EXPLORE THE CDThere are 4 main folders on the CD-ROM ― the catalog, design files, resizable designs, and tutorials. These folders are full of important information. Here is a list of what’s in each folder:

CATALOG

The Anita Goodesign catalog shows many of our other wonderful collections, and which techniques are used in each. From Heirloom to modern, you are sure to find something that fits your design needs!

DESIGNS

All of the designs from the collection are in this folder. Once you open the designs folder you will see folders for all the di erent machine types.

RESIZING OUR DESIGNS

All of the designs in this Anita Goodesign collection can be resized using an online software called Pulse Ambassador. The software is on the website www.pulsemicro.com. The software is not a download, but instead works online in a cloud based platform. You will need to visit the website and follow the instructions on how to operate the resizing software. You will still use the .PXF file that is included in all of our collections. The .PXF file is located in the designs folder under “pulse resizable files.” If you have an older version of ambassador installed on your computer already, it will still open and resize our older designs. However, the software is discontinued and no longer supported. We suggest visiting the website and following the tutorials for all future resizing e orts.

TUTORIALS

There are a few tutorials included on the CD-ROM. The first is a PDF copy of this booklet, which will come in handy if you lose the booklet that came with the design set. The second tutorial is a guide to choosing colors. This is a great tutorial that demonstrates how we choose colors at Anita Goodesign. You can apply our color theory to any design collection you may own. The third tutorial is a home décor tutorial.

Anita’s Wonderland | OverviewAnita’s Wonderland | Choosing Fabric & Colors

Choosing fabric for a project can be either the most fun or the most challenging part of the designs process. We have created some tips for choosing fabric and thread colors that will hopefully make this process fun and easy!

The Fabric MethodYou can use fabric to choose thread colors for your designs. Simply choose a beautiful piece of fabric then match the thread colors to the colors of the fabric. This method works great on both embroidery and quilting designs. If you think about it, this makes perfect sense. Fabric is designed by experienced color artists. So, let those experienced color artists help you. Using this method, the fabric used as part of your project or appliqué will have perfectly matched colors. For those of you who love appliqué, this technique works two-fold. By using fabric to choose your colors, the thread colors will pleasantly blend with the fabric and the design itself.

The Trim MethodHave you ever tried to buy trim to coordinate with a project after you have already embroidered it? It is almost impossible. However, if you buy the trim first, then use the trim to choose coordinating thread colors, the resulting design will match perfectly. This process works great for embroidered towels and tea towels.

The Quilting MethodAs you know, quilts have a number of dierent fabrics in them and usually follow a theme. We love fat quarter bundles and jelly roll strip packs because they give a sample of several coordinating fabrics to

choose from for your quilt. Start with a fat quarter bundle, then choose a coordinating solid fabric for the quilt backgrounds. Use fat quarter bundles to choose your thread colors by pulling thread colors that match the fabric. Use this color theme to choose the thread colors for all of the designs you are embroidering on the quilt. This way, whichever design or fabrics you choose, all of the fabrics and threads will coordinate perfectly giving you a beautiful, cohesive quilt design.

Color Story MethodChoosing fabric for one project is hard enough, but how do you choose fabrics for multiple projects that all need to coordinate? Always start with a neutral color as your base since the embroidery will stand out better on a solid fabric. Then choose 3-5 coordinating prints. Don’t be afraid of busy prints, just use those fabrics sparingly. Make sure all of your thread colors match your fabrics, but don’t pick too many dierent colors of thread or the theme will be lost. Once you have your color story, use those colors for all of your projects.

The Thread MethodFor this collection we used Mettler Silk Finish 50wt cotton thread. The great thing about this thread is that it has a natural shine, is extremely soft, and gives all your creations a fresh look. We chose to use this because cotton thread is a little bit stronger than polyester thread and softer. This makes it ideal for visible seams in your projects. The lack of stretch in cotton thread also makes it ideal for quilting projects because they won’t lose their shape. This thread is ideal for sewing cotton and especially piecing and quilting since it is high-strength and non-shrink.

