Introduction Storage and Backup a Priority for CIOs Global trends like big data, cloud computing, mobility, and advanced security threats are challenging the relationship between IT and business, forcing a new operating model for IT. In a recent Asia Pacific CIO survey, the key priorities for any IT investment are to improve productivity, availability and recoverability, in which storage and backup infrastructure play a vital role.

A key aspect of improving data protection and storage infrastructure is to first gain a deeper understanding of the current state of the environment, in order to determine where improvements can be made. After all, if it can’t be measured, it can’t be managed.

EMC Assessments Deliver VisibilityEMC assessments for data protection and storage are important tools to deliver the infrastructure visibility needed by customers. And for partners, the assessment process is an important sales tool to obtain reliable, actionable information on your customers, and uncover their

specific needs. Our assessments help you review operational processes, procedures and competencies, as well as business and application service-level objectives.

Storage and Backup Assessments4 5Storage and Backup Assessments

Benefits for CustomersEMC assessments can quickly identify risks, resolve problems, and formulate a plan of action to optimize their infrastructure (which may involve further investment in storage and data protection solutions) to achieve their business objectives.

Benefits for PartnersThe assessment process is an important sales tool to obtain reliable, actionable information on your customers, and uncover their specific needs. Our assessments help you review operational processes, procedures and competencies, as well as business and application service-level objectives.

Assessment tools are ideal as a door-opener to many green field accounts, as well as a way to validate the benefits of EMC technologies at various points of a customer’s investment timeline. This is similar to conducting a full or partial body health check-up. It is also a great way to build a healthy sales pipeline.

Assessments are heavily used by EMC’s own direct sales force and over time, have proven to be effective in gaining the prospective customers’ trust and confidence in EMC technologies. The results of these assessments help position partners as the trusted, impartial advisor to meet their infrastructure needs, and EMC as the right technology vendor.

Why Use EMC Assessments?Customers have typically made large investments in their storage and data protection solutions. To ensure that these solutions perform optimally, customers require continuous visibility into various operating parameters, including performance, utilization levels, deduplication levels, backup times and more.

Give customers visibility into their storage and data protection assets: “What do I have?”

“How is it deployed?”

“Who is using it?”

“What specifications/configurations do they have?”

Identify issues/areas for optimization: “How over- or under-utilized is my storage capacity?”

“Am I at risk of downtime or data loss?”

“Why are backups taking so long?”

“How much backup storage can I recover with deduplication?”

“Are we able to achieve RPO/RTO SLAs?”

“Can capacity be reclaimed or repurposed?”

Plan ahead: “How fast are data volumes growing?”

“Which LOBs have the highest utilization?”

“Will my existing storage and data protection be able to keep up?”

“Am I investing too much/too little in storage or data protection?”

Key Roles to Target Include:Business Decision Makers with any of the following challenges:• Unstable and/or ineffective data protection infrastructure• Backup and recovery SLAs not being met• Uncertain storage scalability to meet high data growth,

flexibility in storage provisioning, and end-user service-level demands

• Requirement to maximize return on initial/current technology investments

Technical Decision Makers with any of the following challenges:• Need validation or justification for purchase/refresh of storage and/

or data protection infrastructure• Need to determine if configuration changes can improve storage

performance or reliability• Lack the expertise or IT resources to properly diagnose the

overall health of their storage or data protection infrastructure• Need guidance on new technology/product features currently

available that may help improve the performance and efficiency of their storage environment, as well as data protection infrastructure

• Need control and visibility over all backup and restoration processes for applications administrators in meeting end-user service-level demands

Customer Profiling Process Assessments can be performed for existing customers who need a review of their existing storage and backup environments, with recommendations for improvements on their level of efficiency and effectiveness. It can also be performed for new prospects that have competitive storage and backup solutions, but need greater visibility into their operating environments.

Your Assessment PlannerAn assessment can be typically carried out in 5 simple steps. The entire process and its key milestones are outlined below.

