and Social Economic Information management.Use the STDM tool for all informal settlement in the county.

The quality of land information in some areas is probably higher than in some areas