To begin, hoop a piece of No-show Mesh stabilizer. Run the first step of the design, which is the squaring stitch.

Place the batting over the squaring stitches. Be sure to completely cover all sides.

The next step is the tack down stitch for the batting. Once the tack down is complete, trim away the excess batting from all sides.

With the folded fabric technique, the first piece of fabric will always be treated as an appliqué. Continue with step 3 of the design. This is the placement stitch for the first piece of fabric.

Place the appliqué fabric, making sure that it is covering the placement stitches completely, and at least ½” is extending around the edge of the block.

Trim away the excess fabric from the inside of the block only. You will want to leave the excess fabric along the edges of the block to allow for a seam allowance.

Place the folded fabric piece, right-side down, over the first piece of appliqué and extending about ¼” over the placement stitch.

Fold the fabric over, giving it a nice finger press to ensure that it is nice and smooth. You can use tape to secure the fabric. Run the next step, which is the tack down stitch for the folded fabric.

Run the next step, which is the folding stitch.

The next step will be the tack down stitch for the fabric.

Stitch the next step, which is the placement stitch for the folded fabric.

Repeat these same steps for the remaining pieces of folded fabric using the same techniques.

Once the tack down stitch is complete, trim away the excess fabric from the inside of the block only! Be sure to leave the excess fabric along the edges of the block for your seam allowance.

Once you have completed the last step, remove the project from the hoop. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, trim all sides to a ½” seam allowance.

You will start with the first two top blocks. Place them right-sides together so that the squaring stitch aligns.

Using a straight stitch, sew the two blocks together just slightly inside the squaring line. Remove the pins as you go.

Next, press, or butterfly, the seam. Open up the blocks.

To create your table runner you will need 4 quilt blocks of your choice and 4 scallop blocks. Lay them on a table to complete your arrangement. Now you are ready to stitch the blocks together.

Use pins to hold the two blocks together.

Once the top is sewn together, you will use the same process for the bottom blocks.

Continue the same process to attach the remaining top quilt blocks.

Use pins to hold the two rows together.

Once the two pieces are sewn together it will look something like this.

Sew the blocks together just slightly inside the squaring line. Remember to remove the pins as you go.

Next, take the top blocks and line them up perfectly with the bottom blocks with right-sides facing together. Use the seams to help you line the blocks up.

Anita’s Wonderland | OverviewTable Runner & Placemat | Tutorial

The next step will be to create the backing and binding for the table runner. To do so, lay your backing fabric face down, followed by the batting. Then lay your quilt blocks on top, right-side up. Use quilting safety pins to hold your layers together.

Next, using a rotary cutter and ruler, trim away the excess fabric from all sides leaving a ½” seam allowance on all sides.

Starting along the bottom, align the binding edge to the table runner edge with right-sides together. Fold the top edge of the binding down on a 45 degree angle as shown. Pin along the edge all the way around.

Now you are ready to attach your binding fabric. Cut a strip of bias binding 64” long.

Turn the blocks over and press the seams.

Using a matching thread, stitch in the ditch between each block to hold the layers together.

Once you come to the curve, make sure the edges stay aligned. You may need to clip the binding slightly to ensure that this happens. Then continue stitching using a ½” seam allowance.

Next, fold and press the binding.

Next, stitch the binding down using a 1/2” seam allowance. Remember to remove the pins as you go.

Continue all the way around the table runner. When you get to the starting point, overlap it by 2”. Trim any excess binding.

S T

Using a walking foot, along the top side, carefully top stitch along the inner edge of the binding. Remove the pins as you stitch a few inches at a time. Refer to the Fundamental Curriculum on your CD for tips on finishing a quilt, binding, and stitching in the ditch.

Flip the table runner to the back and double fold the binding over the raw edges about ⅝”. Pin the fold in place.

Place the zipper perfectly centered on those three lines. Make sure that the head of the zipper and the end are outside of the placement stitch. Use plenty of tape to hold the zipper in place. Run step 2, which is the tack down stitch for the zipper.