*Note: MiTrend assessment tools are freely available for EMC partners. Partners are free to impose service charges to your customers if necessary.

EMC encourages partners to leverage on the assessment tools in providing value-added services to their customers.

Why do I need an assessment?

This service is a comprehensive end-to-end assessment of your infrastructure that can greatly improve IT productivity and TCO while maximizing the value and ROI of EMC technologies. It provides peace of mind that your environment aligns with your business objectives and best practices. Moreover, the recommendations from this service may result in significant cost savings.

What value does the assessment give me?

Experience has shown that most customers need periodic assessments of their storage and data protection environments, particularly when the size and complexity of the environment changes (data growth and deployment of new technologies by technology vendors). Purchasing the service ensures that your environment is optimized. It is a non-disruptive service that can verify the efficiency of storage and backup infrastructures.

Typical Customer Questions

Is there any commitment required after the assessment to purchase an EMC solution?

The objective of this assessment is to discover any potential vulnerabilities in your backup infrastructure and processes. At the end of the assessment, you can, at no obligation, seek verification with your existing backup vendors or address any shortcomings with our recommended solutions.

Will the assessment be disruptive to my operations?

Depending on the types of data protection assessments, you may or may not be required to install light-weight agents on your customers’ backup infrastructure. The agents or application software act as data collation points for all your backup processes.

The duration of assessments will vary, depending on the assessment requirements, from hours to weeks.

The assessments will not impede the performance of your network, backup operations or the workload of your servers or backup appliances.

Storage and Backup Assessments10 11Storage and Backup Assessments

Review Customer InfrastructureBefore the data collection can take place, partners will need to meet with key technical customer personnel to understand any issues with the current storage and backup infrastructure and how it is being utilized. One-to-one customer interviews will allow you to get a complete understanding of the storage and data protection challenges facing the business.

This phase is also useful for communicating all pre-requisites prior to onsite activities. This may include setting up a data collection server onsite, as well as installation of data collection agents in production servers.

DiscoveryThis phase will require partners to execute specific EMC data collection tools and review existing documentation. This phase also includes creation and review of various documents that will be later used during the actual analysis and recommendations for the project.

There are various data collection tools available depending on the assessments. These tools may be used as stand-alone, mix-and-match, or in conjunction with custom scripts and data analysis methods.

EMC Data Protection Advisor (DPA)

Customer sites may already include a licensed, installed DPA instance that is already collecting data. This will be a good source of backup and storage reports.

Tool Description

EMC Assessment Workbench

This collection of utilities and scripted tools can be downloaded from MiTrend (https://emc.mitrend.com) and used to collect data on customers’ current file systems and backup application environment(s). The collected data can then be uploaded back to MiTrend for analysis. A report with in-depth analysis will be generated and should be used to discuss recommendations with the customers.

Data Domain Configuration Guide Generator

This tool helps export Data Domain configurations and settings into a single document that can be used for analysis.

AnalysisThe Analysis phase consists of reviewing all available customer data collected during the Discovery phase. This section will include verification of data collected to ensure accuracy and relevance for analysis.

At this stage, collected data can be uploaded to MiTrend (https://emc.mitrend.com) in order to generate a customized report that will be presented to the customer.

Partners that require assistance in interpreting the report can reach out to their local EMC Partner Sales Manager for help. Alternatively, EMC Global Services can provide Cooperative Health Checks where partners simply gather the data and submit it to EMC for customized reports.

Deliver Report and PresentationThe executive and technical reports are the most important and comprehensive deliverables

in the assessment exercise. They provide details on all findings, recommendations and solution design updates or changes.

The reports provides the most significant value to customers by giving them a health check report on their existing storage and backup infrastructure. It will also assist executive and technical staff in understanding the technology gaps in meeting their business and IT goals.

Templates of these reports can be obtained from your EMC Partner Sales Manager.

Propose SolutionPartners should now be able to develop and provide a Statement of Work detailing the level of effort for remediation and/or optimization of the storage and backup infrastructure. Depending on the findings, partners should take this opportunity to suggest a potential refresh of the existing infrastructure or a competitor (non-EMC) take-out initiative.

How Does It Work?

Backup Assessments Success Story: AlstomAlstom is a global leader in power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure. The company built the fastest train and the highest capacity, automated metro in the world. It also provides turnkey integrated power plant solutions and associated services for a wide variety of energy sources, including hydro, nuclear, gas, coal and wind, and offers a wide range of solutions for power transmission, with a focus on smart grids.

Business ChallengesThe company’s IT budget was not keeping pace with growth. With a lack of mature capacity planning and management resources and informal communications between functional areas, it was facing difficulties stabilizing their existing backup environment.

The company needed to better understand their backup environment, so as to identify tactical and strategic improvement opportunities.

EMC SolutionEMC provided an assessment of Alstom’s IT Shared Service Center backup infrastructure (located in Switzerland).

The assessment included the following areas:• Existing EMC NetWorker backup of

file systems, applications and NDMP• Data Domain systems• HP Data Protector Backup

The EMC team was able to perform a NAS and storage device utilization impact analysis, conduct a backup operational and organizational review, and conduct staff interviews to understand the cross-functional impacts on the backup infrastructure.

Business ResultsBecause of the assessments, the company was able to:• Stabilize its current NetWorker and

Data Domain environments• Upgrade its backup network

infrastructure to improve performance• Upgrade and expand the NetWorker

and Data Domain footprint• Implement DPA for improved backup

monitoring and reporting• Displace HP Data Protector for its

Oracle backups• Implement an archive strategy• Improve operational documentation

and staffing skills• Grow the deal size for upsell

opportunities (hardware, software and services)

Unified Storage Assessments Success Story: Regional TelcoThis global telecommunications company has over 12.8 million customers in 30 markets across Central America, Asia Pacific and the Caribbean.

Business ChallengesThe customer was experiencing serious performance issues on its NetApp FAS6020 and carried out backup through Symantec NetBackup to tape. Key business applications were a mix of block and file, and included Oracle, Exchange and SQL Server. There was contention between the block and file protocols, which created very slow response times for users and missed SLAs. As a temporary fix, they moved all of their CIFS File Shares and applications on NFS File to Block Fibre Channel.

EMC SolutionEMC leveraged the MiTrend Workload Profile Assessment (WPA) to gather data about the NetApp filer and its activities. The WPA showed that the customer was buying a large number of disks to try to solve their performance problems, resulting in workload skew. Looking at the back-end IOPS, the assessment showed that 74 percent of I/Os were being processed by only 26 percent of their disks. The filers occupied 57 rack units, with utilization of around 46 percent on 241 disks. The assessment also showed that the customer was paying double for power and cooling compared to what they would pay with EMC.

At this point, the EMC account team began to discuss the value of Flash and FAST to increase utilization and improve performance. Instead of solving performance problems by adding more 15K drives, the customer would be able to leverage Flash and FAST in VNX to achieve much higher performance and utilization.

EMC Team Extends the Conversation Around BackupThe EMC team also leveraged a Backup Assessment, which showed that it was taking up to 48 hours for the customer

to complete backups, with 1 host alone taking 38 percent of the time. Large full backups, some over 2TB in size, were a great fit for deduplication. Metrics such as these helped the EMC team confidently position Data Domain.

Business ResultsThe EMC team displaced 61TB of NetApp (the whole environment) and replaced it with a Unified VNX5500 with the Total Protection Pack for point-in-time recovery and the FAST Suite to automatically address workload skew with FAST policies, previously a tedious manual task of trying to balance capacity, performance and response.

The EMC solution provided a 46 percent increase in performance and sixfold increase in capacity, achieved with 10 fewer disks. The extra performance and capacity allowed a footprint for growth to be leveraged for data warehousing and big data applications. EMC also addressed problems with the large 48-hour backup window by replacing the backup-to-tape function with a Data Domain DD670. Additional credit was allocated to training and services to further enhance the customer experience.