Remove the hoop from the machine and flip it over to the back. Place your first piece of lining fabric (8” x 8”) right-side down, lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the zipper. Use plenty of tape to secure the fabric.

On the front of your hoop, fold your outer fabric over, so that it is now right-side facing up. Use tape to hold it in place. Do not fold the lining fabric (which is on the back of the hoop) at this time.

Return the hoop to the machine and stitch the next step, which is the folding stitch.

To begin, hoop a piece of No-show Mesh stabilizer. Run the first step of the design, which is the placement stitch. There are 3 lines that mark where the zipper goes.

First we will complete the bottom of the bag. Place your first piece of outer fabric (8” x 8”) right-side down, lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the zipper.

Then, the next step will stitch the placement stitch for the appliqué fabric.

Next will be the tack down stitch for the appliqué fabric. Once that is complete, trim away the excess fabric as close to the tack down stitches as possible.

Once the embroidery is complete, remove the hoop from the machine, flip it over to the back, and fold over the lining fabric. Be sure to secure it with tape.

Continue with the embroidery steps of the design.

The next step will be the tack down stitch for the front of the bag.

Place your appliqué fabric, right-side up, making sure that it completely covers the placement stitches.

You will now complete the top of the bag. Remove the hoop from the machine. Flip the hoop over to the back and place your second piece of lining fabric (2” x 8”) right-side down, lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the zipper. Use tape to secure it place.

After the folding stitch, you will fold the lining and outer fabrics over so that they are now right-side facing up. Use tape to secure the fabric. Return the hoop to the machine and run the next step, which is the tack down stitch for both the outer and lining fabric.

Next, place the last piece of outer fabric (8” x 8”), right-side down, completely covering the entire design.

After the tack down stitch, the most important step is to open the zipper half way. Otherwise your bag will be sewn shut!

Run the next step, which will be the tack down stitch for the lining fabric.

Flip the hoop to the front. Place your second piece of outer fabric (2” x 8”) right-side down, lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the zipper. Stitch the next step which is the folding stitch for the top of the bag.

Remove the hoop from the machine. Flip the hoop over and place your final piece of lining fabric (8” x 8”) right-side down, completely covering the entire design. Tape it in place and return the hoop to the machine.

Remove the design from the hoop. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, trim the design leaving a ¼” on all sides, except where there is a gap - leave ½”.

Using a seam ripper, cut away the excess stabilizer from the zipper.

Find the gap in the lining fabric and turn the bag lining-side out. Once you have the bag right-side out, using a needle and thread, hand sew the lining fabric shut.

The next step is the tack down stitch for the last piece of outer fabric.

You will now run the final step of the design which is the tack down stitch for the final lining piece. You will notice the gap left at the bottom of the bag. This is so you will be able to turn the bag right-side out later.

Anita’s Wonderland | OverviewTEA TOWEL

No kitchen is complete without a decorative tea towel! These tea towels are perfect for sprucing up the kitchen this winter. These in the hoop projects are quick and easy to make, so your kitchen will be beautifully winterized in no time at all!

Materials• Perfect Stick stabilizer to fit hoop

• Towel: 20” x 20”

• Embroidery thread to coordinate with design

29

Anita’s Wonderland | OverviewTea Towel | Using Perfect Stick Stabilizer

With Perfect Stick tear-away stabilizer, embroidering on even the most di·cult items is achievable! Enjoy quality stitching with no residue or gummy needles. Perfect Stick is ideal for hard to hoop items such as bulky towels, backpacks, collars, napkin corners, or socks. It’s also great to use for fabrics that can be damaged by the hooping process by hoop burn, which happens with fabrics like leather, velvet, ultra-suede, and satin. With Perfect Stick you will enjoy the stability of a firm yet flexible stabilizer that will support all types of embroidering on most fabrics.

Now that you have a basic idea as to what this stabilizer can be used for, let’s talk about how to use it. Perfect Stick is essentially a “peel and stick” style stabilizer that has a smooth paper film covering the sticky surface of the stabilizer until it is ready to use. You always want to hoop the stabilizer first before removing this film.

The easiest way to remove the film is by using a straight pin or the tip of a seam ripper to score the film. It is very important to make sure you are only scoring the film, which means making a slight indentation through the film, and not cutting through the whole piece of stabilizer, as this will make it unusable. You

can either score a specific area inside the hoop and remove the film from that one spot, or draw an X as seen above from corner to corner and remove all the film. Since we are covering almost the entire hoop with the towel in this project, we went ahead and removed all of the film before we ran the placement stitch.

After you run the placement stitch, it will be time to place the towel in the hoop. The tutorial will explain how to line it up with the placement stitches. However, we wanted to note that your fabric needs to be ironed and wrinkle free. Also, make sure when you apply it to the stabilizer, that you are smoothing it out so there are no ripples.

Once you have finished running the entire design, you can pull the design from the hoop the same way you would with tear-away stabilizer. Once it is out of the hoop, remove as much excess stabilizer as you can from the back of the project. Washing it will remove any additional excess stabilizer you could not get o  of the project.

Follow the pictures in this tutorial to see how we created the rest of the project before running any of the designs.

Then, score an “X” on the surface of the paper with a straight pin or seam ripper from one corner to the other.

This stabilizer is also tear-away. So, upon completion of the project, gently pull the design away from the stabilizer.

Place one piece of Perfect Stick tear-away stabilizer in the embroidery hoop with the smooth side facing up.

Use the straight pin or seam ripper to help start peeling back the film from the sticky surface. Once you get it going, you can use your hands to remove the rest of the film from the Perfect Stick stabilizer.

Lay your towel on a flat surface, right-side up. Fold your towel in half, right-sides together, and give it a nice finger press. This will help you determine where the center of the towel is.

Open up the towel and smooth it out so that there are no wrinkles. The right-side should be facing up.

Line the folded edge of your towel up with the center line.

Stitch the first step of the design which is the placement stitch for the towel. There will be three vertical lines with one in the center. This line will help you center your towel perfectly. The top line will show you where the design will start embroidering.

You will be tacking the points of the snowflakes together using a tight zig zag stitch. If you have a button tack stitch function on your machine, you can use that with your button foot as shown above.

This is what it looks like once the two snowflakes points are attached.

Use binder clips or paper clips to attached multiple snowflakes into place. This will help you keep the snowflakes in order when attaching them.

Continue tacking the remaining inner snowflakes. When the center snowflakes are tacked in place, lay them back in place and begin connecting the outer snowflakes.

Once you have the desired number of snowflakes, arrange them to your liking. Starting with the center snowflakes, begin tacking them in place.

Using your button foot, tack stitch the snowflake points together. Use a clear, or matching thread to tack your snowflakes together. You may even try tacking on the back side of the snowflakes to hide the tacking stitches.

Gather your embroidered circle, elastic band, and band fabric. You will now begin creating the bottom part of your bowl cover.

Continue with the embroidery steps of the design.

Using your rotary cutter, trim away the excess fabric along the line that you traced.

Next, you will pin the band fabric to your embroidered circle base. Start by aligning the raw edge of the band fabric to the right side of the base circle edge.

Begin sewing 5” from the beginning edge of the band fabric, using a 5/8” seam allowance. Remember to remove the pins as you go.

Then, align the band fabric edges right-sides together and sew together using a ½” seam allowance. This will make the band one continuous piece of fabric.

Continue sewing all the way around until you reach 5” before the end.

Press the fabric to ensure that the fabric is nice and smooth.

Continue pinning all the way around leaving a 5” opening.

Next attach your elastic to a safety pin and feed through your opening.

Tack stitch the elastic ends together.

Your bowl cover is now complete and should look something like this. Enjoy!

Finish by feeding the elastic the rest of the way into the opening, and sewing the opening closed.

Do not sew all the way around. Remember to leave a 1” opening to push your elastic through.

Once you have reached the beginning, overlap the elastic edges about 1” and pin in place.
